καὶ ἐζήτουν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς πῶς αὐτὸν ἐν δόλῳ κρατήσαντες ἀποκτείνωσιν· NOW THE FESTIVAL of Passover and Unleavened Bread was only two days off; and the chief priests and the doctors of the law were trying to devise some cunning plan to seize him and put him to death. The Plot to Kill Jesus Mk.14.1-2 | Mt.26.1-5 | Lk.22.1-2 | Jn.11.45-53
'It must not be during the festival,' they said, 'or we should have rioting among the people.'

Jesus was at Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper. As he sat at table, a woman came in carrying a small bottle of very costly perfume, oil of pure nard. She broke it open and poured the oil over his head. The Anointing at Bethany Mk.14.3-9 | Mt.26.6-13 | Lk.12.1-8
ἦσαν δέ τινες ἀγανακτοῦντες πρὸς ἑαυτούς, Εἰς τί ἡ ἀπώλεια αὑτη τοῦ μύρου γέγονεν; Some of those present said to one another angrily, 'Why this waste?
The perfume might have been sold for thirty pounds and the money given to the poor'; and they turned upon her with fury.
But Jesus said, 'Let her alone. Why must you make trouble for her?
It is a fine thing she has done for me. You have the poor among you always, and you can help them whenever you like; but you will not always have me.
She has done what lay in her power; she is beforehand with anointing my body for burial.
I tell you this: wherever in all the world the Gospel is proclaimed, what she has done will be told as her memorial.'

Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to betray him to them. Judas' Agreement to Betray Jesus Mk.14.10-11 | Mt.26.14-16 | Lk.22.3-6
When they heard what he had come for, they were greatly pleased, and promised him money; and he began to look for a good opportunity to betray him.

Καὶ τῇ πρώτῃ ἡμέρᾳ τῶν ἀζύμων, ὅτε τὸ πάσχα ἐθυον, λέγουσιν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ, Ποῦ θέλεις ἀπελθόντες ἑτοιμάσωμεν ἵνα φάγῃς τὸ πάσχὰ; NOW ON THE FIRST DAY of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lambs were being slaughtered, his disciples said to him, 'Where would you like us to go and prepare for your Passover supper?'The Passover with the Disciples Mk.14.12-21 | Mt.26.17-25 | Lk.22.7-14 | Lk.22.21-23 | Jn.13.21-30
καὶ ἀποστέλλει δύο τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς, Ὑπάγετε εἰς τὴν πόλιν, καὶ ἀπαντήσει ὑμῖν ἄνθρωπος κεράμιον ὑδατος βαστάζων· ἀκολουθήσατε αὐτῷ, So he sent out two of his disciples with these instructions: 'Go into the city, and a man will meet you carrying a jar of water.
καὶ ὁπου ἐὰν εἰσέλθῃ εἰπατε τῷ οἰκοδεσπότῃ ὅτι Ὁ διδάσκαλος λέγει, Ποῦ ἐστιν τὸ κατάλυμά μου ὁπου τὸ πάσχα μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν μου φάγὼ; Follow him, and when he enters a house give this message to the householder: "The Master says, 'Where is the room reserved for me to eat the Passover with my disciples?'"
He will show you a large room upstairs, set out in readiness. Make the preparations for us there.'
Then the disciples went off, and when they came into the city they found everything just as he had told them. So they prepared for Passover.

In the evening he came to the house with the Twelve.
As they sat at supper Jesus said, 'I tell you is this: one of you will betray me - one who is eating with me.'
ἠρξαντο λυπεῖσθαι καὶ λέγειν αὐτῷ εἷς κατὰ εἷς, Μήτι ἐγώ; At this they were dismayed; and one by one they said to him, 'Not I, surely?'
'It is one of the Twelve', he said, 'who is dipping into the same bowl with me.
The Son of Man is going the way appointed for him in the scriptures; but alas for that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for that man if he had never been born.'

During supper he took bread, and having said the blessing he broke it and gave it to them, with the words: 'Take this; this is my body.' The Institution of the Lord's Supper Mk.14.22-25 | Mt.26.26-30 | Lk.22.14-23 | 1Cor.11.23-26
Then he took a cup, and having offered thanks to God he gave it to them; and they all drank from it.
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Τοῦτό ἐστιν τὸ αἷμά μου τῆς διαθήκης τὸ ἐκχυννόμενον ὑπὲρ πολλῶν· And he said, 'This is my blood of the covenant, shed for many.
I tell you this: never again shall I drink from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.'

After singing the Passover Hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

And Jesus said, 'You will all fall from your faith; for it stands written: "I will strike the shepherd down and the sheep will be scattered." Peter's denial Foretold Mk.14.27-31 | Mt.26.31-35 | Lk.22.31-34 | Jn.13.36-38 | Zch.13.7
Nevertheless, after I am raised again I will go on before you into Galilee.'
Peter answered, 'Everyone else may fall away, but I will not.'
Jesus said, 'I tell you this: today, this very night, before the cock crows twice, you yourself will disown me three times.'
But he insisted and repeated: 'Even if I must die with you, I will never disown you.' And they all said the same.

WHEN THEY REACHED a place called Gethsemane, he said to his disciples, 'Sit here while I pray.' The Prayer in Gethsemane Mk.14.32-42 | Mt.26.36-46 | Lk.22.39-46
καὶ παραλαμβάνει τὸν Πέτρον καὶ [τὸν] Ἰάκωβον καὶ [τὸν] Ἰωάννην μετ' αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἠρξατο ἐκθαμβεῖσθαι καὶ ἀδημονεῖν, And he took Peter and James and John with him. Horror and dismay came over him,
καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς, Περίλυπός ἐστιν ἡ ψυχή μου ἑως θανάτου· μείνατε ὧδε καὶ γρηγορεῖτε. and he said to them, 'My heart is ready to break with grief; stop here, and stay awake.'
καὶ προελθὼν μικρὸν ἐπιπτεν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, καὶ προσηύχετο ἵνα εἰ δυνατόν ἐστιν παρέλθῃ ἀπ' αὐτοῦ ἡ ὡρα, Then he went forward a little, threw himself on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, this hour might pass him by.
'Abba, Father,' he said, 'all things are possible to thee; take this cup away from me. Yet not what I will, but what thou wilt.'

καὶ ἐρχεται καὶ εὑρίσκει αὐτοὺς καθεύδοντας, καὶ λέγει τῷ Πέτρῳ, Σίμων, καθεύδεις; οὐκ ἰσχυσας μίαν ὡραν γρηγορῆσαὶ; He came back and found them asleep; and he said to Peter, 'Asleep, Simon? Were you not able to keep awake for one hour?
Stay awake, all of you; and pray that you may be spared the test: the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.'
Once more he went away and prayed.
On his return he found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know how to answer him.

The third time he came and said to them, 'Still sleeping? Still taking your ease? Enough! The hour has come. The Son of Man is betrayed to sinful men.
Up, let us go forward! My betrayer is upon us.'

Suddenly, while he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared, and with him was a crowd armed with swords and cudgels, sent by the chief priests, lawyers, and elders. The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus Mk.14.43-50 | Mt.26.47-56 | Lk.22.47-53 | Jn.18.3-12
Now the traitor had agreed with them upon a signal: 'The one I kiss is your man; seize him and get him safely away.'
When he reached the spot, he stepped forward at once and said to Jesus, 'Rabbi', and kissed him.
Then they seized him and held him fast.

One of the party drew his sword, and struck at the High Priest's servant, cutting off his ear.
καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Ὡς ἐπὶ λῃστὴν ἐξήλθατε μετὰ μαχαιρῶν καὶ ξύλων συλλαβεῖν μὲ; Then Jesus spoke: 'Do you take me for a bandit, that you have come out with swords and cudgels to arrest me?
Day after day I was within your reach as I taught in the temple, and you did not lay hands on me. But let the so scriptures be fulfilled.'
Then the disciples all deserted him and ran away.

Καὶ νεανίσκος τις συνηκολούθει αὐτῷ περιβεβλημένος σινδόνα ἐπὶ γυμνοῦ, καὶ κρατοῦσιν αὐτόν· Among those following was a young man with nothing on but a linen cloth. They tried to seize him, The Young Man Who Fled Mk.14.51-52
ὁ δὲ καταλιπὼν τὴν σινδόνα γυμνὸς ἐφυγεν. but he slipped out of the linen cloth and ran away naked.

THEN THEY LED JESUS away to the High Priest's house, where the chief priests, elders, and doctors of the law were all assembling. Jesus before the Council Mk.14.53-65 | Mt.26.57-68 | Lk.22.54-55 | Jn.18.13-14 | Jn.18.19-24
Peter followed him at a distance right into the High Priest's courtyard; and there he remained, sitting among the attendants, warming himself at the fire.

οἱ δὲ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ ὁλον τὸ συνέδριον ἐζήτουν κατὰ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ μαρτυρίαν εἰς τὸ θανατῶσαι αὐτόν, καὶ οὐχ ηὑρισκον· The chief priests and the whole Council tried to find some evidence against Jesus to warrant a death-sentence, but failed to find any.
Many gave false evidence against him, but their statements did not tally.
καί τινες ἀναστάντες ἐψευδομαρΤύρουν κατ' αὐτοῦ λέγοντες Some stood up and gave this false evidence against him:
ὁτι Ἡμεῖς ἠκούσαμεν αὐτοῦ λέγοντος ὅτι Ἐγὼ καταλύσω τὸν ναὸν τοῦτον τὸν χειροποίητον καὶ διὰ τριῶν ἡμερῶν ἀλλον ἀχειροποίητον οἰκοδομήσω· 'We heard him say, "I will throw down this temple, made with human hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands." '
But even on this point their evidence did not agree.

καὶ ἀναστὰς ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς εἰς μέσον ἐπηρώτησεν τὸν Ἰησοῦν λέγων, Οὐκ ἀποκρίνῃ οὐδέν; τί οὗτοί σου καταμαρτυροῦσιν; Then the High Priest stood up in his place and questioned Jesus: 'Have you no answer to the charges that these witnesses bring against you?'
πάλιν ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς ἐπηρώτα αὐτὸν καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ, Σὺ εἶ ὁ Χριστὸς ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ εὐλογητοῦ; But he kept silence; he made no reply.

Again the High Priest questioned him: 'Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?'

Jesus said, 'I am; and you will see the Son of Man seated on the right hand of God and coming with the clouds of heaven.' - You will see the Son of man seated Mk.14.62 | Ps.110.1 | Dn.7.13
ὁ δὲ ἀρχιερεὺς διαρρήξας τοὺς χιτῶνας αὐτοῦ λέγει, Τί ἐτι χρείαν ἐχομεν μαρτύρων; Then the High Priest tore his robes and said, 'Need we call further witnesses?
You have heard the blasphemy. What is your opinion?' Their judgement was unanimous: that he was guilty and should be put to death.

Some began to spit on him, blindfolded him, and struck him with their fists, crying out, 'Prophesy!' And the High Priest's men set upon him with blows.

Καὶ ὀντος τοῦ Πέτρου κάτω ἐν τῇ αὐλῇ ἐρχεται μία τῶν παιδισκῶν τοῦ ἀρχιερέως, Meanwhile Peter was still in the courtyard down-stairs. One of the High Priest's serving-maids came by and saw him there warming himself. Peter's Denial of Jesus Mk.14.66-72 | Mt.26.69-75 | Lk.22.56-62 | Jn.18.15-18 | Jn.18.25-27
She looked into his face and said, 'You were there too, with this man from Nazareth, this Jesus.'
But he denied it: 'I know nothing,' he said; 'I do not understand what you mean.'
καὶ ἡ παιδίσκη ἰδοῦσα αὐτὸν ἠρξατο πάλιν λέγειν τοῖς παρεστῶσιν ὅτι Οὗτος ἐξ αὐτῶν ἐστιν. Then he went outside into the porch; and the maid saw him there again and began to say to the bystanders, 'He is one of them';
καὶ μετὰ μικρὸν πάλιν οἱ παρεστῶτες ἐλεγον τῷ Πέτρῳ, Ἀληθῶς ἐξ αὐτῶν εἶ, καὶ γὰρ Γαλιλαῖος εἶ. and again he denied it.

Again, a little later, the bystanders said to Peter, 'Surely you are one of them. You must be; you are a Galilean.'

At this he broke out into curses, and with an oath he said, 'I do not know this man you speak of.'
Then the cock crew a second time; and Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, 'Before the cock crows twice you will disown me three times.' And he burst into tears.
