ANOTHER TIME, the tax-gatherers and other bad characters were all crowding in to listen to him; | The Parable of the Lost Sheep Lk.15.1-7 (Peraea) - | Mt.18.12-14 | Ἦσαν δὲ αὐτῷ ἐγγίζοντες πάντες οἱ τελῶναι καὶ οἱ ἀμαρτωλοὶ ἀκούειν αὐτοῦ. |

and the Pharisees and the doctors of the law began grumbling among themselves: 'This fellow', they said, 'welcomes sinners and eats with them.' | | καὶ διεγόγγυζον οἱ τε Φαρισαῖοι καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς λέγοντες ὅτι Οὗτος ἀμαρτωλοὺς προσδέχεται καὶ συνεσθίει αὐτοῖς. |

He answered them with this parable: | | εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτοὺς τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην λέγων, |

'If one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them, does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open pasture and go after the missing one until he has found it? | | Τίς ἄνθρωπος ἐξ ὑμῶν ἐχων ἑκατὸν πρόβατα καὶ ἀπολέσας ἐξ αὐτῶν ἓν οὐ καταλείπει τὰ ἐνενήκοντα ἐννέα ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ καὶ πορεύεται ἐπὶ τὸ ἀπολωλὸς ἑως εὑρῃ αὐτό; |

How delighted he is then! He lifts it on to his shoulders, | | καὶ εὑρὼν ἐπιτίθησιν ἐπὶ τοὺς ὠμους αὐτοῦ χαίρων, |

and home he goes to call his friends and neighbours together. "Rejoice with me!" he cries. "I have found my lost sheep." | | καὶ ἐλθὼν εἰς τὸν οἶκον συγκαλεῖ τοὺς φίλους καὶ τοὺς γείτονας λέγων αὐτοῖς, Συγχάρητέ μοι, ὅτι εὗρον τὸ πρόβατόν μου τὸ ἀπολωλός. |

In the same way, I tell you, there will be greater joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who do not need to repent.
| | λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι οὑτως χαρὰ ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ ἐσται ἐπὶ ἑνὶ ἀμαρτωλῷ μετανοοῦντι ἢ ἐπὶ ἐνενήκοντα ἐννέα δικαίοις οἱτινες οὐ χρείαν ἐχουσιν μετανοίας. |

'Or again, if a woman has ten silver pieces and loses one of them, does she not light the lamp, sweep out the house, and look in every corner till she has found it? | The Parable of the Lost Coin Lk.15.8-10 (Peraea) - | Ἢ τίς γυνὴ δραχμὰς ἐχουσα δέκα, ἐὰν ἀπολέσῃ δραχμὴν μίαν, οὐχὶ ἀπτει λύχνον καὶ σαροῖ τὴν οἰκίαν καὶ ζητεῖ ἐπιμελῶς ἑως οὗ εὑρῃ; |

And when she has, she calls her friends and neighbours together, and says, "Rejoice with me! I have found the piece that I lost." | | καὶ εὑροῦσα συγκαλεῖ τὰς φίλας καὶ γείτονας λέγουσα, Συγχάρητέ μοι, ὅτι εὗρον τὴν δραχμὴν ἣν ἀπώλεσα. |

In the same way, I tell you, there is joy among the angels of God over one sinner who repents.'
| | οὑτως, λέγω ὑμῖν, γίνεται χαρὰ ἐνώπιον τῶν ἀγγέλων τοῦ θεοῦ ἐπὶ ἑνὶ ἀμαρτωλῷ μετανοοῦντι. |

Again he said: 'There was once a man who had two sons; | The Parable of the Lost Son Lk.15.11-32 (Peraea) - | Εἶπεν δέ, Ἄνθρωπός τις εἶχεν δύο υἱούς. |

and the younger said to his father, "Father, give me my share of the property." So he divided his estate between them. | | καὶ εἶπεν ὁ νεώτερος αὐτῶν τῷ πατρί, Πάτερ, δός μοι τὸ ἐπιβάλλον μέρος τῆς οὐσίας. ὁ δὲ διεῖλεν αὐτοῖς τὸν βίον. |

A few days later the younger son turned the whole of his share into cash and left home for a distant country, where he squandered it in reckless living. | | καὶ μετ' οὐ πολλὰς ἡμέρας συναγαγὼν πάντα ὁ νεώτερος υἱὸς ἀπεδήμησεν εἰς χώραν μακράν, καὶ ἐκεῖ διεσκόρπισεν τὴν οὐσίαν αὐτοῦ ζῶν ἀσώτως. |

He had spent it all, when a severe famine fell upon that country and he began to feel the pinch. | | δαπανήσαντος δὲ αὐτοῦ πάντα ἐγένετο λιμὸς ἰσχυρὰ κατὰ τὴν χώραν ἐκείνην, καὶ αὐτὸς ἠρξατο ὑστερεῖσθαι. |

So he went and attached himself to one of the local landowners, who sent him on to his farm to mind the pigs. | | καὶ πορευθεὶς ἐκολλήθη ἑνὶ τῶν πολιτῶν τῆς χώρας ἐκείνης, καὶ ἐπεμψεν αὐτὸν εἰς τοὺς ἀγροὺς αὐτοῦ βόσκειν χοίρους· |

He would have been glad to fill his belly with the pods that the pigs were eating; and no one gave him anything. | | καὶ ἐπεθύμει χορτασθῆναι ἐκ τῶν κερατίων ὧν ἠσθιον οἱ χοῖροι, καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐδίδου αὐτῷ. |

Then he came to his senses and said, "How many of my father's paid servants have more food than they can eat, and here am I, starving to death! | | εἰς ἑαυτὸν δὲ ἐλθὼν ἐφη, Πόσοι μίσθιοι τοῦ πατρός μου περισσεύονται ἀρτων, ἐγὼ δὲ λιμῷ ὧδε ἀπόλλυμαι. |

I will set off and go to my father, and say to him, 'Father, I have sinned, against God and against you; | | ἀναστὰς πορεύσομαι πρὸς τὸν πατέρα μου καὶ ἐρῶ αὐτῷ, Πάτερ, ἡμαρτον εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ ἐνώπιόν σου, |

I am no longer fit to be called your son; treat me as one of your paid servants.' | | οὐκέτι εἰμὶ ἄξιος κληθῆναι υἱός σου· ποίησόν με ὡς ἑνα τῶν μισθίων σου. |
| 20 |
"So he set out for his father's house. But while he was still a long way off his father saw him, and his heart went out to him. He ran to meet him, flung his arms round him, and kissed him. | | καὶ ἀναστὰς ἦλθεν πρὸς τὸν πατέρα ἑαυτοῦ. ἐτι δὲ αὐτοῦ μακρὰν ἀπέχοντος εἶδεν αὐτὸν ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐσπλαγχνίσθη καὶ δραμὼν ἐπέπεσεν ἐπὶ τὸν τράχηλον αὐτοῦ καὶ κατεφίλησεν αὐτόν. |

The son said, "Father, I have sinned, against God and against you; I am no longer fit to be called your son." | | εἶπεν δὲ ὁ υἱὸς αὐτῷ, Πάτερ, ἡμαρτον εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ ἐνώπιόν σου, οὐκέτι εἰμὶ ἄξιος κληθῆναι υἱός σου. |

But the father said to his servants, "Quick! fetch a robe, my best one, and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and shoes on his feet. | | εἶπεν δὲ ὁ πατὴρ πρὸς τοὺς δούλους αὐτοῦ, Ταχὺ ἐξενέγκατε στολὴν τὴν πρώτην καὶ ἐνδύσατε αὐτόν, καὶ δότε δακτύλιον εἰς τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ καὶ ὑποδήματα εἰς τοὺς πόδας, |

Bring the fatted calf and kill it, and let us have a feast to celebrate the day. | | καὶ φέρετε τὸν μόσχον τὸν σιτευτόν, θύσατε καὶ φαγόντες εὐφρανθῶμεν, |
| 24 |
For this son of mine was dead and has come back to life; he was lost and is found." And the festivities began.
| | ὁτι οὗτος ὁ υἱός μου νεκρὸς ἦν καὶ ἀνέζησεν, ἦν ἀπολωλὼς καὶ εὑρέθη. καὶ ἠρξαντο εὐφραίνεσθαι. |

'Now the elder son was out on the farm; and on his way back, as he approached the house, he heard music and dancing. | | Ἦν δὲ ὁ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ὁ πρεσβύτερος ἐν ἀγρῷ· καὶ ὡς ἐρχόμενος ἠγγισεν τῇ οἰκίᾳ, ἠκουσεν συμφωνίας καὶ χορῶν, |

He called one of the servants and asked what it meant. | | καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος ἑνα τῶν παίδων ἐπυνθάνετο τί ἂν εἰη ταῦτα. |
| 27 |
The servant told him, "Your brother has come home, and your father has killed the fatted | | ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὅτι Ὁ ἀδελφός σου ἡκει, καὶ ἐθυσεν ὁ πατήρ σου τὸν μόσχον τὸν σιτευτόν, ὅτι ὑγιαίνοντα αὐτὸν ἀπέλαβεν. |

calf because he has him back safe and sound." But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out | | ὠργίσθη δὲ καὶ οὐκ ἠθελεν εἰσελθεῖν. ὁ δὲ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ ἐξελθὼν παρεκάλει αὐτόν. |

and pleaded with him; but he retorted, "You know how I have slaved for you all these years; I never once disobeyed your orders; and you never gave me so much as a kid, for a feast with my friends. | | ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν τῷ πατρὶ αὐτοῦ, Ἰδοὺ τοσαῦτα ἐτη δουλεύω σοι καὶ οὐδέποτε ἐντολήν σου παρῆλθον, καὶ ἐμοὶ οὐδέποτε ἐδωκας ἐριφον ἵνα μετὰ τῶν φίλων μου εὐφρανθῶ· |
| 30 |
But now that this son of yours turns up, after running through your money with his women, you kill the fatted calf for him." | | ὅτε δὲ ὁ υἱός σου οὗτος ὁ καταφαγών σου τὸν βίον μετὰ πορνῶν ἦλθεν, ἐθυσας αὐτῷ τὸν σιτευτὸν μόσχον. |
| 31 |
"My boy," said the father, "you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. | | ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ, Τέκνον, σὺ πάντοτε μετ' ἐμοῦ εἶ, καὶ πάντα τὰ ἐμὰ σά ἐστιν· |
| 32 |
How could we help celebrating this happy day? Your brother here was dead and has come back to life, was lost and is found."'
| | εὐφρανθῆναι δὲ καὶ χαρῆναι ἐδει, ὅτι ὁ ἀδελφός σου οὗτος νεκρὸς ἦν καὶ ἐζησεν, καὶ ἀπολωλὼς καὶ εὑρέθη. |
