4 New English Bible (New Testament) Passage New Testament in Greek (UBS.Ed.26)

4 1JESUS WAS THEN led away by the Spirit into the wilderness, to be tempted by the devil. The Temptation of Jesus Mt.4.1-11 (Wilderness of Judaea) | Mk.1.12-13 | Lk.4.1-13Τότε ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀνήχθη εἰς τὴν ἐρημον ὑπὸ τοῦ πνεύματος, πειρασθῆναι ὑπὸ τοῦ διαβόλου.
2For forty days and nights he fasted, and at the end of them he was famished.
3The tempter approached him and said, 'If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.'
4Jesus answered, 'Scripture says, "Man cannot live on bread alone; he lives on every word that God utters." '- Man shall not live by bread alone Mt.4.4 | Dt.8.3ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν, Γέγραπται,

5The devil then took him to the Holy City and set him on the parapet of the temple.
6'If you are the Son of God,' he said, 'throw yourself down; for Scripture says, "He will put his angels in charge of you and they will support you in their arms, for fear you should strike your foot against a stone." '- He will give his angels charge of you Mt.4.6 | Ps.91.11-12καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ, Εἰ υἱὸς εἶ τοῦ θεοῦ, βάλε σεαυτὸν κάτω· γέγραπται γὰρ ὅτι

7Jesus answered him, 'Scripture says again you are not to put the Lord your God to the test." '
- You shall not tempt the Lord your God Mt.4.7 | Dt.6.16ἐφη αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Πάλιν γέγραπται, Οὐκ ἐκπειράσεις κύριον τὸν θεόν σου.
8Once again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in their glory.
9'All these', he said, 'I will give you, if you will only fall down and do me homage.'
10But Jesus said, 'Begone, Satan! Scripture says, "You shall do homage to the Lord your God and worship him alone." '- You shall worship the Lord your God Mt.4.10 | Dt.6.13τότε λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς, ὑπαγε, Σατανᾶ· γέγραπται γάρ,

11Then the devil left him, and angels appeared and waited on him.
