Then Sophar the Minaean answered and said, | Zophar. Jb.20.1-29 | Then Zophar the Na'amathite answered: |
I did not suppose that you would answer thus: neither do you understand more than I. | "Therefore my thoughts answer me, because of my haste within me.
I will hear my shameful reproach; and the spirit of my understanding answers me. | I hear censure which insults me, and out of my understanding a spirit answers me.
Have you [not] known these things of old, from the time that man was set upon the earth? | Do you not know this from of old, since man was placed upon earth, | הֲזֹאת יָדַעְתָּ מִנִּי־עַד מִנִּי שִׂים אָדָם עֲלֵי־אָרֶץ׃ | 4
But the mirth of the ungodly is a signal downfall, and the joy of transgressors is destruction: | that the exulting of the wicked is short, and the joy of the godless but for a moment?
although his gifts should go up to heaven, and his sacrifice reach the clouds. | Though his height mount up to the heavens, and his head reach to the clouds, | אִם־יַעֲלֶה לַשָּׁמַיִם שִׂיאֹו וְרֹאשֹׁו לָעָב יַגִּיעַ׃ | 6
For when he shall seem to be now established, then he shall utterly perish: and they that knew him shall say, Where is he? | he will perish for ever like his own dung; those who have seen him will say, 'Where is he?'
Like a dream that has fled away, he shall not be found; and he has fled like a vision of the night. | He will fly away like a dream, and not be found; he will be chased away like a vision of the night.
The eye has looked upon him, but shall not [see him] again; and his place shall no longer perceive him. | The eye which saw him will see him no more, nor will his place any more behold him.
Let [his] inferiors destroy his children, and let his hands kindle the fire of sorrow. | His children will seek the favor of the poor, and his hands will give back his wealth.
His bones have been filled with [vigour of] his youth, and it shall lie down with him in the dust. | His bones are full of youthful vigor, but it will lie down with him in the dust.
Though evil be sweet in his mouth, [though] he will hide it under his tongue; | "Though wickedness is sweet in his mouth, though he hides it under his tongue, | אִם־תַּמְתִּיק בְּפִיו רָעָה יַכְחִידֶנָּה תַּחַת לְשֹׁונֹו׃ | 12
though he will not spare it, and will not leave it, but will keep it in the midst of his throat: | though he is loath to let it go, and holds it in his mouth, | יַחְמֹל עָלֶיהָ וְלֹא יַעַזְבֶנָּה וְיִמְנָעֶנָּה בְּתֹוךְ חִכֹּו׃ | 13
yet he shall not at all be able to help himself; the gall of an asp is in his belly. | yet his food is turned in his stomach; it is the gall of asps within him.
[His] wealth unjustly collected shall be vomited up; a messenger [of] [wrath] shall drag him out of his house. | He swallows down riches and vomits them up again; God casts them out of his belly.
And let him suck the poison of serpents, and let the serpent's tongue slay him. | He will suck the poison of asps; the tongue of a viper will kill him.
Let him not see the milk of the pastures, nor the supplies of honey and butter. | He will not look upon the rivers, the streams flowing with honey and curds.
He has laboured unprofitably and in vain, [for] wealth of which he shall not taste: [it is] as a lean thing, unfit for food, which he cannot swallow. | He will give back the fruit of his toil, and will not swallow it down; from the profit of his trading he will get no enjoyment.
For he has broken down the houses of many mighty men: and he has plundered an habitation, though he built [it] not. | For he has crushed and abandoned the poor, he has seized a house which he did not build.
There is no security to his possessions; he shall not be saved by his desire. | "Because his greed knew no rest, he will not save anything in which he delights.
There is nothing remaining of his provisions; therefore his goods shall not flourish. | There was nothing left after he had eaten; therefore his prosperity will not endure.
But when he shall seem to be just satisfied, he shall be straitened; and all distress shall come upon him. | In the fulness of his sufficiency he will be in straits; all the force of misery will come upon him.
If by any means he would fill his belly, let [God] send upon him the fury of wrath; let him bring a torrent of pains upon him. | To fill his belly to the full God will send his fierce anger into him, and rain it upon him as his food.
And he shall by no means escape from the power of the sword; let the brazen bow wound him. | He will flee from an iron weapon; a bronze arrow will strike him through.
And let the arrow pierce through his body; and let the stars be against his dwelling-place: let terrors come upon him. | It is drawn forth and comes out of his body, the glittering point comes out of his gall; terrors come upon him.
And let all darkness wait for him: a fire that burns not out shall consume him; and let a stranger plague his house. | Utter darkness is laid up for his treasures; a fire not blown upon will devour him; what is left in his tent will be consumed.
And let the heaven reveal his iniquities, and the earth rise up against him. | The heavens will reveal his iniquity, and the earth will rise up against him.
Let destruction bring his house to an end; let a day of wrath come upon him. | The possessions of his house will be carried away, dragged off in the day of God's wrath.
This is the portion of an ungodly man from the Lord, and the possession of his goods [appointed him] by the all-seeing [God]. | This is the wicked man's portion from God, the heritage decreed for him by God."
