21ΙΩΒBrenton(Lxx)JOB Revised Standard VersionJOB 21

But Job answered and said,
Job. Jb.21.1-34Then Job answered:
Listen, hear you my words,
that I may not have this consolation from you.
 "Listen carefully to my words,
and let this be your consolation.
Raise me, and I will speak;
then you shall not laugh me to scorn.
 Bear with me, and I will speak,
and after I have spoken, mock on.
4τί γάρ; μὴ ἀνθρώπου μου ἡ ἔλεγξις;
ἢ διὰ τί οὐ θυμωθήσομαι;
What! is my reproof of man?
and why should I not be angry?
 As for me, is my complaint against man?
Why should I not be impatient?
Look upon me, and wonder,
laying your hand upon your cheek.
 Look at me, and be appalled,
and lay your hand upon your mouth.
For even when I remember, I am alarmed,
and pains seize my flesh.
 When I think of it I am dismayed,
and shuddering seizes my flesh.
πεπαλαίωνται δὲ καὶ ἐν πλούτῳ;
Why do the ungodly live,
and grow old even in wealth?
 Why do the wicked live,
reach old age, and grow mighty in power?
Their seed is according to [their] desire,
and their children are in [their] sight.
 Their children are established in their presence,
and their offspring before their eyes.
Their houses are prosperous,
neither [have they] any where [cause for] fear,
neither is there a scourge from the Lord upon them.
 Their houses are safe from fear,
and no rod of God is upon them.
Their cow does not cast her calf,
and their [beast] with young is safe,
and does not miscarry.
 Their bull breeds without fail;
their cow calves, and does not cast her calf.
And they remain as an unfailing flock,
and their children play before [them],
 They send forth their little ones like a flock,
and their children dance.
taking up the psaltery and harp;
and they rejoice at the voice of a song.
 They sing to the tambourine and the lyre,
and rejoice to the sound of the pipe.
And they spend their days in wealth,
and fall asleep in the rest of the grave.
 They spend their days in prosperity,
and in peace they go down to Sheol.
Yet [such a man] says to the Lord, Depart from me;
I desire not to know your ways.
 They say to God, 'Depart from us!
We do not desire the knowledge of thy ways.
15τί Ἱκανός, ὅτι δουλεύσομεν αὐτῷ;
καὶ τίς ὠφέλεια, ὅτι ἀπαντήσομεν αὐτῷ;
What is the Mighty One,
that we should serve him?
and what profit is there that we should approach him?
 What is the Almighty, that we should serve him?
And what profit do we get if we pray to him?'
For their good things were in [their] hands,
but he regards not the works of the ungodly.
 Behold, is not their prosperity in their hand?
The counsel of the wicked is far from me.
Nevertheless, the lamp of the ungodly also shall be put out,
and destruction shall come upon them,
and pangs of vengeance shall seize them.
 "How often is it that the lamp of the wicked is put out?
That their calamity comes upon them?
That God distributes pains in his anger?
And they shall be as chaff before the wind,
or as dust which the storm has taken up.
 That they are like straw before the wind,
and like chaff that the storm carries away?
Let his substance fail [to supply] his children:
[God] shall recompense him,
and he shall know it.
 You say, 'God stores up their iniquity for their sons.'
Let him recompense it to themselves, that they may know it.
Let his eyes see his own destruction,
and let him not be saved by the Lord.
 Let their own eyes see their destruction,
and let them drink of the wrath of the Almighty.
21ὅτι τί θέλημα αὐτοῦ ἐν οἴκῳ αὐτοῦ μετ' αὐτόν;
For his desire is in his house with him,
and the number of his months has been suddenly cut off.
 For what do they care for their houses after them,
when the number of their months is cut off?
22πότερον οὐχὶ ὁ κύριός ἐστιν ὁ διδάσκων σύνεσιν καὶ ἐπιστήμην;
Is it not the Lord who teaches understanding and knowledge?
and does not he judge murders?
 Will any teach God knowledge,
seeing that he judges those that are on high?
One shall die in his perfect strength,
and wholly at ease and prosperous;
 One dies in full prosperity,
being wholly at ease and secure,
and his inwards are full of fat,
and his marrow is diffused [throughout him].
 his body full of fat
and the marrow of his bones moist.
And another dies in bitterness of soul,
not eating any good thing.
 Another dies in bitterness of soul,
never having tasted of good.
But they lie down in the earth together,
and corruption covers them.
 They lie down alike in the dust,
and the worms cover them.
So I know you,
that you presumptuously attack me:
 "Behold, I know your thoughts,
and your schemes to wrong me.
28ὅτι ἐρεῖτε Ποῦ ἐστιν οἶκος ἄρχοντος;
καὶ ποῦ ἐστιν ἡ σκέπη τῶν σκηνωμάτων τῶν ἀσεβῶν;
so that you will say, Where is the house of the prince?
and where is the covering of the tabernacles of the ungodly?
 For you say, 'Where is the house of the prince?
Where is the tent in which the wicked dwelt?'
Ask those that go by the way,
and do not disown their tokens.
 Have you not asked those who travel the roads,
and do you not accept their testimony
For the wicked hastens to the day of destruction:
they shall be led away for the day of his vengeance.
 that the wicked man is spared in the day of calamity,
that he is rescued in the day of wrath?
31τίς ἀπαγγελεῖ ἐπὶ προσώπου αὐτοῦ τὴν ὁδὸν αὐτοῦ;
καὶ αὐτὸς ἐποίησεν, τίς ἀνταποδώσει αὐτῷ;
Who will tell him his way to his face, whereas he has done [it]?
who shall recompense him?
 Who declares his way to his face,
and who requites him for what he has done?
And he has been led away to the tombs,
and he has watched over the heaps.
 When he is borne to the grave,
watch is kept over his tomb.
The stones of the valley have been sweet to him,
and every man shall depart after him,
and [there are] innumerable [ones] before him.
 The clods of the valley are sweet to him;
all men follow after him,
and those who go before him are innumerable.
34πῶς δὲ παρακαλεῖτέ με κενά;
How then do you comfort me in vain?
whereas I have no rest from your molestation.
 How then will you comfort me with empty nothings?
There is nothing left of your answers but falsehood."
