1οὐ μὴν δὲ ἀλλὰ ἄκουσον, Ιωβ, τὰ ῥήματά μου,
καὶ λαλιὰν ἐνωτίζου μου·
 Howbeit hear, Job, my words,
and listen to my speech.
 "But now, hear my speech, O Job,
and listen to all my words.
וְאוּלָם שְׁמַע־נָא אִיֹּוב מִלָּי וְכָל־דְּבָרַי הַאֲזִינָה׃ 1
2ἰδοὺ γὰρ ἤνοιξα τὸ στόμα μου,
καὶ ἐλάλησεν ἡ γλῶσσά μου.
 For behold, I have opened my mouth,
and my tongue has spoken.
 Behold, I open my mouth;
the tongue in my mouth speaks.
הִנֵּה־נָא פָּתַחְתִּי פִי דִּבְּרָה לְשֹׁונִי בְחִכִּי׃ 2
3καθαρά μου ἡ καρδία ῥήμασιν,
σύνεσις δὲ χειλέων μου καθαρὰ νοήσει.
 My heart [shall be found] pure by [my] words;
and the understanding of my lips shall meditate purity.
 My words declare the uprightness of my heart,
and what my lips know they speak sincerely.
יֹשֶׁר־לִבִּי אֲמָרָי וְדַעַת שְׂפָתַי בָּרוּר מִלֵּלוּ׃ 3
4πνεῦμα θεῖον τὸ ποιῆσάν με,
πνοὴ δὲ παντοκράτορος ἡ διδάσκουσά με.
 The Divine Spirit is that which formed me,
and the breath of the Almighty that which teaches me.
 The spirit of God has made me,
and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
רוּחַ־אֵל עָשָׂתְנִי וְנִשְׁמַת שַׁדַּי תְּחַיֵּנִי׃ 4
5ἐὰν δύνῃ, δός μοι ἀπόκρισιν πρὸς ταῦτα·
ὑπόμεινον, στῆθι κατ' ἐμὲ καὶ ἐγὼ κατὰ σέ.
 If you can, give me an answer:
wait therefore; stand against me,
and I [will stand] against you.
 Answer me, if you can;
set your words in order before me; take your stand.
אִם־תּוּכַל הֲשִׁיבֵנִי עֶרְכָה לְפָנַי הִתְיַצָּבָה׃ 5
6ἐκ πηλοῦ διήρτισαι σὺ ὡς καὶ ἐγώ,
ἐκ τοῦ αὐτοῦ διηρτίσμεθα.
 You are formed out of the clay as also I:
we have been formed out of the same [substance].
 Behold, I am toward God as you are;
I too was formed from a piece of clay.
הֵן־אֲנִי כְפִיךָ לָאֵל מֵחֹמֶר קֹרַצְתִּי גַם־אָנִי׃ 6
7οὐχ ὁ φόβος μού σε στροβήσει,
οὐδὲ ἡ χείρ μου βαρεῖα ἔσται ἐπὶ σοί.
 My fear shall not terrify you,
neither shall my hand be heavy upon you.
 Behold, no fear of me need terrify you;
my pressure will not be heavy upon you.
הִנֵּה אֵמָתִי לֹא תְבַעֲתֶךָּ וְאַכְפִּי עָלֶיךָ לֹא־יִכְבָּד׃ 7
8πλὴν εἶπας ἐν ὠσίν μου,
φωνὴν ῥημάτων σου ἀκήκοα·
 But you have said in mine ears, (I have heard the voice of your words;)
because you say, I am pure, not having sinned;
 "Surely, you have spoken in my hearing,
and I have heard the sound of your words.
אַךְ אָמַרְתָּ בְאָזְנָי וְקֹול מִלִּין אֶשְׁמָע׃ 8
9διότι λέγεις Καθαρός εἰμι οὐχ ἁμαρτών,
ἄμεμπτος δέ εἰμι, οὐ γὰρ ἠνόμησα·
 I am blameless,
for I have not transgressed.
 You say, 'I am clean, without transgression;
I am pure, and there is no iniquity in me.
זַךְ אֲנִי בְּלִי פָשַׁע חַף אָנֹכִי וְלֹא עָוֹן לִי׃ 9
10μέμψιν δὲ κατ' ἐμοῦ εὗρεν,
ἥγηται δέ με ὥσπερ ὑπεναντίον·
 Yet he has discovered a charge against me,
and he has reckoned me as an adversary.
 Behold, he finds occasions against me,
he counts me as his enemy;
הֵן תְּנוּאֹות עָלַי יִמְצָא יַחְשְׁבֵנִי לְאֹויֵב לֹו׃ 10
11ἔθετο δὲ ἐν ξύλῳ τὸν πόδα μου,
ἐφύλαξεν δέ μου πάσας τὰς ὁδούς.
 And he has put my foot in the stocks,
and has watched all my ways.
 he puts my feet in the stocks,
and watches all my paths.'
יָשֵׂם בַּסַּד רַגְלָי יִשְׁמֹר כָּל־אָרְחֹתָי׃ 11
12πῶς γὰρ λέγεις Δίκαιός εἰμι, καὶ οὐκ ἐπακήκοέν μου;
αἰώνιος γάρ ἐστιν ὁ ἐπάνω βροτῶν.
 For how say you, I am righteous,
yet he has not listened to me?
for he that is above mortals is eternal.
 "Behold, in this you are not right.
I will answer you. God is greater than man.
הֶן־זֹאת לֹא־צָדַקְתָּ אֶעֱנֶךָּ כִּי־יִרְבֶּה אֱלֹוהַ מֵאֱנֹושׁ׃ 12
13λέγεις δέ Διὰ τί τῆς δίκης μου οὐκ ἐπακήκοεν πᾶν ῥῆμα;
 But you say,
Why has he not heard every word of my cause?
 Why do you contend against him,
saying, 'He will answer none of my words'?
מַדּוּעַ אֵלָיו רִיבֹותָ כִּי כָל־דְּבָרָיו לֹא־יַעֲנֶה׃ 13
14ἐν γὰρ τῷ ἅπαξ λαλήσαι ὁ κύριος,
ἐν δὲ τῷ δευτέρῳ·
 For when the Lord speaks once,
or a second time,
 For God speaks in one way,
and in two, though man does not perceive it.
כִּי־בְאַחַת יְדַבֶּר־אֵל וּבִשְׁתַּיִם לֹא יְשׁוּרֶנָּה׃ 14
15ἐνύπνιον, ἢ ἐν μελέτῃ νυκτερινῇ,
ὡς ὅταν ἐπιπίπτῃ δεινὸς φόβος ἐπ' ἀνθρώπους ἐπὶ νυσταγμάτων ἐπὶ κοίτης·
 [sending] a dream, or in the meditation of the night;
(as when a dreadful alarm happens to fall upon men, in slumberings on the bed:)
 In a dream, in a vision of the night,
when deep sleep falls upon men,
while they slumber on their beds,
בַּחֲלֹום חֶזְיֹון לַיְלָה בִּנְפֹל תַּרְדֵּמָה עַל־אֲנָשִׁים בִּתְנוּמֹות עֲלֵי מִשְׁכָּב׃ 15
16τότε ἀνακαλύπτει νοῦν ἀνθρώπων,
ἐν εἴδεσιν φόβου τοιούτοις αὐτοὺς ἐξεφόβησεν
 then opens he the understanding of men:
he scares them with such fearful visions:
 then he opens the ears of men,
and terrifies them with warnings,
אָז יִגְלֶה אֹזֶן אֲנָשִׁים וּבְמֹסָרָם יַחְתֹּם׃ 16
17ἀποστρέψαι ἄνθρωπον ἐξ ἀδικίας,
τὸ δὲ σῶμα αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ πτώματος ἐρρύσατο.
 to turn a man from unrighteousness,
and he delivers his body from a fall.
 that he may turn man aside from his deed,
and cut off pride from man;
לְהָסִיר אָדָם מַעֲשֶׂה וְגֵוָה מִגֶּבֶר יְכַסֶּה׃ 17
18ἐφείσατο δὲ τῆς ψυχῆς αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ θανάτου,
καὶ μὴ πεσεῖν αὐτὸν ἐν πολέμῳ.
 He spares also his soul from death,
and [suffers] him not to fall in war.
 he keeps back his soul from the Pit,
his life from perishing by the sword.
יַחְשֹׂךְ נַפְשֹׁו מִנִּי־שָׁחַת וְחַיָּתֹו מֵעֲבֹר בַּשָּׁלַח׃ 18
19πάλιν δὲ ἤλεγξεν αὐτὸν ἐν μαλακίᾳ ἐπὶ κοίτης,
καὶ πλῆθος ὀστῶν αὐτοῦ ἐνάρκησεν,
 And again, he chastens him with sickness on his bed,
and the multitude of his bones is benumbed.
 "Man is also chastened with pain upon his bed,
and with continual strife in his bones;
וְהוּכַח בְּמַכְאֹוב עַל־מִשְׁכָּבֹו [כ= וְרִיב] [ק= וְרֹוב] עֲצָמָיו אֵתָן׃ 19
20πᾶν δὲ βρωτὸν σίτου οὐ μὴ δύνηται προσδέξασθαι,
καὶ ἡ ψυχὴ αὐτοῦ βρῶσιν ἐπιθυμήσει,
 And he shall not be able to take any food,
though his soul shall desire meat;
 so that his life loathes bread,
and his appetite dainty food.
וְזִהֲמַתּוּ חַיָּתֹו לָחֶם וְנַפְשֹׁו מַאֲכַל תַּאֲוָה׃ 20
21ἕως ἂν σαπῶσιν αὐτοῦ αἱ σάρκες καὶ ἀποδείξῃ τὰ ὀστᾶ αὐτοῦ κενά·
 until his flesh shall be consumed,
and he shall shew his bones bare.
 His flesh is so wasted away that it cannot be seen;
and his bones which were not seen stick out.
יִכֶל בְּשָׂרֹו מֵרֹאִי [כ= וּשְׁפִי] [ק= וְשֻׁפּוּ] עַצְמֹותָיו לֹא רֻאוּ׃ 21
22ἤγγισεν δὲ εἰς θάνατον ἡ ψυχὴ αὐτοῦ,
ἡ δὲ ζωὴ αὐτοῦ ἐν ᾅδῃ.
 His soul also draws nigh to death,
and his life is in Hades.
 His soul draws near the Pit,
and his life to those who bring death.
וַתִּקְרַב לַשַּׁחַת נַפְשֹׁו וְחַיָּתֹו לַמְמִתִים׃ 22
23ἐὰν ὦσιν χίλιοι ἄγγελοι θανατηφόροι, εἷς αὐτῶν οὐ μὴ τρώσῃ αὐτόν·
ἐὰν νοήσῃ τῇ καρδίᾳ ἐπιστραφῆναι ἐπὶ Κύριον,
ἀναγγείλῃ δὲ ἀνθρώπῳ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ μέμψιν,
τὴν δὲ ἄνοιαν αὐτοῦ δείξῃ,
 Though there should be a thousand messengers of death,
not one of them shall wound him:
if he should purpose in his heart to turn to the Lord,
and declare to man his fault, and shew his folly;
 If there be for him an angel,
a mediator, one of the thousand,
to declare to man what is right for him;
אִם־יֵשׁ עָלָיו מַלְאָךְ מֵלִיץ אֶחָד מִנִּי־אָלֶף
לְהַגִּיד לְאָדָם יָשְׁרֹו׃ 		23
24ἀνθέξεται τοῦ μὴ πεσεῖν αὐτὸν εἰς θάνατον,
ἀνανεώσει δὲ αὐτοῦ τὸ σῶμα ὥσπερ ἀλοιφὴν ἐπὶ τοίχου,
τὰ δὲ ὀστᾶ αὐτοῦ ἐμπλήσει μυελοῦ·
 he will support him, that he should not perish,
and will restore his body as [fresh] plaster upon a wall;
and he will fill his bones with morrow.
 and he is gracious to him, and says,
'Deliver him from going down into the Pit,
I have found a ransom;
וַיְחֻנֶּנּוּ וַיֹּאמֶר פְּדָעֵהוּ מֵרֶדֶת שָׁחַת מָצָאתִי כֹפֶר׃ 24
25ἁπαλυνεῖ δὲ αὐτοῦ τὰς σάρκας ὥσπερ νηπίου,
ἀποκαταστήσει δὲ αὐτὸν ἀνδρωθέντα ἐν ἀνθρώποις.
 And he will make his flesh tender as that of a babe,
and he will restore him among men in [his] full strength.
 let his flesh become fresh with youth;
let him return to the days of his youthful vigor';
רֻטֲפַשׁ בְּשָׂרֹו מִנֹּעַר יָשׁוּב לִימֵי עֲלוּמָיו׃ 25
26εὐξάμενος δὲ πρὸς Κύριον, καὶ δεκτὰ αὐτῷ ἔσται,
εἰσελεύσεται δὲ προσώπῳ καθαρῷ σὺν ἐξηγορίᾳ·
ἀποδώσει δὲ ἀνθρώποις δικαιοσύνην.
 And he shall pray to the Lord,
and his prayer shall be accepted of him;
he shall enter with a cheerful countenance,
with a full expression [of praise]:
for he will render to men [their] due.
 then man prays to God, and he accepts him,
he comes into his presence with joy.
He recounts to men his salvation,
יֶעְתַּר אֶל־אֱלֹוהַּ וַיִּרְצֵהוּ וַיַּרְא פָּנָיו בִּתְרוּעָה
וַיָּשֶׁב לֶאֱנֹושׁ צִדְקָתֹו׃ 		26
27εἶτα τότε ἀπομέμψεται ἄνθρωπος αὐτὸς ἑαυτῷ λέγων Οἷα συνετέλουν,
καὶ οὐκ ἄξια ἤτασέν με ὧν ἥμαρτον.
 Even then a man shall blame himself,
saying, What kind of things have I done?
and he has not punished me according to the full amount of my sins.
 and he sings before men, and says:
'I sinned and perverted what was right,
and it was not requited to me.
יָשֹׁר עַל־אֲנָשִׁים וַיֹּאמֶר חָטָאתִי וְיָשָׁר הֶעֱוֵיתִי וְלֹא־שָׁוָה לִי׃ 27
28σῶσον ψυχήν μου τοῦ μὴ ἐλθεῖν εἰς διαφθοράν,
καὶ ἡ ζωή μου φῶς ὄψεται.
 Deliver my soul, that it may not go to destruction,
and my life shall see the light.
 He has redeemed my soul from going down into the Pit,
and my life shall see the light.'
פָּדָה [כ= נַפְשִׁי] [ק= נַפְשֹׁו] מֵעֲבֹר בַּשָּׁחַת [כ= וְחַיָּתִי] [ק= וְחַיָּתֹו] בָּאֹור תִּרְאֶה׃ 28
29ἰδοὺ πάντα ταῦτα ἐργᾶται ὁ ἰσχυρὸς
ὁδοὺς τρεῖς μετὰ ἀνδρός.
 Behold, all these things,
the Mighty One works in a threefold manner with a man.
 "Behold, God does all these things, twice, three times, with a man,
הֶן־כָּל־אֵלֶּה יִפְעַל־אֵל פַּעֲמַיִם שָׁלֹושׁ עִם־גָּבֶר׃ 29
30ἀλλ' ἐρρύσατο τὴν ψυχήν μου ἐκ θανάτου,
ἵνα ἡ ζωή μου ἐν φωτὶ αἰνῇ αὐτόν.
 And he has delivered my soul from death,
that my life may praise him in the light.
 to bring back his soul from the Pit,
that he may see the light of life.
לְהָשִׁיב נַפְשֹׁו מִנִּי־שָׁחַת לֵאֹור בְּאֹור הַחַיִּים׃ 30
31ἐνωτίζου, Ιωβ, καὶ ἄκουέ μου·
κώφευσον, καὶ ἐγώ εἰμι λαλήσω.
 Listen, Job, and hear me:
be silent, and I will speak.
 Give heed, O Job, listen to me;
be silent, and I will speak.
הַקְשֵׁב אִיֹּוב שְׁמַע־לִי הַחֲרֵשׁ וְאָנֹכִי אֲדַבֵּר׃ 31
32εἰ εἰσὶν λόγοι, ἀποκρίθητί μοι·
λάλησον, θέλω γὰρ δικαιωθῆναί σε.
 If you have words, answer me:
speak, for I desire you to be justified.
 If you have anything to say, answer me;
speak, for I desire to justify you.
אִם־יֵשׁ־מִלִּין הֲשִׁיבֵנִי דַּבֵּר כִּי־חָפַצְתִּי צַדְּקֶךָּ׃ 32
33εἰ μή, σὺ ἄκουσόν μου·
κώφευσον, καὶ διδάξω σε σοφίαν.
 If not, do you hear me:
be silent, and I will teach you.
 If not, listen to me;
be silent, and I will teach you wisdom."		אִם־אַיִן אַתָּה שְׁמַע־לִי הַחֲרֵשׁ וַאֲאַלֶּפְךָ חָכְמָה׃ ס 33
