| 40 | ΙΩΒ | Brenton(Lxx) | JOB | Revised Standard Version | JOB | 40 |
And the Lord yet again answered and spoke to Job out of the cloud, [saying], | The LORD. Jb.40.6-41.34 | Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind: | וַיַּעַן־יְהוָה אֶת־אִיֹּוב [כ= מִנם] [ק= מִן] [כ= סְעָרָה] [ק= סְעָרָה] וַיֹּאמַר׃ | 6 |
Nay, gird up now your loins like a man; and I will ask you, and you shall answer me. | "Gird up your loins like a man; I will question you, and you declare to me.
Do not set aside my judgment: and do you think that I have dealt with you in any other way, than that you might appear to be righteous? | Will you even put me in the wrong? Will you condemn me that you may be justified?
Have you an arm like the Lord's? or do you thunder with a voice like his? | Have you an arm like God, and can you thunder with a voice like his?
Assume now a lofty bearing and power; and clothe yourself with glory and honour. | "Deck yourself with majesty and dignity; clothe yourself with glory and splendor.
And send forth messengers with wrath; and lay low every haughty one. | Pour forth the overflowings of your anger, and look on every one that is proud, and abase him.
Bring down also the proud man; and consume at once the ungodly. | Look on every one that is proud, and bring him low; and tread down the wicked where they stand.
And hide them together in the earth; and fill their faces with shame. | Hide them all in the dust together; bind their faces in the world below.
[Then] will I confess that your right hand can save [you]. | Then will I also acknowledge to you, that your own right hand can give you victory.
But now look at the wild beasts with you; they eat grass like oxen. | "Behold, Be'hemoth, which I made as I made you; he eats grass like an ox.
Behold now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly. | Behold, his strength in his loins, and his power in the muscles of his belly.
He sets up his tail like a cypress; and his nerves are wrapped together. | He makes his tail stiff like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are knit together.
His sides are sides of brass; and his backbone is [as] cast iron. | His bones are tubes of bronze, his limbs like bars of iron. |
This is the chief of the creation of the Lord; made to be played with by his angels. | "He is the first of the works of God; let him who made him bring near his sword!
And when he has gone up to a steep mountain, he causes joy to the quadrupeds in the deep. | For the mountains yield food for him where all the wild beasts play.
He lies under trees of every kind, by the papyrus, and reed, and bulrush. | Under the lotus plants he lies, in the covert of the reeds and in the marsh.
And the great trees make a shadow over him with their branches, and [so do] the bushes of the field. | For his shade the lotus trees cover him; the willows of the brook surround him.
If there should be a flood, he will not perceive it; he trust that Jordan will rush up into his mouth. | Behold, if the river is turbulent he is not frightened; he is confident though Jordan rushes against his mouth.
[Yet one] shall take him in his sight; [one] shall catch [him] with a cord, and pierce his nose. | Can one take him with hooks, or pierce his nose with a snare?
But will you catch the serpent with a hook, and put a halter about his nose? | "Can you draw out Levi'athan with a fishhook, or press down his tongue with a cord?
Or will you fasten a ring in his nostril, and bore his lip with a clasp? | Can you put a rope in his nose, or pierce his jaw with a hook?
Will he address you with a petition? softly, with the voice of a suppliant? | Will he make many supplications to you? Will he speak to you soft words?
And will he make a covenant with you? and will you take him for a perpetual servant? | Will he make a covenant with you to take him for your servant for ever?
And will you play with him as with a bird? or bind him as a sparrow for a child? | Will you play with him as with a bird, or will you put him on leash for your maidens?
And do the nations feed upon him, and the nations of the Phoenicians share him? | Will traders bargain over him? Will they divide him up among the merchants?
And all the ships come together would not be able to bear the mere skin of his tail; neither [shall they carry] his head in fishing-vessels. | Can you fill his skin with harpoons, or his head with fishing spears?
But you shall lay your hand upon him [once], remembering the war that is waged by his mouth; and let it not be done any more. | Lay hands on him; think of the battle; you will not do it again!
