εἶδεν δέ τινα χήραν πενιχρὰν βάλλουσαν ἐκεῖ λεπτὰ δύο, and he noticed a poor widow putting in two tiny coins.
καὶ εἶπεν, Ἀληθῶς λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ἡ χήρα αὑτη ἡ πτωχὴ πλεῖον πάντων ἐβαλεν· 'I tell you this,' he said: 'this poor widow has given more than any of them;
πάντες γὰρ οὗτοι ἐκ τοῦ περισσεύοντος αὐτοῖς ἐβαλον εἰς τὰ δῶρα, αὑτη δὲ ἐκ τοῦ ὑστερήματος αὐτῆς πάντα τὸν βίον ὃν εἶχεν ἐβαλεν. for those others who have given had more than enough, but she, with less than enough, has given all she had to live on.'

Καί τινων λεγόντων περὶ τοῦ ἱεροῦ, ὅτι λίθοις καλοῖς καὶ ἀναθήμασιν κεκόσμηται, εἶπεν, SOME PEOPLE WERE TALKING about the temple and the fine stones and votive offerings with which it was adorned.The Destruction of the Temple Foretold Lk.21.5-6 | Mt.24.1-2 | Mk.13.1-2
He said, 'These things which you are gazing at-the time will come when not one stone of them will be left upon another: all will be thrown down.'
Ἐπηρώτησαν δὲ αὐτὸν λέγοντες, Διδάσκαλε, πότε οὖν ταῦτα ἐσται, καὶ τί τὸ σημεῖον ὁταν μέλλῃ ταῦτα γίνεσθαὶ; 'Master,' they asked, 'when will it all come about? What will be the sign when it is due to happen?'
Signs and Persecutions Lk.21.7-19 | Mt.24.3-14 | Mk.13.3-13
He said, 'Take care that you are not misled. For many will come claiming my name and saying, "I am he", and, "The Day is upon us." Do not follow them.
And when you hear of wars and insurrections, do not fall into a panic. These things are bound to happen first; but the end does not follow immediately.
Τότε ἐλεγεν αὐτοῖς, Ἐγερθήσεται ἐθνος ἐπ' ἐθνος καὶ βασιλεία ἐπὶ βασιλείαν, Nation will make war upon nation, kingdom upon kingdom;
σεισμοί τε μεγάλοι καὶ κατὰ τόπους λιμοὶ καὶ λοιμοὶ ἐσονται, φόβητρά τε καὶ ἀπ' οὐρανοῦ σημεῖα μεγάλα ἐσται. there will be great earthquakes, and famines and plagues in many places; in the sky terrors and great portents.

πρὸ δὲ τούτων πάντων ἐπιβαλοῦσιν ἐφ' ὑμᾶς τὰς χεῖρας αὐτῶν καὶ διώξουσιν, παραδιδόντες εἰς τὰς συναγωγὰς καὶ φυλακάς, ἀπαγομένους ἐπὶ βασιλεῖς καὶ ἡγεμόνας ἑνεκεν τοῦ ὀνο ματός μου· 'But before all this happens they will set upon you and persecute you. You will be brought before synagogues and put in prison; you will be haled before kings and governors for your allegiance to me.
ἀποβήσεται ὑμῖν εἰς μαρτύριον. This will be your opportunity to testify;
θέτε οὖν ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν μὴ προμελετᾶν ἀπολογηθῆναι, so make up your minds not to prepare your defence beforehand,
ἐγὼ γὰρ δώσω ὑμῖν στόμα καὶ σοφίαν ᾗ οὐ δυνήσονται ἀντιστῆναι ἢ ἀντειπεῖν ἀπαντες οἱ ἀντικείμενοι ὑμῖν. because I myself will give you power of utterance and a wisdom which no opponent will be able to resist or refute.
παραδοθήσεσθε δὲ καὶ ὑπὸ γονέων καὶ ἀδελφῶν καὶ συγγενῶν καὶ φίλων, καὶ θανατώσουσιν ἐξ ὑμῶν, Even your parents and brothers, your relations and friends, will betray you. Some of you will be put to death;
καὶ ἐσεσθε μισούμενοι ὑπὸ πάντων διὰ τὸ ὀνομά μου. and you will be hated by all for your allegiance to me.
But not a hair of your head shall be lost.
By standing firm you will win true life for yourselves.

'But when you see Jerusalem encircled by armies, then you may be sure that her destruction is near.The Destruction of Jerusalem Foretold Lk.21.20-24 | Mt.24.15-21 | Mk.13.14-19
τότε οἱ ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ φευγέτωσαν εἰς τὰ ὀρη, καὶ οἱ ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῆς ἐκχωρείτωσαν, καὶ οἱ ἐν ταῖς χώραις μὴ εἰσερχέσθωσαν εἰς αὐτήν, Then those who are in Judaea must take to the hills; those who are in the city itself must leave it, and those who are out in the country must not enter;
ὁτι ἡμέραι ἐκδικήσεως αὗταί εἰσιν τοῦ πλησθῆναι πάντα τὰ γεγραμμένα. because this is the time of retribution, when all that stands written is to be fulfilled.
οὐαὶ ταῖς ἐν γαστρὶ ἐχούσαις καὶ ταῖς θηλαζούσαις ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἡμέραις· ἐσται γὰρ ἀνάγκη μεγάλη ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς καὶ ὀργὴ τῷ λαῷ τούτῳ, Alas for women who are with child in those days, or have children at the breast! For there will be great distress in the land and a terrible judgement upon this people.
They will fall at the sword's point; they will be carried captive into all countries; and Jerusalem will be trampled down by foreigners until their day has run its course.

Καὶ ἐσονται σημεῖα ἐν ἡλίῳ καὶ σελήνῃ καὶ ἀστροις, καὶ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς συνοχὴ ἐθνῶν ἐν ἀπορίᾳ ἠχους θαλάσσης καὶ σάλου, 'Portents will appear in sun, moon, and stars. On earth nations will stand helpless, not knowing which way to turn from the roar and surge of the sea;The Coming of the Son of Man Lk.21.25-28 | Mt.24.29-31 | Mk.13.24-37
ἀποψυχόντων ἀνθρώπων ἀπὸ φόβου καὶ προσδοκίας τῶν ἐπερχομένων τῇ οἰκουμένῃ, αἱ γὰρ δυνάμεις τῶν οὐρανῶν σαλευθήσονται. men will faint with terror at the thought of all that is coming upon the world; for the celestial powers will be shaken.- For the powers of the heavens will be shaken Lk.21.26 | Is.34.4
And then they will see the Son of Man coming on a cloud with great power and glory.- the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory Lk.21.27 | Dn.7.13
When all this begins to happen, stand upright and hold your heads high, because your liberation is near.'

ὁταν προβάλωσιν ἠδη, βλέποντες ἀφ' ἑαυτῶν γινώσκετε ὅτι ἠδη ἐγγὺς τὸ θέρος ἐστίν· As soon as it buds, you can see for yourselves that summer is near.
In the same way when you see all this happening, you may be sure that the kingdom of God is near.

'I tell you this: the present generation will live to see it all.
Heaven and earth will pass away; my words will never pass away.

Προσέχετε δὲ ἑαυτοῖς μήποτε βαρηθῶσιν ὑμῶν αἱ καρδίαι ἐν κραιπάλῃ καὶ μέθῃ καὶ μερίμναις βιωτικαῖς, καὶ ἐπιστῇ ἐφ' ὑμᾶς αἰφνίδιος ἡ ἡμέρα ἐκείνη· 'Keep a watch on yourselves; do not let your minds be dulled by dissipation and drunkenness and worldly cares so that the great Day closes upon you suddenly like a trap;Exhortation to Watch Lk.21.34-38
ἐπεισελεύσεται γὰρ ἐπὶ πάντας τοὺς καθημένους ἐπὶ πρόσωπον πάσης τῆς γῆς. for that day will come on all men, wherever they are, the whole world over.
Be on the alert, praying at all times for strength to pass safely through all these imminent troubles and to stand in the presence of the Son of Man.'

And in the early morning the people flocked to listen to him in the temple.

(Some manuscripts here insert the passage relating the woman taken in adultery: John 7.53-8.11.)
