23 ΚΑΤΑ ΜΑΘΘΑΙΟΝ Matthew Reference
1Τότε ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐλάλησεν τοῖς ὀχλοις καὶ τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ JESUS THEN ADDRESSED the people and his disciples in these words:The Denouncing of the Scribes and Pharisees Mt.23.1-36 | Mk.12.38-40 | Lk.11.37-52 | Lk.20.45-47
2λέγων, Ἐπὶ τῆς Μωϋσέως καθέδρας ἐκάθισαν οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι. 'The doctors of the law and the Pharisees sit in the chair of Moses; 
3πάντα οὖν ὁσα ἐὰν εἰπωσιν ὑμῖν ποιήσατε καὶ τηρεῖτε, κατὰ δὲ τὰ ἐργα αὐτῶν μὴ ποιεῖτε· λέγουσιν γὰρ καὶ οὐ ποιοῦσιν. therefore do what they tell you; pay attention to their words. But do not follow their practice; for they say one thing and do another. 
4δεσμεύουσιν δὲ φορτία βαρέα [καὶ δυσβάστακτα] καὶ ἐπιτιθέασιν ἐπὶ τοὺς ὠμους τῶν ἀνθρώπων, αὐτοὶ δὲ τῷ δακτύλῳ αὐτῶν οὐ θέλουσιν κινῆσαι αὐτά. They make up heavy packs and pile them on men's shoulders, but will not raise a finger to lift the load themselves. 
5πάντα δὲ τὰ ἐργα αὐτῶν ποιοῦσιν πρὸς τὸ θεαθῆναι τοῖς ἀνθρώποις· πλατύνουσιν γὰρ τὰ φυλακτήρια αὐτῶν καὶ μεγαλύνουσιν τὰ κράσπεδα, Whatever they do is done for show. They go about with broad phylacteries " [See Deuteronomy 6. 8-9 and Exodus 13.9.] and wear deep fringes on their robes; 
6φιλοῦσιν δὲ τὴν πρωτοκλισίαν ἐν τοῖς δείπνοις καὶ τὰς πρωτοκαθεδρίας ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς they like to have places of honour at feasts and the chief seats in synagogues, 
7καὶ τοὺς ἀσπασμοὺς ἐν ταῖς ἀγοραῖς καὶ καλεῖσθαι ὑπὸ τῶν ἀνθρώπων, Ῥαββί. to be greeted respectfully in the street, and to be addressed as "rabbi".
 
8ὑμεῖς δὲ μὴ κληθῆτε, Ῥαββί, εἷς γάρ ἐστιν ὑμῶν ὁ διδάσκαλος, πάντες δὲ ὑμεῖς ἀδελφοί ἐστε. 'But you must not be called "rabbi"; for you have one Rabbi, and you are all brothers. 
9καὶ πατέρα μὴ καλέσητε ὑμῶν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, εἷς γάρ ἐστιν ὑμῶν ὁ πατὴρ ὁ οὐράνιος. Do not call any man on earth "father"; for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. 
10μηδὲ κληθῆτε καθηγηταί, ὅτι καθηγητὴς ὑμῶν ἐστιν εἷς ὁ Χριστός. Nor must you be called "teacher"; you have one Teacher, the Messiah. 
11ὁ δὲ μείζων ὑμῶν ἐσται ὑμῶν διάκονος. The greatest among you must be your servant. 
12ὁστις δὲ ὑψώσει ἑαυτὸν ταπεινωθήσεται, καὶ ὁστις ταπεινώσει ἑαυτὸν ὑψωθήσεται. For whoever exalts himself will be humbled; and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
 
13Οὐαὶ δὲ ὑμῖν, γραμματεῖς καὶ Φαρισαῖοι ὑποκριταί, ὅτι κλείετε τὴν βασιλείαν τῶν οὐρανῶν ἐμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων· ὑμεῖς γὰρ οὐκ εἰσέρχεσθε, οὐδὲ τοὺς εἰσερχομένους ἀφίετ ε εἰσελθεῖν. 'Alas, alas for you, lawyers and Pharisees, hypocrites that you are! You shut the door of the kingdom of Heaven in men's faces; you do not enter yourselves, and when others are entering, you stop them. 
14Οὐαὶ δὲ ὑμῖν, γραμματεῖς καὶ Φαρισαῖοι ὑποκριταί, ὅτι κατεσθίετε τὰς οἰκίας τῶν χηρῶν καὶ προφάσει μακρὰ προσευχόμενοι· διὰ τοῦτο λήμψεσθε περισσότερον κρίμα. [Some manuscripts add: Alas for you, lawyers and Pharisees, hypocrites! You eat up the property of widows, while you say long prayers for appearance' sake. You will receive the severest sentence.]
 
15Οὐαὶ ὑμῖν, γραμματεῖς καὶ Φαρισαῖοι ὑποκριταί, ὅτι περιάγετε τὴν θάλασσαν καὶ τὴν ξηρὰν ποιῆσαι ἑνα προσήλυτον, καὶ ὁταν γένηται ποιεῖτε αὐτὸν υἱὸν γεέννης διπλότερον ὑμῶν. 'Alas for you, lawyers and Pharisees, hypocrites! You travel over sea and land to win one convert; and when you have won him you make him twice as fit for hell as you are yourselves.
 
16Οὐαὶ ὑμῖν, ὁδηγοὶ τυφλοὶ οἱ λέγοντες, Ὃς ἂν ὀμόσῃ ἐν τῷ ναῷ, οὐδέν ἐστιν· ὃς δ' ἂν ὀμόσῃ ἐν τῷ χρυσῷ τοῦ ναοῦ ὀφείλει. 'Alas for you, blind guides! You say, "If a man swears by the sanctuary, that is nothing; but if he swears by the gold in the sanctuary, he is bound by his oath." 
17μωροὶ καὶ τυφλοί, τίς γὰρ μείζων ἐστίν, ὁ χρυσὸς ἢ ὁ ναὸς ὁ ἀγιάσας τὸν χρυσόν; Blind fools! Which is the more important, the gold, or the sanctuary which sanctifies the gold? 
18καί, Ὃς ἂν ὀμόσῃ ἐν τῷ θυσιαστηρίῳ, οὐδέν ἐστιν· ὃς δ' ἂν ὀμόσῃ ἐν τῷ δώρῳ τῷ ἐπάνω αὐτοῦ ὀφείλει. Or you say, "If a man swears by the altar, that is nothing; but if he swears by the offering that lies on the altar, he is bound by his oath." 
19τυφλοί, τί γὰρ μεῖζον, τὸ δῶρον ἢ τὸ θυσιαστήριον τὸ ἀγιάζον τὸ δῶρον; What blindness! Which is the more important, the offering, or the altar which sanctifies it? 
20ὁ οὖν ὀμόσας ἐν τῷ θυσιαστηρίῳ ὀμνύει ἐν αὐτῷ καὶ ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς ἐπάνω αὐτοῦ· To swear by the altar, then, is to swear both by the altar and by whatever lies on it; 
21καὶ ὁ ὀμόσας ἐν τῷ ναῷ ὀμνύει ἐν αὐτῷ καὶ ἐν τῷ κατοικοῦντι αὐτόν· to swear by the sanctuary is to swear both by the sanctuary and by him who dwells there; 
22καὶ ὁ ὀμόσας ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ ὀμνύει ἐν τῷ θρόνῳ τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ ἐν τῷ καθημένῳ ἐπάνω αὐτοῦ. and to swear by heaven is to swear both by the throne of God and by um who sits upon it.
 
23Οὐαὶ ὑμῖν, γραμματεῖς καὶ Φαρισαῖοι ὑποκριταί, ὅτι ἀποδεκατοῦτε τὸ ἡδύοσμον καὶ τὸ ἀνηθον καὶ τὸ κύμινον, καὶ ἀφήκατε τὰ βαρύτερα τοῦ νόμου, τὴν κρίσιν καὶ τὸ ἐλεος καὶ τὴν πίστιν· ταῦτα [δὲ] ἔδει ποιῆσαι κἀκεῖνα μὴ ἀφιέναι. 'Alas for you, lawyers and Pharisees, hypocrites! You pay tithes of mint and dill and cummin; but you have overlooked the weightier demands of the Law, justice, mercy, and good faith. It is these you should have practised, without neglect 
24ὁδηγοὶ τυφλοί, οἱ διϋλίζοντες τὸν κώνωπα τὴν δὲ κάμηλον καταπίνοντες. Blind guides! You strain off a midge, yet gulp down a camel! 
25Οὐαὶ ὑμῖν, γραμματεῖς καὶ Φαρισαῖοι ὑποκριταί, ὅτι καθαρίζετε τὸ ἐξωθεν τοῦ ποτηρίου καὶ τῆς παροψίδος, ἐσωθεν δὲ γέμουσιν ἐξ ἀρπαγῆς καὶ ἀκρασίας. 'Alas for you, lawyers and Pharisees, hypocrites! You clean the outside of cup and dish, which you have filled inside by robbery and self-indulgence! 
26Φαρισαῖε τυφλέ, καθάρισον πρῶτον τὸ ἐντὸς τοῦ ποτηρίου, ἵνα γένηται καὶ τὸ ἐκτὸς αὐτοῦ καθαρόν. Blind Pharisee! Clean the inside of the cup first; then the outside will be clean also.
 
27Οὐαὶ ὑμῖν, γραμματεῖς καὶ Φαρισαῖοι ὑποκριταί, ὅτι παρομοιάζετε τάφοις κεκονιαμένοις, οἱτινες ἐξωθεν μὲν φαίνονται ὡραῖοι ἐσωθεν δὲ γέμουσιν ὀστέων νεκρῶν καὶ πάσης ἀκαθαρ σίας. 'Alas for you, lawyers and Pharisees, hypocrites! You are like tombs covered with whitewash; they look well from outside, but inside they are full of dead men's bones and all kinds of filth. 
28οὑτως καὶ ὑμεῖς ἐξωθεν μὲν φαίνεσθε τοῖς ἀνθρώποις δίκαιοι, ἐσωθεν δέ ἐστε μεστοὶ ὑποκρίσεως καὶ ἀνομίας. So it is with you: outside you look like honest men, but inside you are brim-full of hypocrisy and crime.
 
29Οὐαὶ ὑμῖν, γραμματεῖς καὶ Φαρισαῖοι ὑποκριταί, ὅτι οἰκοδομεῖτε τοὺς τάφους τῶν προφητῶν καὶ κοσμεῖτε τὰ μνημεῖα τῶν δικαίων, 'Alas for you, lawyers and Pharisees, hypocrites! You build up the tombs of the prophets and embellish monuments of the saints, 
30καὶ λέγετε, Εἰ ἠμεθα ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις τῶν πατέρων ἡμῶν, οὐκ ἂν ἠμεθα αὐτῶν κοινωνοὶ ἐν τῷ αἱματι τῶν προφητῶν. and you say, "If we had boeen alive in our fathers' time, we should never have taken part with them in the murder of the prophets." 
31ὡστε μαρτυρεῖτε ἑαυτοῖς ὅτι υἱοί ἐστε τῶν φονευσάντων τοὺς προφήτας. So you acknowledge that you are the sons of the men -vho killed the prophets. 
32καὶ ὑμεῖς πληρώσατε τὸ μέτρον τῶν πατέρων ὑμῶν. Go on then, finish off what your fathers began!
 
33ὀφεις γεννήματα ἐχιδνῶν, πῶς φύγητε ἀπὸ τῆς κρίσεως τῆς γεέννης; 'You snakes, you vipers' brood, how can you escape being condemned to hell? 
34διὰ τοῦτο ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἀποστέλλω πρὸς ὑμᾶς προφήτας καὶ σοφοὺς καὶ γραμματεῖς· ἐξ αὐτῶν ἀποκτενεῖτε καὶ σταυρώσετε, καὶ ἐξ αὐτῶν μαστιγώσετε ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς ὑμῶν καὶ διώ ξετε ἀπὸ πόλεως εἰς πόλιν· I send you therefore prophets, sages, and teachers; some of them you will kill and crucify, others you will flog in your synagogues and hound from city to city. 
35ὁπως ἐλθῃ ἐφ' ὑμᾶς πᾶν αἷμα δίκαιον ἐκχυννόμενον ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ἀπὸ τοῦ αἱματος Ἅβελ τοῦ δικαίου ἑως τοῦ αἱματος Ζαχαρίου υἱοῦ Βαραχίου, ὃν ἐφονεύσατε μεταξὺ τοῦ να οῦ καὶ τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου. And so, on you will fall the guilt of all the innocent blood spilt on the ground, from innocent Abel to Zechariah son of Berachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar. 
36ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, ἡξει ταῦτα πάντα ἐπὶ τὴν γενεὰν ταύτην. Believe me, this generation will bear the guilt of it all.
