The apostles now rejoined Jesus and reported to him all that they had done and taught. | The Feeding of the Five Thousand Mk.6.30-44 (Bethsaida) | Mt.14.13-21 | Lk.9.10-17 | Jn.6.1-14 | Καὶ συνάγονται οἱ ἀπόστολοι πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν, καὶ ἀπήγγειλαν αὐτῷ πάντα ὁσα ἐποίησαν καὶ ὁσα ἐδίδαξαν.
He said to them, 'Come with me, by yourselves, to some lonely place where you can rest quietly.' (For they had no leisure even to eat, so many were coming and going.)
Accordingly, they set off privately by boat for a lonely place.
But many saw them leave and recognized them, and came round by land, hurrying from all the towns towards the place, and arrived there first.
When he came ashore, he saw a great crowd; and his heart went out to them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he had much to teach them.
As the day wore on, his disciples approached him and said, 'This is a lonely place and it is getting very late; | | Καὶ ἠδη ὡρας πολλῆς γενομένης προσελθόντες αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἐλεγον ὅτι Ἔρημός ἐστιν ὁ τόπος, καὶ ἠδη ὡρα πολλή·
send the people off to the farms and villages round about, to buy themselves something to eat.'
'Give them something to eat yourselves', he answered. | | ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Δότε αὐτοῖς ὑμεῖς φαγεῖν. καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ, Ἀπελθόντες ἀγοράσωμεν δηναρίων διακοσίων ἀρτους καὶ δώσομεν αὐτοῖς φαγεῖν;
They replied, 'Are we to go and spend twenty pounds Literally: 200 denarii. on bread to give them a meal?' 'How many loaves have you?' he asked; 'go and see.' They found out and told him, 'Five, and two fishes also.'
He ordered them to make the people sit down in groups on the green grass, | | καὶ ἐπέταξεν αὐτοῖς ἀνακλῖναι πάντας συμπόσια συμπόσια ἐπὶ τῷ χλωρῷ χόρτῳ.
and they sat down in rows, a hundred rows of fifty each.
Then, taking the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples to distribute.
He also divided the two fishes among them.
They all ate to their hearts' content; and twelve great basketfuls of scraps were picked up, with what was left of the fish.
| 44 | Those who ate the loaves numbered five thousand men.
