| 5 | 'A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some seed fell along the footpath, where it was trampled on, and the birds ate it up. | Ἐξῆλθεν ὁ σπείρων τοῦ σπεῖραι τὸν σπόρον αὐτοῦ. καὶ ἐν τῷ σπείρειν αὐτὸν ὃ μὲν ἐπεσεν παρὰ τὴν ὁδόν, καὶ κατεπατήθη, καὶ τὰ πετεινὰ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ κατέφαγεν αὐτό. | ||
| 6 | Some seed fell on rock and, after coming up, withered for lack of moisture. | καὶ ἑτερον κατέπεσεν ἐπὶ τὴν πέτραν, καὶ φυὲν ἐξηράνθη διὰ τὸ μὴ ἐχειν ἰκμάδα. | ||
| 7 | Some seed fell in among thistles, and the thistles grew up with it and choked it. | καὶ ἑτερον ἐπεσεν ἐν μέσῳ τῶν ἀκανθῶν, καὶ συμφυεῖσαι αἱ ἀκανθαι ἀπέπνιξαν αὐτό. | ||

| 12 | Those along the footpath are the men who hear it, and then the devil comes and carries off the word from their hearts for fear they should believe and be saved. | οἱ δὲ παρὰ τὴν ὁδόν εἰσιν οἱ ἀκούσαντες, εἶτα ἐρχεται ὁ διάβολος καὶ αἰρει τὸν λόγον ἀπὸ τῆς καρδίας αὐτῶν, ἵνα μὴ πιστεύσαντες σωθῶσιν. | ||
| 13 | The seed sown on rock stands for those who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but have no root; they are believers for a while, but in the time of testing they desert. | οἱ δὲ ἐπὶ τῆς πέτρας οἳ ὁταν ἀκούσωσιν μετὰ χαρᾶς δέχονται τὸν λόγον, καὶ οὗτοι ῥίζαν οὐκ ἐχουσιν, οἳ πρὸς καιρὸν πιστεύουσιν καὶ ἐν καιρῷ πειρασμοῦ ἀφίστανται. | ||
| 14 | That which fell among thistles represents those who hear, but their further growth is choked by cares and wealth and the pleasures of life, and they bring nothing to maturity. | τὸ δὲ εἰς τὰς ἀκάνθας πεσόν, οὗτοί εἰσιν οἱ ἀκούσαντες, καὶ ὑπὸ μεριμνῶν καὶ πλούτου καὶ ἡδονῶν τοῦ βίου πορευόμενοι συμπνίγονται καὶ οὐ τελεσφοροῦσιν. | ||
| 15 | But the seed in good soil represents those who bring a good and honest heart to the hearing of the word, hold it fast, and by their perseverance yield a harvest. | τὸ δὲ ἐν τῇ καλῇ γῇ, οὗτοί εἰσιν οἱτινες ἐν καρδίᾳ καλῇ καὶ ἀγαθῇ ἀκούσαντες τὸν λόγον κατέχουσιν καὶ καρποφοροῦσιν ἐν ὑπομονῇ. | ||
| 16 | 'Nobody lights a lamp and then covers it with a basin or puts it under the bed. On the contrary, he puts it on a lamp-stand so that those who come in may see the light. | Οὐδεὶς δὲ λύχνον ἀψας καλύπτει αὐτὸν σκεύει ἢ ὑποκάτω κλίνης τίθησιν, ἀλλ' ἐπὶ λυχνίας τίθησιν, ἵνα οἱ εἰσπορευόμενοι βλέπωσιν τὸ φῶς. | ||
| 17 | For there is nothing hidden that will not become public, nothing under cover that will not be made known and brought into the open. | οὐ γάρ ἐστιν κρυπτὸν ὃ οὐ φανερὸν γενήσεται, οὐδὲ ἀπόκρυφον ὃ οὐ μὴ γνωσθῇ καὶ εἰς φανερὸν ἐλθῃ. | ||
| 18 | 'Take care, then, how you listen; for the man who has will be given more, and the man who has not will forfeit even what he thinks he has.' | βλέπετε οὖν πῶς ἀκούετε· ὃς ἂν γὰρ ἐχῃ, δοθήσεται αὐτῷ, καὶ ὃς ἂν μὴ ἐχῃ, καὶ ὃ δοκεῖ ἐχειν ἀρθήσεται ἀπ' αὐτοῦ. | ||

| 21 | He replied, 'My mother and my brothers—they are those who hear the word of God and act upon it.' | ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς, Μήτηρ μου καὶ ἀδελφοί μου οὗτοί εἰσιν οἱ τὸν λόγον τοῦ θεοῦ ἀκούοντες καὶ ποιοῦντες. | ||

| 23 | So they put out; and as they sailed along he went to sleep. Then a heavy squall struck the lake; they began to ship water and were in grave danger. | πλεόντων δὲ αὐτῶν ἀφύπνωσεν. καὶ κατέβη λαῖλαψ ἀνέμου εἰς τὴν λίμνην, καὶ συνεπληροῦντο καὶ ἐκινδύνευον. | ||
| 24 | They went to him, and roused him, crying, 'Master, Master, we are sinking!' He awoke, and rebuked the wind and the turbulent waters. The storm subsided and all was calm. | προσελθόντες δὲ διήγειραν αὐτὸν λέγοντες, Ἐπιστάτα ἐπιστάτα, ἀπολλύμεθα. ὁ δὲ διεγερθεὶς ἐπετίμησεν τῷ ἀνέμῳ καὶ τῷ κλύδωνι τοῦ ὑδατος· καὶ ἐπαύσαντο, καὶ ἐγένετο γαλή νη. | ||
| 25 | 'Where is your faith?' he asked. In fear and astonishment they said to one another, 'Who can this be? He gives his orders to wind and waves, and they obey him.' | εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς, Ποῦ ἡ πίστις ὑμῶν; φοβηθέντες δὲ ἐθαύμασαν, λέγοντες πρὸς ἀλλήλους, Τίς ἀρα οὗτός ἐστιν ὅτι καὶ τοῖς ἀνέμοις ἐπιτάσσει καὶ τῷ ὑδατι, καὶ ὑπακούου σιν αὐτῷ; | ||

| 27 | As he stepped ashore he was met by a man from the town who was possessed by devils. For a long time he had neither worn clothes nor lived in a house, but stayed among the tombs. | ἐξελθόντι δὲ αὐτῷ ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν ὑπήντησεν ἀνήρ τις ἐκ τῆς πόλεως ἐχων δαιμόνια· καὶ χρόνῳ ἱκανῷ οὐκ ἐνεδύσατο ἱμάτιον, καὶ ἐν οἰκίᾳ οὐκ ἐμενεν ἀλλ' ἐν τοῖς μνήμασιν. | ||
| 28 | When he saw Jesus he cried out, and fell at his feet shouting, 'What do you want with me, Jesus, son of the Most High God? I implore you, do not torment me.' | ἰδὼν δὲ τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἀνακράξας προσέπεσεν αὐτῷ καὶ φωνῇ μεγάλῃ εἶπεν, Τί ἐμοὶ καὶ σοί, Ἰησοῦ υἱὲ τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ὑψίστοὺ δέομαί σου, μή με βασανίσῃς. | ||
| 29 | For Jesus was already ordering the unclean spirit to come out of the man. Many a time it had seized him, and then, for safety's sake, they would secure him with chains and fetters; but each time he broke loose, and with the devil in charge made off to the solitary places. | παρήγγειλεν γὰρ τῷ πνεύματι τῷ ἀκαθάρτῳ ἐξελθεῖν ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου. πολλοῖς γὰρ χρόνοις συνηρπάκει αὐτόν, καὶ ἐδεσμεύετο ἀλύσεσιν καὶ πέδαις φυλασσόμενος, καὶ διαρρήσσων τ ὰ δεσμὰ ἠλαύνετο ὑπὸ τοῦ δαιμονίου εἰς τἀς ἐρήμους. | ||
| 30 | Jesus asked him, 'What is your name?' 'Legion', he replied. This was because so many devils had taken possession of him. | ἐπηρώτησεν δὲ αὐτὸν ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Τί σοι ὀνομά ἐστιν; ὁ δὲ εἶπεν, Λεγιών, ὅτι εἰσῆλθεν δαιμόνια πολλὰ εἰς αὐτόν. | ||
| 31 | And they begged him not to banish them to the Abyss. | καὶ παρεκάλουν αὐτὸν ἵνα μὴ ἐπιτάξῃ αὐτοῖς εἰς τὴν ἀβυσσον ἀπελθεῖν. | ||
| 32 | There happened to be a large herd of pigs nearby, feeding on the hill; and the spirits begged him to let them go into these pigs. | Ἦν δὲ ἐκεῖ ἀγέλη χοίρων ἱκανῶν βοσκομένη ἐν τῷ ὀρει· καὶ παρεκάλεσαν αὐτὸν ἵνα ἐπιτρέψῃ αὐτοῖς εἰς ἐκείνους εἰσελθεῖν· καὶ ἐπέτρεψεν αὐτοῖς. | ||
| 33 | He gave them leave; the devils came out of the man and went into the pigs, and the herd rushed over the edge into the lake and were drowned. | ἐξελθόντα δὲ τὰ δαιμόνια ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου εἰσῆλθον εἰς τοὺς χοίρους, καὶ ὡρμησεν ἡ ἀγέλη κατὰ τοῦ κρημνοῦ εἰς τὴν λίμνην καὶ ἀπεπνίγη. | ||
| 34 | The men in charge of them saw what had happened, and, taking to their heels, they carried the news to the town and country-side; | ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ βόσκοντες τὸ γεγονὸς ἐφυγον καὶ ἀπήγγειλαν εἰς τὴν πόλιν καὶ εἰς τοὺς ἀγρούς. | ||
| 35 | and the people came out to see for themselves. When they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the devils had gone out sitting at his feet clothed and in his right mind, they were afraid. | ἐξῆλθον δὲ ἰδεῖν τὸ γεγονὸς καὶ ἦλθον πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν, καὶ εὗρον καθήμενον τὸν ἄνθρωπον ἀφ' οὗ τὰ δαιμόνια ἐξῆλθεν ἱματισμένον καὶ σωφρονοῦντα παρὰ τοὺς πόδας τοῦ Ἰησοῦ, καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν. | ||
| 36 | The spectators told them how the madman had been cured. | ἀπήγγειλαν δὲ αὐτοῖς οἱ ἰδόντες πῶς ἐσώθη ὁ δαιμονισθείς. | ||
| 37 | Then the whole population of the Gergesene district asked him to go, for they were in the grip of a great fear. So he got into the boat and returned. | καὶ ἠρώτησεν αὐτὸν ἀπαν τὸ πλῆθος τῆς περιχώρου τῶν Γερασηνῶν ἀπελθεῖν ἀπ' αὐτῶν, ὅτι φόβῳ μεγάλῳ συνείχοντο· αὐτὸς δὲ ἐμβὰς εἰς πλοῖον ὑπέστρεψεν. | ||
| 38 | The man from whom the devils had gone out begged leave to go with him; but Jesus sent him away: | ἐδεῖτο δὲ αὐτοῦ ὁ ἀνὴρ ἀφ' οὗ ἐξεληλύθει τὰ δαιμόνια εἶναι σὺν αὐτῷ· ἀπέλυσεν δὲ αὐτὸν λέγων, | ||
| 39 | 'Go back home,' he said, 'and tell them everything that God has done for you.' The man went all over the town spreading the news of what Jesus had done for him. | Ἡπόστρεφε εἰς τὸν οἶκόν σου, καὶ διηγοῦ ὁσα σοι ἐποίησεν ὁ θεός. καὶ ἀπῆλθεν καθ' ὁλην τὴν πόλιν κηρύσσων ὁσα ἐποίησεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς. | ||

| 41 | Then a man appeared—Jairus was his name and he was president of the synagogue. Throwing himself down at Jesus's feet he begged him to come to his house, | καὶ ἰδοὺ ἦλθεν ἀνὴρ ᾧ ὀνομα Ἰάϊρος, καὶ οὗτος ἀρχων τῆς συναγωγῆς ὑπῆρχεν, καὶ πεσὼν παρὰ τοὺς πόδας Ἰησοῦ παρεκάλει αὐτὸν εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ, | ||
| 42 | because he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, who was dying. And while Jesus was on his way he could hardly breathe for the crowds. | ὁτι θυγάτηρ μονογενὴς ἦν αὐτῷ ὡς ἐτῶν δώδεκα καὶ αὐτὴ ἀπέθνῃσκεν. Ἐν δὲ τῷ ὑπάγειν αὐτὸν οἱ ὀχλοι συνέπνιγον αὐτόν. | ||
| 43 | Among them was a woman who had suffered from haemorrhages for twelve years; and nobody had been able to cure her. | καὶ γυνὴ οὖσα ἐν ῥύσει αἱματος ἀπὸ ἐτῶν δώδεκα, ἡτις οὐκ ἰσχυσεν ἀπ' οὐδενὸς θεραπευθῆναι, | ||
| 44 | She came up from behind and touched the edge of his cloak, and at once her haemorrhage stopped. | προσελθοῦσα ὀπισθεν ἡψατο τοῦ κρασπέδου τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ, καὶ παραχρῆμα ἐστη ἡ ῥύσις τοῦ αἱματος αὐτῆς. | ||
| 45 | Jesus said, 'Who was it that touched me?' All disclaimed it, and Peter and his companions said, 'Master, the crowds are hemming you in and pressing upon you!' | καὶ εἶπεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Τίς ὁ ἀψάμενός μοὺ ἀρνουμένων δὲ πάντων εἶπεν ὁ Πέτρος, Ἐπιστάτα, οἱ ὀχλοι συνέχουσίν σε καὶ ἀποθλίβουσιν. | ||
| 46 | But Jesus said, 'Someone did touch me, for I felt that power had gone out from me.' | ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν, Ἡψατό μού τις, ἐγὼ γὰρ ἐγνων δύναμιν ἐξεληλυθυῖαν ἀπ' ἐμοῦ. | ||
| 47 | Then the woman, seeing that she was detected, came trembling and fell at his feet. Before all the people she explained why she had touched him and how she had been instantly cured. | ἰδοῦσα δὲ ἡ γυνὴ ὅτι οὐκ ἐλαθεν τρέμουσα ἦλθεν καὶ προσπεσοῦσα αὐτῷ δῖ ἣν αἰτίαν ἡψατο αὐτοῦ ἀπήγγειλεν ἐνώπιον παντὸς τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ ὡς ἰάθη παραχρῆμα. | ||
| 48 | He said to her, 'My daughter, your faith has cured you. Go in peace.' | ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῇ, Θυγάτηρ, ἡ πίστις σου σέσωκέν σε· πορεύου εἰς εἰρήνην. | ||
| 49 | While he was still speaking, a man came from the president's house with the message, 'Your daughter is dead; trouble the Rabbi no further.' | Ἐτι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος ἐρχεταί τις παρὰ τοῦ ἀρχισυναγώγου λέγων ὅτι Τέθνηκεν ἡ θυγάτηρ σου, μηκέτι σκύλλε τὸν διδάσκαλον. | ||
| 50 | But Jesus heard, and interposed. 'Do not be afraid,' he said; 'only show faith and she will be well again.' | ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἀκούσας ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ, Μὴ φοβοῦ, μόνον πίστευσον, καὶ σωθήσεται. | ||
| 51 | On arrival at the house he allowed no one to go in with him except Peter, John, and James, and the child's father and mother. | ἐλθὼν δὲ εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν οὐκ ἀφῆκεν εἰσελθεῖν τινα σὺν αὐτῷ εἰ μὴ Πέτρον καὶ Ἰωάννην καὶ Ἰάκωβον καὶ τὸν πατέρα τῆς παιδὸς καὶ τὴν μητέρα. | ||
| 52 | And all were weeping and lamenting for her. He said, 'Weep no more; she is not dead: she is asleep'; | ἐκλαιον δὲ πάντες καὶ ἐκόπτοντο αὐτήν. ὁ δὲ εἶπεν, Μὴ κλαίετε, οὐ γὰρ ἀπέθανεν ἀλλὰ καθεύδει. | ||
| 53 | and they only laughed at him, well knowing that she was dead. | καὶ κατεγέλων αὐτοῦ, εἰδότες ὅτι ἀπέθανεν. | ||
| 54 | But Jesus took hold of her hand and called her: 'Get up, my child.' | αὐτὸς δὲ κρατήσας τῆς χειρὸς αὐτῆς ἐφώνησεν λέγων, Ἡ παῖς, ἐγειρε. | ||
| 55 | Her spirit returned, she stood up immediately, and he told them to give her something to eat. | καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν τὸ Πνεῦμα αὐτῆς, καὶ ἀνέστη παραχρῆμα, καὶ διέταξεν αὐτῇ δοθῆναι φαγεῖν. | ||
| 56 | Her parents were astounded; but he forbade them to tell anyone what had happened. | καὶ ἐξέστησαν οἱ γονεῖς αὐτῆς· ὁ δὲ παρήγγειλεν αὐτοῖς μηδενὶ εἰπεῖν τὸ γεγονός. | ||
