1Ὑπολαβὼν δὲ Ιωβ λέγει
 Then Job answered and said,
Job. Jb.9.1-10.22Then Job answered:וַיַּעַנ אִיֹּוב וַיֹּאמַר׃ 1
2Ἑπ' ἀληθείας οἶδα ὅτι οὕτως ἐστίν·
πῶς γὰρ ἔσται δίκαιος βροτὸς παρὰ κυρίῳ;
 I know of a truth that it is so:
for how shall a mortal man be just before the Lord?
 "Truly I know that it is so:
But how can a man be just before God?
אָמְנָם יָדַעְתִּי כִי־כֵן וּמַה־יִּצְדַּק אֱנֹושׁ עִם־אֵל׃ 2
3ἐὰν γὰρ βούληται κριθῆναι αὐτῷ,
οὐ μὴ ὑπακούσῃ αὐτῷ,
ἵνα μὴ ἀντείπῃ πρὸς ἕνα λόγον αὐτοῦ ἐκ χιλίων.
 For if he would enter into judgment with him,
[God] would not listen to him,
so that he should answer to one of his charges of a thousand.
 If one wished to contend with him,
one could not answer him once in a thousand times.
אִם־יַחְפֹּץ לָרִיב עִמֹּו לֹא־יַעֲנֶנּוּ אַחַת מִנִּי־אָלֶף׃ 3
4σοφὸς γάρ ἐστιν διανοίᾳ, κραταιός τε καὶ μέγας·
τίς σκληρὸς γενόμενος ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ ὑπέμεινεν;
 For he is wise in mind, and mighty, and great:
who has hardened himself against him and endured?
 He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength -
who has hardened himself against him, and succeeded? -
חֲכַם לֵבָב וְאַמִּיץ כֹּחַ מִי־הִקְשָׁה אֵלָיו וַיִּשְׁלָם׃ 4
5ὁ παλαιῶν ὄρη καὶ οὐκ οἴδασιν,
ὁ καταστρέφων αὐτὰ ὀργῇ·
 Who wears out the mountains, and [men] know it not:
who overturns them in anger.
 he who removes mountains, and they know it not,
when he overturns them in his anger;
הַמַּעְתִּיק הָרִים וְלֹא יָדָעוּ אֲשֶׁר הֲפָכָם בְּאַפֹּו׃ 5
6ὁ σείων τὴν ὑπ' οὐρανὸν ἐκ θεμελίων,
οἱ δὲ στῦλοι αὐτῆς σαλεύονται·
 Who shakes the [earth] under heaven from its foundations,
and its pillars totter.
 who shakes the earth out of its place,
and its pillars tremble;
הַמַּרְגִּיז אֶרֶץ מִמְּקֹומָהּ וְעַמּוּדֶיהָ יִתְפַלָּצוּן׃ 6
7ὁ λέγων τῷ ἡλίῳ καὶ οὐκ ἀνατέλλει,
κατὰ δὲ ἄστρων κατασφραγίζει·
 Who commands the sun, and it rises not;
and he seals up the stars.
 who commands the sun, and it does not rise;
who seals up the stars;
הָאֹמֵר לַחֶרֶס וְלֹא יִזְרָח וּבְעַד כֹּוכָבִים יַחְתֹּם׃ 7
8ὁ τανύσας τὸν οὐρανὸν μόνος,
καὶ περιπατῶν ὡς ἐπ' ἐδάφους ἐπὶ θαλάσσης·
 Who alone has stretched out the heavens,
and walks on the sea as on firm ground.
 who alone stretched out the heavens,
and trampled the waves of the sea;
נֹטֶה שָׁמַיִם לְבַדֹּו וְדֹורֵךְ עַל־בָּמֳתֵי יָם׃ 8
9ὁ ποιῶν Πλειάδα καὶ Ἕσπερον καὶ Ἀρκτοῦρον καὶ ταμίεια νότου·
 Who makes Pleias, and Hesperus, and Arcturus,
and the chambers of the south.
 who made the Bear and Orion,
the Plei'ades and the chambers of the south;
עֹשֶׂה־עָשׁ כְּסִיל וְכִימָה וְחַדְרֵי תֵמָן׃ 9
10ὁ ποιῶν μεγάλα καὶ ἀνεξιχνίαστα,
ἔνδοξά τε καὶ ἐξαίσια, ὧν οὐκ ἔστιν ἀριθμός.
 Who does great and unsearchable things;
glorious also and excellent things, innumerable.
 who does great things beyond understanding,
and marvelous things without number.
עֹשֶׂה גְדֹלֹות עַד־אֵין חֵקֶר וְנִפְלָאֹות עַד־אֵין מִסְפָּר׃ 10
11ἐὰν ὑπερβῇ με, οὐ μὴ ἴδω·
καὶ ἐὰν παρέλθῃ με, οὐδ' ὧς ἔγνων.
 If ever he should go beyond me, I shall not see him:
if he should pass by me, neither thus have I known [it].
 Lo, he passes by me, and I see him not;
he moves on, but I do not perceive him.
הֵן יַעֲבֹר עָלַי וְלֹא אֶרְאֶה וְיַחֲלֹף וְלֹא־אָבִין לֹו׃ 11
12ἐὰν ἀπαλλάξῃ, τίς ἀποστρέψει;
ἢ τίς ἐρεῖ αὐτῷ Τί ἐποίησας;
 If he would take away, who shall turn him back?
or who shall say to him, What have you done?
 Behold, he snatches away; who can hinder him?
Who will say to him, 'What doest thou'?
הֵן יַחְתֹּף מִי יְשִׁיבֶנּוּ מִי־יֹאמַר אֵלָיו מַה־תַּעֲשֶׂה׃ 12
13αὐτὸς γὰρ ἀπέστραπται ὀργήν,
ὑπ' αὐτοῦ ἐκάμφθησαν κήτη τὰ ὑπ' οὐρανόν.
 For [if] he has turned away [his] anger,
the whales under heaven have stooped under him.
 "God will not turn back his anger;
beneath him bowed the helpers of Rahab.
אֱלֹוהַּ לֹא־יָשִׁיב אַפֹּו [כ= תַּחַתֹו] [ק= תַּחְתָּיו] שָׁחֲחוּ עֹזְרֵי רָהַב׃ 13
14ἐὰν δέ μου ὑπακούσηται,
ἦ διακρινεῖ τὰ ῥήματά μου.
 Oh then that he would listen to me,
or judge my cause.
 How then can I answer him,
choosing my words with him?
אַף כִּי־אָנֹכִי אֶעֱנֶנּוּ אֶבְחֲרָה דְבָרַי עִמֹּו׃ 14
15ἐάν τε γὰρ ὦ δίκαιος, οὐκ εἰσακούσεταί μου,
τοῦ κρίματος αὐτοῦ δεηθήσομαι·507
 For though I be righteous,
he will not listen to me:
I will intreat his judgment.
 Though I am innocent, I cannot answer him;
I must appeal for mercy to my accuser.
אֲשֶׁר אִם־צָדַקְתִּי לֹא אֶעֱנֶה לִמְשֹׁפְטִי אֶתְחַןָּן׃ 15
16ἐάν τε καλέσω καὶ ὑπακούσῃ,
οὐ πιστεύω ὅτι εἰσακήκοέν μου.
 And if I should call and he should not listen,
I cannot believe that he has listened to my voice.
 If I summoned him and he answered me,
I would not believe that he was listening to my voice.
אִם־קָרָאתִי וַיַּעֲנֵנִי לֹא־אַאֲמִין כִּי־יַאֲזִין קֹולִי׃ 16
17μὴ γνόφῳ με ἐκτρίψῃ;
πολλὰ δέ μου τὰ συντρίμματα πεποίηκεν διὰ κενῆς.
 Let him not crush me with a dark storm:
but he has made by bruises many without cause.
 For he crushes me with a tempest,
and multiplies my wounds without cause;
אֲשֶׁר־בִּשְׂעָרָה יְשׁוּפֵנִי וְהִרְבָּה פְצָעַי חִנָּם׃ 17
18οὐκ ἐᾷ γάρ με ἀναπνεῦσαι,
ἐνέπλησεν δέ με πικρίας.
 For he suffers me not to take breath,
but he has filled me with bitterness.
 he will not let me get my breath,
but fills me with bitterness.
לֹא־יִתְּנֵנִי הָשֵׁב רוּחִי כִּי יַשְׂבִּעַנִי מַמְּרֹרִים׃ 18
19ὅτι μὲν γὰρ ἰσχύι κρατεῖ·
τίς οὖν κρίματι αὐτοῦ ἀντιστήσεται;
 For indeed he is strong in power:
who then shall resist his judgment?
 If it is a contest of strength, behold him!
If it is a matter of justice, who can summon him?
אִם־לְכֹחַ אַמִּיץ הִנֵּה וְאִם־לְמִשְׁפָּט מִי יֹועִידֵנִי׃ 19
20ἐὰν γὰρ ὦ δίκαιος, τὸ στόμα μου ἀσεβήσει·
ἐάν τε ὦ ἄμεμπτος, σκολιὸς ἀποβήσομαι.
 For though I should seem righteous,
my mouth will be profane:
and though I should seem blameless,
I shall be proved perverse.
 Though I am innocent, my own mouth would condemn me;
though I am blameless, he would prove me perverse.
אִם־אֶצְדָּק פִּי יַרְשִׁיעֵנִי תָּם־אָנִי וַיַּעְקְשֵׁנִי׃ 20
21εἴτε γὰρ ἠσέβησα, οὐκ οἶδα τῇ ψυχῇ,
πλὴν ὅτι ἀφαιρεῖταί μου ἡ ζωή.
 For even if I have sinned,
I know it not [in] my soul:
but my life is taken away.
 I am blameless; I regard not myself;
I loathe my life.
תָּם־אָנִי לֹא־אֵדַע נַפְשִׁי אֶמְאַס חַיָּי׃ 21
22διὸ εἶπον Μέγαν καὶ δυνάστην ἀπολλύει ὀργή,
 Why I said, Wrath slays the great and mighty man.
 It is all one; therefore I say,
he destroys both the blameless and the wicked.
אַחַת הִיא עַל־כֵּן אָמַרְתִּי תָּם וְרָשָׁע הוּא מְכַלֶּה׃ 22
23ὅτι φαῦλοι ἐν θανάτῳ ἐξαισίῳ,
ἀλλὰ δίκαιοι καταγελῶνται·
 For the worthless die,
but the righteous are laughed to scorn.
 When disaster brings sudden death,
he mocks at the calamity of the innocent.
אִם־שֹׁוט יָמִית פִּתְאֹם לְמַסַּת נְקִיִּם יִלְעָג׃ 23
24παραδέδονται γὰρ εἰς χεῖρας ἀσεβοῦς.
πρόσωπα κριτῶν αὐτῆς συγκαλύπτει·
εἰ δὲ μὴ αὐτός, τίς ἐστιν;
 For they are delivered into the hands of the unrighteous [man]:
he covers the faces of the judges [of the earth]:
but if it be not he,
who is it?
 The earth is given into the hand of the wicked;
he covers the faces of its judges - if it is not he, who then is it?
אֶרֶץ נִתְּנָה בְיַד־רָשָׁע פְּנֵי־שֹׁפְטֶיהָ יְכַסֶּה אִם־לֹא אֵפֹוא מִי־הוּא׃ 24
25ὁ δὲ βίος μού ἐστιν ἐλαφρότερος δρομέως·
ἀπέδρασαν καὶ οὐκ εἴδοσαν.
 But my life is swifter than a post:
[my days] have fled away,
and they knew it not.
 "My days are swifter than a runner;
they flee away, they see no good.
וְיָמַי קַלּוּ מִנִּי־רָץ בָּרְחוּ לֹא־רָאוּ טֹובָה׃ 25
26ἦ καὶ ἔστιν ναυσὶν ἴχνος ὁδοῦ ἢ ἀετοῦ πετομένου ζητοῦντος βοράν;
 Or again, is there a trace of [their] path [left] by ships?
or is there one of the flying eagle as it seeks [its] prey?
 They go by like skiffs of reed,
like an eagle swooping on the prey.
חָלְפוּ עִם־אֳנִיֹּות אֵבֶה כְּנֶשֶׁר יָטוּשׂ עֲלֵי־אֹכֶל׃ 26
27ἐάν τε γὰρ εἴπω, ἐπιλήσομαι λαλῶν,
συγκύψας τῷ προσώπῳ στενάξω.
 And if I should say, I will forget to speak,
I will bow down my face and groan;
 If I say, 'I will forget my complaint,
I will put off my sad countenance, and be of good cheer,'
אִם־אָמְרִי אֶשְׁכְּחָה שִׂיחִי אֶעֶזְבָה פָנַי וְאַבְלִיגָה׃ 27
28σείομαι πᾶσιν τοῖς μέλεσιν,
οἶδα γὰρ ὅτι οὐκ ἀθῷόν με ἐάσεις.
 I quake in all my limbs,
for I know that you will not leave me alone [as] innocent.
 I become afraid of all my suffering,
for I know thou wilt not hold me innocent.
יָגֹרְתִּי כָל־עַצְּבֹתָי יָדַעְתִּי כִּי־לֹא תְנַקֵּנִי׃ 28
29ἐπειδὴ δέ εἰμι ἀσεβής, διὰ τί οὐκ ἀπέθανον;
 But since I am ungodly,
why have I not died?
 I shall be condemned;
why then do I labor in vain?
אָנֹכִי אֶרְשָׁע לָמָּה־זֶּה הֶבֶל אִיגָע׃ 29
30ἐὰν γὰρ ἀπολούσωμαι χιόνι,
καὶ ἀποκαθάρωμαι χερσὶν καθαραῖς,
 For if I should wash myself with snow,
and purge myself with pure hands,
 If I wash myself with snow,
and cleanse my hands with lye,
אִם־הִתְרָחַצְתִּי [כ= בְמֹו] [ק= בְמֵי]־שָׁלֶג וַהֲזִכֹּותִי בְּבֹר כַּפָּי׃ 30
31ἱκανῶς ἐν ῥύπῳ με ἔβαψας,
ἐβδελύξατο δέ με ἡ στολή.
 you had thoroughly plunged me in filth,
and my garment had abhorred me.
 yet thou wilt plunge me into a pit,
and my own clothes will abhor me.
אָז בַּשַּׁחַת תִּטְבְּלֵנִי וְתִעֲבוּנִי שַׂלְמֹותָי׃ 31
32οὐ γὰρ εἶ ἄνθρωπος κατ' ἐμέ, ᾧ ἀντικρινοῦμαι,
ἵνα ἔλθωμεν ὁμοθυμαδὸν εἰς κρίσιν.
 For you are not man like me,
with whom I could contend,
that we might come together to judgment.
 For he is not a man, as I am, that I might answer him,
that we should come to trial together.
כִּי־לֹא־אִישׁ כָּמֹנִי אֶעֱנֶנּוּ נָבֹוא יַחְדָּו בַּמִּשְׁפָּט׃ 32
33εἴθε ἦν ὁ μεσίτης ἡμῶν καὶ ἐλέγχων
καὶ διακούων ἀνὰ μέσον ἀμφοτέρων·
 Would that [he] our mediator were [present], and a reprover,
and one who should hear [the cause] between both.
 There is no umpire between us,
who might lay his hand upon us both.
לֹא יֵשׁ־בֵּינֵינוּ מֹוכִיחַ יָשֵׁת יָדֹו עַל־שְׁנֵינוּ׃ 33
34ἀπαλλαξάτω ἀπ' ἐμοῦ τὴν ῥάβδον,
ὁ δὲ φόβος αὐτοῦ μή με στροβείτω,
 Let him remove [his] rod from me,
and let not his fear terrify me:
 Let him take his rod away from me,
and let not dread of him terrify me.
יָסֵר מֵעָלַי שִׁבְטֹו וְאֵמָתֹו אַל־תְּבַעֲתַנִּי׃ 34
35καὶ οὐ μὴ φοβηθῶ, ἀλλὰ λαλήσω·
οὐ γὰρ οὕτω συνεπίσταμαι.
 so shall I not be afraid, but I will speak:
for I am not thus conscious [of guilt].
 Then I would speak without fear of him,
for I am not so in myself.		אַדַבְּרָה וְלֹא אִירָאֶנּוּ כִּי לֹא־כֵן אָנֹכִי עִמָּדִי׃ 35
