 New English Bible Matthew:16Novum Testamentum Graece (UBS.Ed.26)

The Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. The Demand for a Sign Mt.16.1-4 (Gennesaret) - | Mk.8.11-13 | Lk.12.54-56Kαὶ προσελθόντες οἱ Φαρισαῖοι καὶ Σαδδουκαῖοι πειράζοντες ἐπηρώτησαν αὐτὸν σημεῖον ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἐπιδεῖξαι αὐτοῖς.
His answer was: [Some manuscripts here insert 'In the evening you say, "It will be fine weather, for the sky is red";  ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, [Ὀψίας γενομένης λέγετε, Εὐδία, πυρράζει γὰρ ὁ οὐρανός·
"and in the morning you say, "It will be stormy today; the sky is red and lowering." You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky; can you not interpret the signs of the times?']
'It is a wicked generation that asks for a sign; and the only sign that will be given it is the sign of Jonah.' So they went off and left them.
In crossing to the other side the disciples had forgotten to take bread with them. The Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees Mt.16.5-12 (Gennesaret) - | Mk.8.14-21Καὶ ἐλθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ εἰς τὸ πέραν ἐπελάθοντο ἀρτους λαβεῖν.
So, when Jesus said to them, 'Beware, be on your guard against the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees',  ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Ὁρᾶτε καὶ προσέχετε ἀπὸ τῆς ζύμης τῶν Φαρισαίων καὶ Σαδδουκαίων.
they began to say among themselves, 'It is because we have brought no bread!'
Knowing what was in their minds, Jesus said to them: 'Why do you talk about bringing no bread? Where is your faith?  γνοὺς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν, Τί διαλογίζεσθε ἐν ἑαυτοῖς, ὀλιγόπιστοι, ὅτι ἀρτους οὐκ ἐχετὲ;
Do you not understand even yet? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you picked up?  οὐπω νοεῖτε, οὐδὲ μνημονεύετε τοὺς πέντε ἀρτους τῶν πεντακισχιλίων καὶ πόσους κοφίνους ἐλάβετὲ;
Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you picked up?  οὐδὲ τοὺς ἑπτὰ ἀρτους τῶν τετρακισχιλίων καὶ πόσας σπυρίδας ἐλάβετὲ;
How can you fail to see that I was not speaking about bread? Be on your guard, I said, against the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.'
Then they understood: they were to be on their guard, not against baker's leaven, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
WHEN HE CAME to the territory of Caesarea Philippi, Jesus asked his disciples, 'Who do men say that the Son of Man is?' [Some witnesses read: that I, the Son of Man, am.] Peter's Declaration about Jesus Mt.16.13-20 (Caesarea Philippi) - | Mk.8.27-30 | Lk.9.18-21Ἐλθὼν δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὰ μέρη Καισαρείας τῆς Φιλίππου ἠρώτα τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ λέγων, Τίνα λέγουσιν οἱ ἄνθρωποι εἶναι τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώποὺ;
They answered, 'Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, others Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.'
'And you,' he asked, 'who do you say I am?'  λέγει αὐτοῖς, Ὑμεῖς δὲ τίνα με λέγετε εἶναὶ;
Simon Peter answered: 'You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.'
Then Jesus said: 'Simon son of Jonah, you are favoured indeed! You did not learn that from mortal man; it was revealed to you by my heavenly Father.
And I say this to you: You are Peter, the Rock; and on this rock I will build my church, and the forces of death shall never conquer it. [Or: the gates of death shall never close upon it.]
I will give you the keys of the kingdom of Heaven; what you forbid on earth shall be forbidden in heaven, and what you allow on earth shall be allowed in heaven.'
He then gave his disciples strict orders not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.
From that time Jesus began to make it clear to his disciples that he had to go to Jerusalem, and there to suffer much from the elders, chief priests, and lawyers; to be put to death and to be raised again on the third day. Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection Mt.16.21-28 | Mk.8.31-9.1 | Lk.9.22-27Ἀπὸ τότε ἠρξατο ὁ Ἰησοῦς δεικνύειν τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ ὅτι δεῖ αὐτὸν εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα ἀπελθεῖν καὶ πολλὰ παθεῖν ἀπὸ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων καὶ ἀρχιερέων καὶ γραμματέων καὶ ἀποκτανθῆναι καὶ τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ ἐγερθῆναι.
At this Peter took him by the arm and began to rebuke him: 'Heaven forbid!' he said. 'No, Lord, this shall never happen to you.'
Then Jesus turned and said to Peter, 'Away with you, Satan; you are a stumbling-block to me. You think as men think, not as God thinks.'
Jesus then said to his disciples, 'If anyone wishes to be a follower of mine, he must leave self behind; he must take up his cross and come with me.
Whoever cares for his own safety is lost; but if a man will let himself be lost for my sake, he will find his true self.
What will a man gain by winning the whole world, at the cost of his true self? Or what can he give that will buy that self back?  τί γὰρ ὠφεληθήσεται ἄνθρωπος ἐὰν τὸν κόσμον ὁλον κερδήσῃ τὴν δὲ ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ζημιωθῇ; ἢ τί δώσει ἄνθρωπος ἀντάλλαγμα τῆς ψυχῆς αὐτοῦ;
For the Son of Man is to come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will give each man the due reward for what he has done.
I tell you this: there are some standing here who will not taste death before they have seen the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.'
