katapi HOME The Soldiers Mock Jesus - Mt.27.27-31  Mk.15.16-20  Jn.19.2-3     | NEB Books | notes

Matthew: 27
27PILATE'S SOLDIERS then took Jesus into the Governor's headquarters, where they collected the whole company round him. 28First they stripped him and dressed him in a scarlet mantle; 29and plaiting a crown of thorns they placed it on his head, with a cane in his right hand. Falling on their knees before him they jeered at him: 'Hail, King of the Jews!' 30They spat on him, and used the cane to beat him about the head. 31Finally, when the mockery was over, they took off the mantle and dressed him in his own clothes.

Then they led him away to be crucified.

Mark: 15
16Then the soldiers took him inside the courtyard (the Governor's headquarters [Greek: praetorium.]) and called together the whole company. 17They dressed him in purple, and having plaited a crown of thorns, placed it on his head. 18Then they began to salute him with, 'Hail, is King of the Jews!' 19They beat him about the head with a cane and spat upon him, and then knelt and paid mock homage to him. 20When they had finished their mockery, they stripped him of the purple and dressed him in his own clothes.

John: 19
2and the soldiers plaited a crown of thorns and placed it on his head, and robed him in a purple cloak. 3Then time after time they came up to him, crying, 'Hail, King of the Jews!', and struck him on the face.

Notes: The most generally known harmonies of the Gospels are based upon the Huck-Lietzmann Synopsis (1936) of the three gospels and Sparks' Synopsis (1964) of four gospels. Many of the passages in these harmonies are too short to display in a useful manner on a web-page.
The katapi New Study Bible Synopsis of the Gospels is based upon the headings displayed in the New Study Bible reference table which in turn follows the headings printed in the United Bible Societies' New Testament in Greek. These sections are more useful for bible study. Columns are arranged so that the first column is your chosen heading from the bible passage list (highlighted). The harmonies that follow across the web-page are then in the normally accepted order.
For Old Testament references quoted by New Testament authors, you should either go back to the passage listing web-page and select the link on the 'version' column; or click on the column heading and search through the chapter for the relevant passage; than select the OT passage from the reference column.
