| 1 | Ὑπολαβὼν δὲ Σωφαρ ὁ Μιναῖος λέγει |
Then Sophar the Minaean answered and said, | Zophar. Jb.11.1-20 | Then Zophar the Na'amathite answered: | וַיַּעַן צֹפַר הַנַּעֲמָתִי וַיֹּאמַר׃ | 1 |
| 2 | Ὁ τὰ πολλὰ λέγων καὶ ἀντακούσεται· ἢ καὶ ὁ εὔλαλος οἴεται εἶναι δίκαιος; εὐλογημένος γεννητὸς γυναικὸς ὀλιγόβιος. |
He that speaks much, should also hear on the other side: or does the fluent speaker think himself to be righteous? blessed [is] the short lived offspring of woman. | "Should a multitude of words go unanswered, and a man full of talk be vindicated? | הֲרֹב דְּבָרִים לֹא יֵעָנֶה וְאִם־אִישׁ שְׂפָתַיִם יִצְדָּק׃ | 2 | |
| 3 | μὴ πολὺς ἐν ῥήμασιν γίνου, οὐ γάρ ἐστιν ὁ ἀντικρινόμενός σοι. |
Be not a speaker of many words; for is there none to answer you? | Should your babble silence men, and when you mock, shall no one shame you? | בַּדֶּיךָ מְתִים יַחֲרִישׁו וַתִּלְעַג וְאֵין מַכְלִם׃ | 3 | |
| 4 | μὴ γὰρ λέγε ὅτι Καθαρός εἰμι τοῖς ἔργοις καὶ ἄμεμπτος ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ. |
For say not, I am pure in my works, and blameless before him. | For you say, 'My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in God's eyes.' | וַתֹּאמֶר זַךְ לִקְחִי וּבַר הָיִיתִי בְעֵינֶיךָ׃ | 4 | |
| 5 | ἀλλὰ πῶς ἂν ὁ κύριος λαλήσαι πρὸς σέ; καὶ ἀνοίξει χείλη αὐτοῦ μετὰ σοῦ. |
But oh that the Lord would speak to you, and open his lips to you! | But oh, that God would speak, and open his lips to you, | וְאוּלָם מִי־יִתֵּן אֱלֹוהַּ דַּבֵּר וְיִפְתַּח שְׂפָתָיו עִמָּךְ׃ | 5 | |
| 6 | εἶτα ἀναγγελεῖ σοι δύναμιν σοφίας, ὅτι διπλοῦς ἔσται τῶν κατὰ σέ· καὶ τότε γνώσῃ ὅτι ἄξιά σοι ἀπέβη ἀπὸ κυρίου ὧν ἡμάρτηκας. |
Then shall he declare to you the power of wisdom; for it shall be double of that which is with you: and then shall you know, that a just recompense of your sins has come to you from the Lord. | and that he would tell you the secrets of wisdom! For he is manifold in understanding. Know then that God exacts of you less than your guilt deserves. | וְיַגֶּד־לְכָ תַּעֲלֻמֹות חָכְמָה כִּי־כִפְלַיִם לְתוּשִׁיָּה וְדַע כִּי־יַשֶּׁה לְךָ אֱלֹוהַ מֵעֲוֹנֶךָ׃ |

| 7 | ἦ ἴχνος κυρίου εὑρήσεις ἢ εἰς τὰ ἔσχατα ἀφίκου, ἃ ἐποίησεν ὁ παντοκράτωρ; |
Will you find out the traces of the Lord? or have you come to the end [of that] which the Almighty has made? | "Can you find out the deep things of God? Can you find out the limit of the Almighty? | הַחֵקֶר אֱלֹוהַ תִּמְצָא אִם עַד־תַּכְלִית שַׁדַּי תִּמְצָא׃ | 7 | |
| 8 | ὑψηλὸς ὁ οὐρανός, καὶ τί ποιήσεις; βαθύτερα δὲ τῶν ἐν ᾅδου τί οἶδας; |
Heaven [is] high; and what will you do? and there are deeper things than those in hell; what do you know? | It is higher than heaven - what can you do? Deeper than Sheol - what can you know? | גָּבְהֵי שָׁמַיִם מַה־תִּפְעָל עֲמֻקָּה מִשְּׁאֹול מַה־תֵּדָע׃ | 8 | |
| 9 | ἢ μακρότερα μέτρου γῆς ἢ εὔρους θαλάσσης; |
Or longer than the measure of the earth, or the breadth of the sea. | Its measure is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea. | אֲרֻכָּה מֵאֶרֶץ מִדָּהּ וּרְחָבָה מִנִּי־יָם׃ | 9 | |
| 10 | ἐὰν δὲ καταστρέψῃ τὰ πάντα, τίς ἐρεῖ αὐτῷ Τί ἐποίησας; |
And if he should overthrow all things, who will say to him, What have you done? | If he passes through, and imprisons, and calls to judgment, who can hinder him? | אִם־יַחֲלֹף וְיַסְגִּיר וְיַקְהִיל וּמִי יְשִׁיבֶנּוּ׃ | 10 | |
| 11 | αὐτὸς γὰρ οἶδεν ἔργα ἀνόμων, ἰδὼν δὲ ἄτοπα οὐ παρόψεται. |
For he knows the works of transgressors; and when he sees wickedness, he will not overlook [it]. | For he knows worthless men; when he sees iniquity, will he not consider it? | כִּי־הוּא יָדַע מְתֵי־שָׁוְא וַיַּרְא־אָוֶן וְלֹא יִתְבֹּוןָן׃ | 11 | |
| 12 | ἄνθρωπος δὲ ἄλλως νήχεται λόγοις, βροτὸς δὲ γεννητὸς γυναικὸς ἴσα ὄνῳ ἐρημίτῃ. |
But man vainly buoys himself up with words; and a mortal born of woman [is] like an ass in the desert. | But a stupid man will get understanding, when a wild ass's colt is born a man. | וְאִישׁ נָבוּב יִלָּבֵב וְעַיִר פֶּרֶא אָדָם יִוָּלֵד׃ | 12 | |
| 13 | εἰ γὰρ σὺ καθαρὰν ἔθου τὴν καρδίαν σου, ὑπτιάζεις δὲ χεῖρας πρὸς αὐτόν, |
For if you have made your heart pure, and lifts up [thine] hands towards him; | "If you set your heart aright, you will stretch out your hands toward him. | אִם־אַתָּה הֲכִינֹותָ לִבֶּךָ וּפָרַשְׂתָּ אֵלָיו כַּפֶּךָ׃ | 13 | |
| 14 | εἰ ἄνομόν τί ἐστιν ἐν χερσίν σου, πόρρω ποίησον αὐτὸ ἀπὸ σοῦ, ἀδικία δὲ ἐν διαίτῃ σου μὴ αὐλισθήτω. |
if there is any iniquity in your hands, put if far from you, and let not unrighteousness lodge in your habitation. | If iniquity is in your hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in your tents. | אִם־אָוֶן בְּיָדְךָ הַרְחִיקֵהוּ וְאַל־תַּשְׁכֵּן בְּאֹהָלֶיךָ עַוְלָה׃ | 14 | |
| 15 | οὕτως γὰρ ἀναλάμψει σου τὸ πρόσωπον ὥσπερ ὕδωρ καθαρόν, ἐκδύσῃ δὲ ῥύπον καὶ οὐ μὴ φοβηθῇς· |
For thus shall your countenance shine again, as pure water; and you shall divest yourself of uncleanness, and shall not fear. | Surely then you will lift up your face without blemish; you will be secure, and will not fear. | כִּי־אָז תִּשָּׂא פָנֶיךָ מִמּוּם וְהָיִיתָ מֻצָק וְלֹא תִירָא׃ | 15 | |
| 16 | καὶ τὸν κόπον ἐπιλήσῃ ὥσπερ κῦμα παρελθὸν καὶ οὐ πτοηθήσῃ· |
And you shall forget trouble, as a wave that has passed by; and you shall not be scared. | You will forget your misery; you will remember it as waters that have passed away. | כִּי־אַתָּה עָמָל תִּשְׁכָּח כְּמַיִם עָבְרוּ תִזְכֹּר׃ | 16 | |
| 17 | ἡ δὲ εὐχή σου ὥσπερ ἑωσφόρος, ἐκ δὲ μεσημβρίας ἀνατελεῖ σοι ζωή· |
And your prayer [shall be] as the morning star, and life shall arise to you [as] from the noonday. | And your life will be brighter than the noonday; its darkness will be like the morning. | וּמִצָּהֳרַיִם יָקוּם חָלֶד תָּעֻפָה כַּבֹּקֶר תִּהְיֶה׃ | 17 | |
| 18 | πεποιθώς τε ἔσῃ ὅτι ἔστιν σοι ἐλπίς, ἐκ δὲ μερίμνης καὶ φροντίδος ἀναφανεῖταί σοι εἰρήνη. |
And you shall be confident, because you have hope; and peace shall dawn to you from out of anxiety and care. | And you will have confidence, because there is hope; you will be protected and take your rest in safety. | וּבָטַחְתָּ כִּי־יֵשׁ תִּקְוָה וְחָפַרְתָּ לָבֶטַח תִּשְׁכָּב׃ | 18 | |
| 19 | ἡσυχάσεις γάρ, καὶ οὐκ ἔσται ὁ πολεμῶν σε· μεταβαλόμενοι δὲ πολλοί σου δεηθήσονται. |
For you shall be at ease, and there shall be no one to fight against you; and many shall charge, and make supplication to you. | You will lie down, and none will make you afraid; many will entreat your favor. | וְרָבַצְתָּ וְאֵין מַחֲרִיד וְחִלּוּ פָנֶיךָ רַבִּים׃ | 19 | |
| 20 | σωτηρία δὲ αὐτοὺς ἀπολείψει· ἡ γὰρ ἐλπὶς αὐτῶν ἀπώλεια, ὀφθαλμοὶ δὲ ἀσεβῶν τακήσονται. |
But safety shall fail them; for their hope is destruction, and the eyes of the ungodly shall waste away. | But the eyes of the wicked will fail; all way of escape will be lost to them, and their hope is to breathe their last." | וְעֵינֵי רְשָׁעִים תִּכְלֶינָה וּמָנֹוס אָבַד מִנְהֶם וְתִקְוָתָם מַפַּח־נָפֶשׁ׃ ף |
