38ΙΩΒBrenton(Lxx)JOB Revised Standard VersionJOB 38

And after Elius had ceased from speaking,
the Lord spoke to Job through the whirlwind and clouds, [saying],
The LORD answers Job. Jb.38.1-42.3. The LORD. Jb.38.1-40.2Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind:
συνέχων δὲ ῥήματα ἐν καρδίᾳ, ἐμὲ δὲ οἴεται κρύπτειν;
Who is this that hides counsel from me,
and hides words in [his] heart, and thinks to conceal [them] from me?
 "Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?
Gird your loins like a man;
and I will ask you, and you shall answer me.
 Gird up your loins like a man,
I will question you, and you shall declare to me.
4ποῦ ἦς ἐν τῷ θεμελιοῦν με τὴν γῆν;
Where was you when I founded the earth?
tell me now, if you have knowledge,
 "Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell me, if you have understanding.
5τίς ἔθετο τὰ μέτρα αὐτῆς, εἰ οἶδας;
ἢ τίς ὁ ἐπαγαγὼν σπαρτίον ἐπ' αὐτῆς;
who set the measures of it, if you know?
or who stretched a line upon it?
 Who determined its measurements - surely you know!
Or who stretched the line upon it?
6ἐπὶ τίνος οἱ κρίκοι αὐτῆς πεπήγασιν;
τίς δέ ἐστιν ὁ βαλὼν λίθον γωνιαῖον ἐπ' αὐτῆς;
On what are its rings fastened?
and who is he that laid the corner-stone upon it?
 On what were its bases sunk,
or who laid its cornerstone,
When the stars were made,
all my angels praised me with a loud voice.
 when the morning stars sang together,
and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
And I shut up the sea with gates,
when it rushed out, coming forth out its mother's womb.
 "Or who shut in the sea with doors,
when it burst forth from the womb;
And I made a cloud its clothing,
and swathed it in mist.
 when I made clouds its garment,
and thick darkness its swaddling band,
And I set bounds to it,
surrounding it with bars and gates.
 and prescribed bounds for it,
and set bars and doors,
And I said to it, Hitherto shall you come, but you shall not go beyond,
but your waves shall be confined within you.
 and said, 'Thus far shall you come, and no farther,
and here shall your proud waves be stayed'?
Or did I order the morning light in your time;
and [did] the morning star [then first] see his appointed place;
 "Have you commanded the morning since your days began,
and caused the dawn to know its place,
ἐκτινάξαι ἀσεβεῖς ἐξ αὐτῆς;
to lay hold of the extremities of the earth,
to cast out the ungodly out of it?
 that it might take hold of the skirts of the earth,
and the wicked be shaken out of it?
καὶ λαλητὸν αὐτὸν ἔθου ἐπὶ γῆς;
Or did you take clay of the ground, and form a living creature,
and set it with the power of speech upon the earth?
 It is changed like clay under the seal,
and it is dyed like a garment.
βραχίονα δὲ ὑπερηφάνων συνέτριψας;
And have you removed light from the ungodly,
and crushed the arm of the proud?
 From the wicked their light is withheld,
and their uplifted arm is broken.
ἐν δὲ ἴχνεσιν ἀβύσσου περιεπάτησας;
Or have you gone to the source of the sea,
and walked in the tracks of the deep?
 "Have you entered into the springs of the sea,
or walked in the recesses of the deep?
πυλωροὶ δὲ ᾅδου ἰδόντες σε ἔπτηξαν;
And do the gates of death open to you for fear;
and did the porters of hell quake when they saw you?
 Have the gates of death been revealed to you,
or have you seen the gates of deep darkness?
18νενουθέτησαι δὲ τὸ εὖρος τῆς ὑπ' οὐρανόν;
And have you been instructed in the breadth of the [whole earth] under heaven?
tell me now, what is the extent of it?
 Have you comprehended the expanse of the earth?
Declare, if you know all this.
σκότους δὲ ποῖος ὁ τόπος;
And in what kind of a land does the light dwell?
and of what kind is the place of darkness?
 "Where is the way to the dwelling of light,
and where is the place of darkness,
20εἰ ἀγάγοις με εἰς ὅρια αὐτῶν;
εἰ δὲ καὶ ἐπίστασαι τρίβους αὐτῶν;
If you could bring me to their [utmost] boundaries,
and if also you know their paths;
 that you may take it to its territory
and that you may discern the paths to its home?
I know then that you was born at that time,
and the number of your years is great.
 You know, for you were born then,
and the number of your days is great!
But have you gone to the treasures of snow?
and have you seen the treasures of hail?
 "Have you entered the storehouses of the snow,
or have you seen the storehouses of the hail,
And is there a store [of them],
for you against the time of [thine] enemies,
for the day of wars and battle?
 which I have reserved for the time of trouble,
for the day of battle and war?
ἢ διασκεδάννυται νότος εἰς τὴν ὑπ' οὐρανόν;
And whence proceeds the frost?
or [whence] is the south wind dispersed over the [whole world] under heaven?
 What is the way to the place where the light is distributed,
or where the east wind is scattered upon the earth?
And who prepared a course for the violent rain,
and a way for the thunders;
 "Who has cleft a channel for the torrents of rain,
and a way for the thunderbolt,
to rain upon the land where [there is] no man,
the wilderness, where there is not a man in it;
so as to feed the untrodden and uninhabited [land],
 to bring rain on a land where no man is, on the desert
in which there is no man;
καὶ τοῦ ἐκβλαστῆσαι ἔξοδον χλόης;
and cause it to send forth a crop of green herbs?
 to satisfy the waste and desolate land,
and to make the ground put forth grass?
28τίς ἐστιν ὑετοῦ πατήρ;
τίς δέ ἐστιν ὁ τετοκὼς βώλους δρόσου;
Who is the rain's father?
and who has generated the drops of dew?
 "Has the rain a father,
or who has begotten the drops of dew?
29ἐκ γαστρὸς δὲ τίνος ἐκπορεύεται ὁ κρύσταλλος;
And out of whose womb comes the ice?
and who has produced the frost in the sky,
 From whose womb did the ice come forth,
and who has given birth to the hoarfrost of heaven?
30ἣ καταβαίνει ὥσπερ ὕδωρ ῥέον;
πρόσωπον δὲ ἀβύσσου τίς ἔπηξεν;
which descends like flowing water?
who has terrified the face of the ungodly?
 The waters become hard like stone,
and the face of the deep is frozen.
καὶ φραγμὸν Ὠρίωνος ἤνοιξας;
And do you understand the band of Pleias,
and have you opened the barrier of Orion?
 "Can you bind the chains of the Plei'ades,
or loose the cords of Orion?
καὶ Ἕσπερον ἐπὶ κόμης αὐτοῦ ἄξεις αὐτά;
Or will you reveal Mazuroth in his season,
and the evening star with his rays?
Will you guide them?
 Can you lead forth the Maz'zaroth in their season,
or can you guide the Bear with its children?
ἢ τὰ ὑπ' οὐρανὸν ὁμοθυμαδὸν γινόμενα;
And know you the changes of heaven,
or the events which take place together under heaven?
 Do you know the ordinances of the heavens?
Can you establish their rule on the earth?
καὶ τρόμῳ ὕδατος λάβρῳ ὑπακούσεταί σου;
And will you call a cloud with your voice,
and will it obey you with a violent shower of much rain?
 "Can you lift up your voice to the clouds,
that a flood of waters may cover you?
35ἀποστελεῖς δὲ κεραυνοὺς καὶ πορεύσονται;
ἐροῦσιν δέ σοι Τί ἐστιν;
And will you send lightnings, and they shall go?
and shall they say to you, What is [your pleasure]?
 Can you send forth lightnings, that they may go
and say to you, 'Here we are'?
36τίς δὲ ἔδωκεν γυναιξὶν ὑφάσματος σοφίαν ἢ ποικιλτικὴν ἐπιστήμην;
And who has given to women skill in weaving,
or knowledge of embroidery?
 Who has put wisdom in the clouds,
or given understanding to the mists?
οὐρανὸν δὲ εἰς γῆν ἔκλινεν;
And who is he that numbers the clouds in wisdom,
and has bowed the heaven [down] to the earth?
 Who can number the clouds by wisdom?
Or who can tilt the waterskins of the heavens,
For it is spread out as dusty earth,
and I have cemented it as one hewn stone to another.
 when the dust runs into a mass
and the clods cleave fast together?
ψυχὰς δὲ δρακόντων ἐμπλήσεις;
And will you hunt a prey for the lions?
and satisfy the desires of the serpents?
 "Can you hunt the prey for the lion,
or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,
For they fear in their lairs,
and lying in wait couch in the woods.
 when they crouch in their dens,
or lie in wait in their covert?
41τίς δὲ ἡτοίμασεν κόρακι βοράν;
And who has prepared food for the raven?
for its young ones wander and cry to the Lord, in search of food.
 Who provides for the raven its prey,
when its young ones cry to God,
and wander about for lack of food?
