Forsothe whanne myche tyme was passid after that the Lord had youe pees to Israel, for alle naciouns in cumpas weren suget; and whanne Josue was thanne of long lijf, and of ful eld age, Josue clepide al Israel, |
And when a long time was passed, after that the Lord had given peace to Israel, all the nations round about being subdued, and Josue being now old, and far advanced in years: | Joshua's farewell address. Jos.23.1-24.28 |
| 2 | vocavit Josue omnem Israëlem, majoresque natu, et principes ac duces, et magistros, dixitque ad eos: Ego senui, et progressioris ætatis sum: |
and the grettere men in birthe, and the princes, and dukis, and maistris, and seide to hem, Y wexide elde, and Y am of grettere age; |
Josue called for all Israel, and for the elders, and for the princes, and for the judges, and for the masters, and said to them: I am old, and far advanced in years: | |
| 3 | vosque cernitis omnia, quæ fecerit Dominus Deus vester cunctis per circuitum nationibus, quomodo pro vobis ipse pugnaverit: |
and ye seen alle thingis whiche youre Lord God hath do to alle naciouns bi cumpas, hou he fauyt for you. |
And you see all that the Lord your God hath done to all the nations round about, how he himself hath fought for you: | |
| 4 | et nunc quia vobis sorte divisit omnem terram, ab orientali parte Jordanis usque ad mare magnum, multæque adhuc supersunt nationes: |
And now for he departide to you bi lot al the lond, fro the eest part of Jordan til to the grete see, and many naciouns ben left yit, |
And now since he hath divided to you by lot all the land, from the east of the Jordan unto the great sea, and many nations yet remain: | |
| 5 | Dominus Deus vester disperdet eas et auferet a facie vestra, et possidebitis terram, sicut vobis pollicitus est. |
youre Lord God schal distrie hem, and schal take awei fro youre face; and ye schulen welde the lond, as he bihiyte to you. |
The Lord your God will destroy them, and take them away from before your face, and you shall possess the land as he hath promised you. | |
| 6 | Tantum confortamini, et estote solliciti, ut custodiatis cuncta quæ scripta sunt in volumine legis Moysi: et non declinetis ab eis neque ad dexteram neque ad sinistram: |
Oneli be ye coumfortid, and be ye bisy, that ye kepe alle thingis that ben writun in the book of Moises lawe, and bowe not awei fro tho, nether to the riyt side nether to the left side, |
Only take courage, and be careful to observe all things that are written in the book of the law of Moses: and turn not aside from them neither to the right hand nor to the left: | |
| 7 | ne postquam intraveritis ad gentes quæ inter vos futuræ sunt, juretis in nomine deorum earum, et serviatis eis, et adoretis illos: |
lest aftir that ye han entrid to the hethene men, that schulen be among you, ye swere in the name of the goddis of hem, and ye serue tho goddis, and worschipe hem. |
Lest after that you are come in among the Gentiles, who will remain among you, you should swear by the name of their gods, and serve them, and adore them: | |
| 8 | sed adhæreatis Domino Deo vestro: quod fecistis usque in diem hanc. |
But cleue ye to youre Lord God, which thing ye han do til in to this dai; |
But cleave ye unto the Lord your God: as you have done until this day. | |
| 9 | Et tunc auferet Dominus Deus in conspectu vestro gentes magnas et robustissimas, et nullus vobis resistere poterit. |
and thanne the Lord God schal do awei in youre siyt grete folkis, and strongeste; and noon schal mow ayenstonde you. |
And then the Lord God will take away before your eyes nations that are great and very strong, and no man shall be able to resist you. | |
| 10 | Unus e vobis persequetur hostium mille viros: quia Dominus Deus vester pro vobis ipse pugnabit, sicut pollicitus est. |
Oon of you schal pursue a thousynde men of enemyes, for youre Lord God schal fiyte for you, as he bihiyte. |
One of you shall chase a thousand men of the enemies: because the Lord your God himself will fight for you, as he hath promised. | |
| 11 | Hoc tantum diligentissime præcavete: ut diligatis Dominum Deum vestrum. |
Be ye war bifore moost diligentli of this thing oneli, that ye loue youre Lord God. |
11This only take care of with all diligence, that you love the Lord your God. | |
| 12 | Quod si volueritis gentium harum, quæ inter vos habitant, erroribus adhærere, et cum eis miscere connubia, atque amicitias copulare: |
That if ye wolen cleue to the errouris of these folkis that dwellen among you, and wolen medle mariagis with hem, and couple frenschipis, |
But if you will embrace the errors of these nations that dwell among you, and make marriages with them, and join friendships: | |
| 13 | jam nunc scitote quod Dominus Deus vester non eas deleat ante faciem vestram, sed sint vobis in foveam ac laqueum, et offendiculum ex latere vestro, et sudes in oculis vestris, donec vos auferat atque disperdat de terra hac optima, quamtradidit vobis. |
wite ye riyt now, that youre Lord God schal not do awei hem bifor youre face, but thei schulen be to you in to a dich, and a snare, and in to hirtyng of youre side, and in to stakis in youre iyen, til youre Lord God take awei you, and distrie fro this beste loond, which he yaf to you. |
Know ye for a certainty that the Lord your God will not destroy them be- fore your face, but they shall be a pit and a snare in your way, and a stumblingblock at your side, and stakes in your eyes, till he take you away and destroy you from off this excellent land, which he hath given you. | |
| 14 | En ego hodie ingredior viam universæ terræ, et toto animo cognoscetis quod de omnibus verbis, quæ se Dominus præstiturum vobis esse pollicitus est, unum non præterierit incassum. |
Lo! Y entre to dai in to the weye of al erthe; and ye schulen knowe with al soule, that of al wordis whiche the Lord bihiyte hym silf to yyue to you, not oon passide in veyn. |
Behold this day I am going into the way of all the earth, and you shall know with all your mind that of all the words which the Lord promised to perform for you, not one hath failed. | |
| 15 | Sicut ergo implevit opere quod promisit, et prospera cuncta venerunt: sic adducet super vos quidquid malorum comminatus est, donec vos auferat atque disperdat de terra hac optima, quam tradidit vobis, |
Therfor as he fillide in werk that, that he bihiyte, and alle thingis bifelden bi prosperite, so he schal brynge on you whateuer thing of yuelis he manaasside, til he take awei you, and distrie fro this beste lond, which he yaf to you. |
Therefore as he hath fulfilled in deed, what he promised, and all things prosperous have come: so Will he bring upon you all the evils he hath threatened, till he take you away and destroy you from off this excellent land, which he hath given you, | |
| 16 | eo quod præterieritis pactum Domini Dei vestri, quod pepigit vobiscum, et servieritis diis alienis, ad adoraveritis eos: cito atque velociter consurget in vos furor Domini, et auferemini ab hac terra optima, quam tradidit vobis. |
For ye braken the couenaunt of youre Lord God, which he made with you, and serueden alien goddis, and worschipeden hem, sone and swiftli the strong veniaunce of the Lord schal rise on to you; and ye schulen be takun awei fro this beste lond, which he yaf to you. |
When you shall have transgressed the covenant of the Lord your God, which he hath made with you, and shall have served strange gods, and adored them : then shall the indignation of the Lord rise up quickly and speedily against you, and you shall be taken away from this excellent land, which he hath delivered to you. | |
| 1 | Congregavitque Josue omnes tribus Israël in Sichem, et vocavit majores natu, ac principes, et judices, et magistros: steteruntque in conspectu Domini, |
And Josue gaderide alle the lynagis of Israel in to Sechem; and he clepide the grettere men in birthe, and the princes, and iugis, and maistris; and thei stoden in the siyt of the Lord. |
And Josue gathered together all the tribes of Israel in Sichem, and called for the ancients, and the princes, and the judges, and the masters: and they stood in the sight of the Lord: | |
| 2 | et ad populum sic locutus est: Hæc dicit Dominus Deus Israël: Trans fluvium habitaverunt patres vestri ab initio, Thare pater Abraham et Nachor: servieruntque diis alienis. |
And he spak thus to the puple, The Lord God of Israel seith these thingis, Youre fadris dwelliden at the bigynnyng biyende the flood Eufrates, Thare, the fadir of Abraham, and Nachor, and thei serueden alien goddis. |
And he spoke thus to the people: Thus saith the Lord the God of Israel: Your fathers dwelt of old on the other side of the river, Thare the father of Abraham, and Nachor: and they served strange gods. | |
| 3 | Tuli ergo patrem vestrum Abraham de Mesopotamiæ finibus, et adduxi eum in terram Chanaan, multiplicavique semen ejus, |
Therfor Y took youre fadir Abraham fro the coostis of Mesopotanye, and Y brouyte hym in to the lond of Canaan; and Y multipliede the seed of hym, |
And I took your father Abraham from the borders of Mesopotamia: and brought him into the land of Chanaan: and I multiplied his seed, | |
| 4 | et dedi ei Isaac: illique rursum dedi Jacob et Esau. E quibus, Esau dedi montem Seir ad possidendum: Jacob vero et filii ejus descenderunt in Ægyptum. |
and Y yaf Isaac to hym; and eft Y yaf to Isaac, Jacob, and Esau, of whiche Y yaf to Esau the hil of Seir, to haue in possessioun; forsothe Jacob and hise sones yeden doun in to Egipt. |
And gave him Isaac: and to him again I gave Jacob and Esau. And I gave to Esau mount Seir for his possession: but Jacob and his children went down into Egypt. | |
| 5 | Misique Moysen et Aaron, et percussi Ægyptum multis signis atque portentis. |
And Y sente Moises and Aaron, and Y smoot Egipt with many signes and wondris, |
And I sent Moses and Aaron, and I struck Egypt with many signs and wonders. | |
| 6 | Eduxique vos et patres vestros de Ægypto, et venistis ad mare: persecutique sunt Ægyptii patres vestros cum curribus et equitatu, usque ad mare Rubrum. |
and Y ledde you and youre fadris out of Egipt. And ye camen to the see, and Egipcians pursueden youre fadris with charis, and multitude of knyytis, til to the Reed See. |
And I brought you and your fathers out of Egypt, and you came to the sea: and the Egyptians pursued your fathers with chariots and horsemen, as far as the Red Sea. | |
| 7 | Clamaverunt autem ad Dominum filii Israël: qui posuit tenebras inter vos et Ægyptios, et adduxit super eos mare, et operuit eos. Viderunt oculi vestri cuncta quæ in Ægypto fecerim, et habitastis in solitudine multo tempore: |
Forsothe the sones of Israel crieden to the Lord, and he settide derknessis bitwixe you and Egipcians; and he brouyte the see on hem, and hilide hem. Youre iyen sien alle thingis, whiche Y dide in Egipt. And ye dwelliden in wildirnesse in myche tyme. |
And the children of Israel cried to the Lord: and he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them, and covered them. Your eyes saw all that I did in Egypt, and you dwelt in the wilderness a long time: | |
| 8 | et introduxi vos in terram Amorrhæi, qui habitabat trans Jordanem. Cumque pugnarent contra vos, tradidi eos in manus vestras, et possedistis terram eorum, atque interfecistis eos. |
And Y brouyte you in to the lond of Ammorrei, that dwellide biyende Jordan; and whanne thei fouyten ayens you, Y bitook hem in to youre hondis, and ye hadden in possessioun the lond of hem, and ye killiden hem. |
And I brought you into the land of the Amorrhite, who dwelt beyond the Jordan. And when they fought against you, I delivered them into your hands, and you possessed their land, and slew them. | |
| 9 | Surrexit autem Balac filius Sephor rex Moab, et pugnavit contra Israëlem. Misitque et vocavit Balaam filium Beor, ut malediceret vobis: |
Sotheli Balach, the sone of Sephor, the king of Moab, roos, and fauyt ayens Israel; and he sente, and clepide Balaam, the sone of Beor, that he schulde curse you. |
And Balac son of Sephor king of Moab arose and fought against Israel. And he sent and called for Balaam son of Beor, to curse you: | |
| 10 | et ego nolui audire eum, sed e contrario per illum benedixi vobis, et liberavi vos de manu ejus. |
And Y nolde here hym, but ayenward bi hym Y blesside you, and delyuerede you fro hise hondis. |
And I would not hear him, but on the contrary I blessed you by him, and I delivered you out of his hand. | |
| 11 | Transistisque Jordanem, et venistis ad Jericho. Pugnaveruntque contra vos viri civitatis ejus, Amorrhæus et Pherezæus, et Chananæus, et Hethæus, et Gergezæus, et Hevæus, et Jebusæus: et tradidi illos in manus vestras. |
And ye passiden Jordan, and camen to Jerico; and men of that citee fouyten ayens you, Ammorrei, and Feresei, and Cananei, Ethei, and Gergesei, and Euei, and Jebusei; and Y bitook hem in to youre hondis. |
And you passed over the Jordan, and you came to Jericho. And the men of that city fought against you, the Amorrhite, and the Pherezite, and the Chanaanite, and the Hethite, and the Gergesite, and the Hevite, and the Jebusite: and I delivered them into your hands. | |
| 12 | Misique ante vos crabrones: et ejeci eos de locis suis, duos reges Amorrhæorum, non in gladio nec in arcu tuo. |
And Y sente flies with venemouse tongis bifor you, and Y castide hem out of her places; Y kyllide twei kyngis of Ammorreis, not in thi swerd and bowe. |
And I sent before you hornets: and I drove them out from their places, the two kings of the Amorrhites, not with thy sword nor with thy bow. | |
| 13 | Dedique vobis terram, in qua non laborastis, et urbes quas non ædificastis, ut habitaretis in eis: vineas, et oliveta, quæ non plantastis. |
And Y yaf to you the lond in which ye traueiliden not, and citees whiche ye bildiden not, that ye schulden dwelle in tho, and vyneris, and places of olyue trees, whiche ye plauntiden not. |
And I gave you a land, in which you had not laboured, and cities to dwell in which you built not, vineyards and oliveyards, which you planted not. | |
| 14 | Nunc ergo timete Dominum, et servite ei perfecto corde atque verissimo: et auferte deos quibus servierunt patres vestri in Mesopotamia et in Ægypto, ac servite Domino. |
Now therfor drede ye the Lord, and serue ye hym with perfite herte and moost trewe; and do ye awei the goddis, to whiche youre fadris seruyden in Mesopotanye, and in Egipt; and serue ye the Lord. |
Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him with a perfect and most sincere heart: and put away the gods which your fathers served in Mesopotamia and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. | |
| 15 | Sin autem malum vobis videtur ut Domino serviatis, optio vobis datur: eligite hodie quod placet, cui servire potissimum debeatis: utrum diis, quibus servierunt patres vestri in Mesopotamia, an diis Amorrhæorum, in quorum terra habitatis: egoautem et domus mea serviemusDomino. |
But if it semeth yuel to you, that ye serue the Lord, chesyng is youun to you; chese ye to you to dai that, that plesith, whom ye owen most to serue; whether to goddis, whiche youre fadris serueden in Mesopotanye, whether to the goddis of Ammorreis, in whose lond ye dwellen; forsothe Y, and myn hows schulen serue the Lord. |
But if it seem evil to you to serve the Lord, you have your choice: choose this day that which pleaseth you, whom you would rather serve, whether the gods which your fathers served in Mesopotamia, or the gods of the Amorrhites, in whose land you dwell: but as for me and my house we will serve the Lord. | |
| 16 | Responditque populus, et ait: Absit a nobis ut relinquamus Dominum, et serviamus diis alienis. |
And al the puple answeride and seide, Fer be it fro vs that we forsake the Lord, and serue alien goddis. |
And the people answered, and said: God forbid we should leave the Lord, and serve strange gods. | |
| 17 | Dominus Deus noster, ipse eduxit nos et patres nostros de terra Ægypti, de domo servitutis: fecitque videntibus nobis signa ingentia, et custodivit nos in omni via per quam ambulavimus, et in cunctis populis per quos transivimus. |
Oure Lord God hym silf ledde vs and oure fadris out of the lond of Egipt, fro the hows of seruage, and dide grete signes in oure siyt; and he kepte vs in al the weie, bi which we yeden, and in alle puplis, bi whiche we passiden; and he castide out alle folkis, |
The Lord our God he brought us and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage: and did very great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way by which we journeyed, and among all the people through whom we passed. | |
| 18 | Et ejecit universas gentes, Amorrhæum habitatorem terræ quam nos intravimus. Serviemus igitur Domino, quia ipse est Deus noster. |
Ammorrei, the dwellere of the lond, in to which we entriden. Therfor we schulen serue the Lord, for he is oure Lord God. |
And he hath cast out all the nations, the Amorrhite the inhabitant of the land into which we are come. Therefore we will serve the Lord, for he is our God. | |
| 19 | Dixitque Josue ad populum: Non poteritis servire Domino: Deus enim sanctus et fortis æmulator est, nec ignoscet sceleribus vestris atque peccatis. |
And Josue seide to the puple, Ye moun not serue the Lord; for God is hooli, and a strong feruent louyere, and he foryyueth not youre trespassis and synnes. |
And Josue said to the people: You will not be able to serve the Lord: for he is a holy God, and mighty and jealous, and will not forgive your wickedness and sins. | |
| 20 | Si dimiseritis Dominum, et servieritis diis alienis, convertet se, et affliget vos atque subvertet, postquam vobis præstiterit bona. |
If ye forsaken the Lord, and seruen alien goddis, the Lord schal turne hym silf, and schal turment you, and schal distrie, after that he hath youe goodis to you. |
If you leave the Lord, and serve strange gods, he will turn, and will afflict you, and will destroy you after all the good he hath done you. | |
| 21 | Dixitque populus ad Josue: Nequaquam ita ut loqueris erit, sed Domino serviemus. |
And the puple seide to Josue, It schal not be so, as thou spekist, but we schulen serue the Lord. |
And the people said to Josue: No, it shall not be so as thou sayest, but we will serve the Lord. | |
| 22 | Et Josue ad populum: Testes, inquit, vos estis, quia ipsi elegeritis vobis Dominum ut serviatis ei. Responderuntque: Testes. |
And Josue seide to the puple, Ye ben witnessis, that ye han chose the Lord to you, that ye serue him. And thei answeriden, We ben witnessis. |
And Josue said to the people: You are witnesses, that you yourselves have chosen you the Lord to serve him. And they answered: We are witnesses. | |
| 23 | Nunc ergo, ait, auferte deos alienos de medio vestri, et inclinate corda vestra ad Dominum Deum Israël. |
Therfor, he seide, Now do ye awei alien goddis fro the myddis of you, and bowe ye youre hertis to the Lord God of Israel. |
Now therefore, said he, put away strange gods from among you, and incline your hearts to the Lord the God of Israel. | |
| 24 | Dixitque populus ad Josue: Domino Deo nostro serviemus, et obedientes erimus præceptis ejus. |
And the puple seide to Josue, We schulen serue oure Lord God, and we schulen be obedient to hise heestis. |
And the people said to Josue: We will serve the Lord our God, and we will be obedient to his commandments. | |
| 25 | Percussit ergo Josue in die illo fœdus, et proposuit populo præcepta atque judicia in Sichem. |
Therfor Josue smoot a boond of pees in that dai, and settide forth to the puple comaundementis and domes in Sichen. |
Josue therefore on that day made a covenant, and set before the people commandments and judgments in Sichem. | |
| 26 | Scripsit quoque omnia verba hæc in volumine legis Domini: et tulit lapidem pergrandem, posuitque eum subter quercum, quæ erat in sanctuario Domini: |
And he wroot alle these wordis in the book of Goddis lawe. And he took a greet stoon, and puttide it vndur an ook, that was in the seyntuarie of the Lord. |
And he wrote all these things in the volume of the law of the Lord: and he took a great stone, and set it under the oak that was in the sanctuary of the Lord. | |
| 27 | et dixit ad omnem populum: En lapis iste erit vobis in testimonium, quod audierit omnia verba Domini, quæ locutus est vobis: ne forte postea negare velitis, et mentiri Domino Deo vestro. |
And he seide to al the puple, Lo! this stoon schal be to you in to witnessing, that ye herden alle the wordis of the Lord, whiche he spak to you, lest perauenture ye wolden denye aftirward, and lye to youre Lord God. |
And he said to all the people: Behold this stone shall be a testimony unto you, that it hath heard all the words of the Lord, which he hath spoken to you: lest perhaps hereafter you will deny it, and lie to the Lord your God. | |
| 28 | Dimisitque populum, singulos in possessionem suam. |
And he lefte the puple, ech man in to his possessioun. |
And he sent the people away every one to their own possession. | |
