Once, in a certain place, Jesus was at prayer. When he ceased, one of his disciples said, 'Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.'Teaching about Prayer Lk.11.1-13 | Mt.6.9-15 | Mt.7.7-11

He answered,
'When you pray, say,

"Father, thy name be hallowed;
Thy kingdom come.

Give us each day our daily bread.

And forgive us our sins,
For we too forgive all who have done us wrong.
And do not bring us to the test."'

Καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς, Τίς ἐξ ὑμῶν ἑξει φίλον καὶ πορεύσεται πρὸς αὐτὸν μεσονυκτίου καὶ εἰπῃ αὐτῷ, Φίλε, χρῆσόν μοι τρεῖς ἀρτους, He added, 'Suppose one of you has a friend who comes to him in the middle of the night and says, "My friend, lend me three loaves,
ἐπειδὴ φίλος μου παρεγένετο ἐξ ὁδοῦ πρός με καὶ οὐκ ἐχω ὃ παραθήσω αὐτῷ· for a friend of mine on a journey has turned up at my house, and I have nothing to offer him";
κἀκεῖνος ἐσωθεν ἀποκριθεὶς εἰπῃ, Μή μοι κόπους πάρεχε· ἠδη ἡ θύρα κέκλεισται, καὶ τὰ παιδία μου μετ' ἐμοῦ εἰς τὴν κοίτην εἰσίν· οὐ δύναμαι ἀναστὰς δοῦναί σοι. and he replies from inside, "Do not bother me. The door is shut for the night; my children and I have gone to bed; and I cannot get up and give you what you want."
I tell you that even if he will not provide for him out of friendship, the very shamelessness of the request will make him get up and give him all he needs.
And so I say to you, ask, and you will receive; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened.
For everyone who asks receives, he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.

τίνα δὲ ἐξ ὑμῶν τὸν πατέρα αἰτήσει ὁ υἱὸς ἰχθύν, καὶ ἀντὶ ἰχθύος ὀφιν αὐτῷ ἐπιδώσε; 'Is there a father among you who will offer his son a snake when he asks for fish,
ἢ καὶ αἰτήσει ᾠόν, ἐπιδώσει αὐτῷ σκορπίον; or a scorpion when he asks for an egg?
If you, then, bad as you are, know how to give your children what is good for them, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!'

καὶ ἐθαύμασαν οἱ ὀχλοι· HE WAS DRIVING OUT a devil which was dumb; and when the devil had come out, the dumb man began to speak.Jesus and Beelzebul Lk.11.14-23 | Mt.12.22-32 | Mk.3.20-30 | Lk.12.10
τινὲς δὲ ἐξ αὐτῶν εἶπον, Ἐν Βεελζεβοὺλ τῷ ἀρχοντι τῶν δαιμονίων ἐκβάλλει τὰ δαιμόνια· The people were astonished, but some of them said, 'It is by Beelzebub prince of devils that he drives the devils out.'
Others, by way of a test, demanded of him a sign from heaven.
But he knew what was in their minds, and said, 'Every kingdom divided against itself goes to ruin, and a divided household falls.
Equally if Satan is divided against is himself, how can his kingdom stand? - since, as you would have it, I drive out the devils by Beelzebub.
If it is by Beelzebub that I cast out devils, by whom do your own people drive them out? If this is your argument, they themselves will refute you.
But if it is by the finger of God that I drive out the devils, then be sure the kingdom of God has already come upon you.

ὁταν ὁ ἰσχυρὸς καθωπλισμένος φυλάσσῃ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ αὐλήν, ἐν εἰρήνῃ ἐστὶν τὰ ὑπάρχοντα αὐτοῦ· 'When a strong man fully armed is on guard over his castle his possessions are safe.
But when someone stronger comes upon him and overpowers him, he carries off the arms and armour on which the man had relied and divides the plunder.

'He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters.

Ὅταν τὸ ἀκάθαρτον Πνεῦμα ἐξέλθῃ ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου, διέρχεται δῖ ἀνύδρων τόπων ζητοῦν ἀνάπαυσιν, καὶ μὴ εὑρίσκον, [τότε] λέγει, Ὑποστρέψω εἰς τὸν οἶκόν μου ὁθεν ἐξῆλθ ον· 'When an unclean spirit comes out of a man it wanders over the deserts seeking a resting-place; and finding none, it says, "I will go back to the home I left."The Return of the Unclean Spirit Lk.11.24-26 | Mt.12.43-45
So it returns and finds the house swept clean, and tidy.
Off it goes and collects seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they all come in and settle down; and in the end the man's plight is worse than before.'

While he was speaking thus, a woman in the crowd called out, 'Happy the womb that carried you and the breasts that suckled you!'True Blessedness Lk.11.27-28
He rejoined, 'No, happy are those who hear the word of God and keep it.'

With the crowds swarming round him he went on to say: 'This is a wicked generation. It demands a sign, and the only sign that will be given to it is the sign of Jonah.The Demand for a Sign Lk.11.29-32 | Mt.12.33-37 | Mk.8.11-12
For just as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation.
At the Judgement, when the men of this generation are on trial, the Queen of the South will appear against them and ensure their condemnation, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and what
The men of Nineveh will appear at the Judgement when the men of this generation are on trial, and ensure their condemnation, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and what is here is greater than Jonah.

'No one lights a lamp and puts it in a cellar, but rather on the lamp-stand so that those who enter may see the light.The Light of the Body Lk.11.33-36 | Mt.5.15 | Mt.6.22-23
The lamp of your body is the eye. When your eyes are sound, you have light for your whole body; but when the eyes are bad, you are in darkness.
See to it then that the light you have is not darkness.
If you have light for your whole body with no trace of darkness, it will all be as bright as when a lamp flashes its rays upon you.'

WHEN HE HAD FINISHED SPEAKING, a Pharisee invited him to dinner.The Denouncing of the Pharisees and Lawyers Lk.11.37-52 | Mt.23.1-36 | Mk.12.38-40 | Lk.20.45-47
He came in and sat down. The Pharisee noticed with surprise that he had not begun by washing before the meal.
But the Lord said to him, 'You Pharisees! You clean the outside of cup and plate; but inside you there is nothing but greed and wickedness.
Did not he who made the outside make the inside too?
But let what is in the cup be given in charity, and all is clean.

'Alas for you Pharisees! You pay tithes of mint and rue and every garden-herb, but have no care for justice and the love of God. It is these you should have practised, without neglecting the others.

'Alas for you Pharisees! You love the seats of honour in synagogues, and salutations in the market-places.

'Alas, alas, you are like unmarked graves over which men may walk without knowing it.'

In reply to this one of the lawyers said, 'Master, when you say things like this you are insulting us too.'
Jesus rejoined: 'Yes, you lawyers, it is no better with you! For you load men with intolerable burdens, and will not put a single finger to the load.

'Alas, you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers murdered,
ἀρα μάρτυρές ἐστε καὶ συνευδοκεῖτε τοῖς ἐργοις τῶν πατέρων ὑμῶν, ὅτι αὐτοὶ μὲν ἀπέκτειναν αὐτοὺς ὑμεῖς δὲ οἰκοδομεῖτε. and so testify that you approve of the deeds your fathers did; they committed the murders and you provide the tombs.

διὰ τοῦτο καὶ ἡ σοφία τοῦ θεοῦ εἶπεν, Ἀποστελῶ εἰς αὐτοὺς προφήτας καὶ ἀποστόλους, καὶ ἐξ αὐτῶν ἀποκτενοῦσιν καὶ διώξουσιν, 'This is why the Wisdom of God said, "I will send them prophets and messengers; and some of these they will persecute and kill";
ἵνα ἐκζητηθῇ τὸ αἷμα πάντων τῶν προφητῶν τὸ ἐκκεχυμένον ἀπὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου ἀπὸ τῆς γενεᾶς ταύτης, so that this generation so will have to answer for the blood of all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world;
ἀπὸ αἱματος Ἅβελ ἑως αἱματος Ζαχαρίου τοῦ ἀπολομένου μεταξὺ τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου καὶ τοῦ οἰκου· ναί, λέγω ὑμῖν, ἐκζητηθήσεται ἀπὸ τῆς γενεᾶς ταύτης. from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. I tell you, this generation will have to answer for it all.

'Alas for you lawyers! You have taken away the key of knowledge. You did not go in yourselves, and those who were on their way in, you stopped.'

Κἀκεῖθεν ἐξελθόντος αὐτοῦ ἠρξαντο οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι δεινῶς ἐνέχειν καὶ ἀποστοματίζειν αὐτὸν περὶ πλειόνων, After he had left the house, the lawyers and Pharisees began to assail him fiercely and to ply him with a host of questions,
ἐνεδρεύοντες αὐτὸν θηρεῦσαί τι ἐκ τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ. laying snares to catch him with his own words.
