New Testament in Greek (UBS.Ed.26) |
32 | WHEN THEY REACHED a place called Gethsemane, he said to his disciples, 'Sit here while I pray.' | The Prayer in Gethsemane Mk.14.32-42 (Gethsemane) | Mt.26.36-46 | Lk.22.39-46 | Καὶ ἐρχονται εἰς χωρίον οὗ τὸ ὀνομα Γεθσημανί, καὶ λέγει τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ, Καθίσατε ὧδε ἑως προσεύξωμαι. |
33 | And he took Peter and James and John with him. Horror and dismay came over him, | | καὶ παραλαμβάνει τὸν Πέτρον καὶ τὸν Ἰάκωβον καὶ τὸν Ἰωάννην μετ' αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἠρξατο ἐκθαμβεῖσθαι καὶ ἀδημονεῖν, |
34 | and he said to them, 'My heart is ready to break with grief; stop here, and stay awake.' |
35 | Then he went forward a little, threw himself on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, this hour might pass him by.
36 | 'Abba, Father,' he said, 'all things are possible to thee; take this cup away from me. Yet not what I will, but what thou wilt.'
37 | He came back and found them asleep; and he said to Peter, 'Asleep, Simon? Were you not able to keep awake for one hour?
38 | Stay awake, all of you; and pray that you may be spared the test: the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.' |
39 | Once more he went away and prayed. Some witnesses add: using the same words. |
40 | On his return he found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know how to answer him.
41 | The third time he came and said to them, 'Still sleeping? Still taking your ease? Enough! The Greek is obscure; a possible meaning is: 'The money has been paid', 'The account is settled.' The hour has come. The Son of Man is betrayed to sinful men. |
42 | Up, let us go forward! My betrayer is upon us.'
