Forsothe batel was moued eft; and Dauyd yede out, and fauyt ayens Filisteis, and he smoot hem with a greet wounde, and thei fledden fro his face. |
And the war began again, and David went out and fought against the Philistines, and defeated them with a great slaughter, and they fled from his face. | Saul Tries to Kill David. |
| 9 | Et factus est spiritus Domini malus in Saul: sedebat autem in domo sua, et tenebat lanceam: porro David psallebat manu sua. |
And the yuel spirit of the Lord was maad on Saul; sotheli he sat in his hows, and helde a spere; certis Dauid harpide in his hond. |
And the evil spirit from the Lord came upon Saul, and he sat in his house, and held a spear in his hand: and David played with his hand. | |
| 10 | Nisusque est Saul configere David lancea in pariete, et declinavit David a facie Saul: lancea autem casso vulnere perlata est in parietem, et David fugit, et salvatus est nocteilla. |
And Saul enforside to prene with the spere Dauid in the wal; and Dauid bowide fro the face of Saul; forsothe the spere with voide wounde was borun in to the wal; and Dauid fledde, and was saued in that niyt. |
And Saul endeavoured to nail David to the wall with his spear. And David slipt away out of the presence of Saul: and the spear missed him, and was fastened in the wall, and David fled and escaped that night. | |

Therfor Saul sente hise knyytis in the nyyt in to the hows of Dauid, that thei schulden kepe hym, and that he schulde be slayn in the morewtide. And whanne Mychol, the wijf of Dauid, hadde teld this to Dauid, and seide, If thou sauest not thee in this nyyt, thou schalt die to morew; |
Saul therefore sent his guards to David's house to watch him, that he might be killed in the morning. And when Michol David's wife had told him this, saying: Unless thou save thyself this night, to morrow thou wilt die, | |

She let him down through a window. And he went and fled away and escaped. | |
| 13 | Tulit autem Michol statuam, et posuit eam super lectum, et pellem pilosam caprarum posuit ad caput ejus, et operuit eam vestimentis. |
Sotheli Mychol took an ymage, and puttide it on the bed, and puttide an heeri skyn of geet at the heed therof, and hilide it with clothis. |
And Michol took an image and laid it on the bed, and put a goat's skin with the hair at the head of it, and covered it with clothes. | |
| 14 | Misit autem Saul apparitores, qui raperent David: et responsum est quod ægrotaret. |
Forsothe Saul sente sergeauntis, that schulden rauysche Dauid, and it was answeride, that he was sijk. |
And Saul sent officers to seize David: and it was answered that he was sick. | |
| 15 | Rursumque misit Saul nuntios ut viderent David, dicens: Afferte eum ad me in lecto, ut occidatur. |
And eft Saul sente messangeris, that thei schulden se Dauid, and he seide, Brynge ye hym to me in the bed, that he be slayn. |
And again Saul sent to see David, saying: Bring him to me in the bed, that he may be slain. | |
| 16 | Cumque venissent nuntii, inventum est simulacrum super lectum, et pellis caprarum ad caput ejus. |
And whanne the messangeris hadden come, a symylacre was foundun on the bed, and skynnes of geet at the heed therof. |
And when the messengers were come in, they found an image upon the bed, and a goat's skin at its head. | |
| 17 | Dixitque Saul ad Michol: Quare sic illusisti mihi, et dimisisti inimicum meum ut fugeret? Et respondit Michol ad Saul: Quia ipse locutus est mihi: Dimitte me, alioquin interficiam te. |
And Saul seide to Mychol, Whi scornedist thou me so, and delyueredist myn enemy, that he fledde? And Mychol answeride to Saul, For he spak to me, and seide, Delyuere thou me, ellis Y schal slee thee. |
And Saul said to Michol: Why hast thou deceived me so, and let my enemy go and flee away? And Michol answered Saul: Because he said to me: Let me go, or else I will kill thee. | |
| 18 | David autem fugiens salvatus est, et venit ad Samuel in Ramatha, et nuntiavit ei omnia quæ fecerat sibi Saul: et abierunt ipse et Samuel, et morati sunt in Najoth. |
Forsothe Dauid fledde, and was sauyd; and he cam to Samuel in to Ramatha, and telde to hym alle thingis which Saul hadde do to hym; and he and Samuel yeden, and dwelliden in Naioth. |
But David fled and escaped, and came to Samuel in Ramatha, and told him all that Saul had done to him: and he and Samuel went and dwelt in Najoth. | |
| 19 | Nuntiatum est autem Sauli a dicentibus: Ecce David in Najoth in Ramatha. |
Forsothe it was teld to Saul of men, seiynge, Lo! Dauid is in Naioth in Ramatha. |
And it was told Saul by some, saying: Behold David is in Najoth in Ramatha. | |
| 20 | Misit ergo Saul lictores, ut raperent David: qui cum vidissent cuneum prophetarum vaticinantium, et Samuelem stantem super eos, factus est etiam spiritus Domini in illis, et prophetare cœperunt etiam ipsi. |
Therfor Saul sente sleeris, that thei schulden rauysche Dauid; and whanne thei hadden seyn the cumpeny of profetis profeciynge, and Samuel stondynge ouer hem, the Spirit of the Lord, that is, the spirit of deuocioun, was maad in hem, and thei also bigunnen to prophecie. |
So Saul sent officers to take David: and when they saw a company of prophets prophesying, and Samuel presiding over them, the spirit of the Lord came also upon them, and they likewise began to prophesy. | |

And whanne this was teld to Saul, he sente also othere messangeris; sotheli and thei profesieden. And eft Saul sente the thridde messangeris, and thei prophecieden. And Saul was wrooth with irefulnesse; |
And when this was told Saul, he sent other messengers: but they also prophesied. And again Saul sent messengers the third time: and they prophesied also. And Saul being exceedingly angry, | |
| 22 | abiit etiam ipse in Ramatha, et venit usque ad cisternam magnam, quæ est in Socho, et interrogavit, et dixit : In quo loco sunt Samuel et David ? Dictumque est ei : Ecce in Najoth sunt in Ramatha. |
and he also yede in to Ramatha, and he cam til to the greet cisterne, which is in Socoth, and he axide, and seide, In what place ben Samuel and Dauid? And it was seid to hym, Lo! thei ben in Naioth in Ramatha. |
Went also himself to Ramatha, and came as far as the great cistern, which is in Socho, and he asked, and said: In what place are Samuel and David? And it was told him: Behold they axe in Najoth in Ramatha. | |
| 23 | Et abiit in Najoth in Ramatha, et factus est etiam super eum spiritus Domini, et ambulabat ingrediens, et prophetabat usque dum veniret in Najoth in Ramatha. |
And he yede in to Naioth in Ramatha; and the Spirit of the Lord was maad also on him; and he yede, and entride, and propheciede, til the while he cam in to Naioth in Ramatha. |
And he went to Najoth in Ramatha, and the spirit of the Lord came upon him also, and he went on, and prophesied till he came to Najoth in Ramatha. | |
| 24 | Et expoliavit etiam ipse se vestimentis suis, et prophetavit cum ceteris coram Samuele, et cecidit nudus tota die illa et nocte. Unde et exivit proverbium: Num et Saul inter prophetas? |
And he also dispuylide him silf of hise clothis, and propheciede with othere men bifor Samuel, and he profeciede nakid in al that dai and nyyt. Wherfor a prouerbe, that is, a comyn word, yede out, Whether and Saul among prophetis? |
And he stripped himself also of his garments, and prophesied with the rest before Samuel, and lay down naked all that day and night. This gave occasion to a proverb: What! is Saul too among the prophets? | |
| 1 | Fugit autem David de Najoth, quæ est in Ramatha, veniensque locutus est coram Jonatha: Quid feci? quæ est iniquitas mea, et quod peccatum meum in patrem tuum, quia quærit animam meam? |
Forsothe Dauid fledde fro Naioth, which is in Ramatha, and cam and spak bifor Jonathas, What haue Y do? what is my wickidnesse, and what is my synne ayens thi fadir, for he sekith my lijf? |
But David fled from Najoth, which is in Ramatha, and came and said to Jonathan: What have I done? what is my iniquity, and what is my sin against thy father, that he seeketh my life? | Jonathan helps David. 1Sm.20.1-42 |

And Jonathas seide to hym, Fer be it fro thee, thou schalt not die, for my fadir schal not do ony thing greet ether litil, no but he schewe firste to me; therfor my fadir kepte preuy fro me this word oneli, forsothe it schal not be. |
And he said to him: God forbid, thou shalt not die: for my father will do nothing great or little, without first telling me: hath then my father hid this word only from me? no, this shall not be. | |
| 3 | Et juravit rursum Davidi. Et ille ait : Scit profecto pater tuus quia inveni gratiam in oculis tuis, et dicet : Nesciat hoc Jonathas, ne forte tristetur. Quinimmo vivit Dominus, et vivit anima tua, quia uno tantum (ut ita dicam) gradu, ego morsque dividimur. |
And eft he swoor to Dauid. And Dauid seide, Treuli thi fadir woot, that Y haue founde grace in thin iyen, and he schal seie, Jonathas wite not this, lest perauenture he be sory; certis the Lord lyueth, and thi soule lyueth, for, that Y seie so, Y and deeth ben departid oneli bi o degree. |
And he swore again to David. And David said: Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thy sight, and he will say: Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved. But truly as the Lord liveth, and thy soul liveth, there is but one step (as I may say) between me and death. | |
| 4 | Et ait Jonathas ad David: Quodcumque dixerit mihi anima tua, faciam tibi. |
And Jonathas seide to Dauid, What euer thing thi soule schal seie to me, Y schal do to thee. |
And Jonathan said to David: Whatsoever thy soul shall say to me, I will do for thee. | |
| 5 | Dixit autem David ad Jonathan: Ecce calendæ sunt crastino, et ego ex more sedere soleo juxta regem ad vescendum: dimitte ergo me ut abscondar in agro usque ad vesperam diei tertiæ. |
And Dauid seide to Jonathas, Lo! calendis ben to morewe, and bi custom Y am wont to sitte bi the kyng to ete; therfor suffre thou me, that Y be hid in the feeld til to euentid of the thridde dai. |
And David said to Jonathan: Behold to morrow is the new moon, and I according to custom am wont to sit beside the king to eat: let me go then that I may be hid in the field till the evening of the third day. | |
| 6 | Si respiciens requisierit me pater tuus, respondebis ei: Rogavit me David ut iret celeriter in Bethlehem civitatem suam, quia victimæ solemnes ibi sunt universis contribulibus suis. |
If thi fadir biholdith, and axith me, thou schalt answere to hym, Dauid preiede me, that he schulde go swiftli into Bethleem, his citee, for solempne sacrifices ben there to alle the men of his lynage. |
If thy father look and inquire for me, thou shalt answer him: David asked me that he might run to Bethlehem his own city: because there are solemn sacrifices there for all his tribe. | |
| 7 | Si dixerit: Bene: pax erit servo tuo. Si autem fuerit iratus, scito quia completa est malitia ejus. |
If he seith, Wel, pees schal be to thi seruaunt; forsothe if he is wrooth, wite thou, that his malice is fillid. |
If he shall say, It is well: thy servant shall have peace: but if he be angry, know that his malice is come to its height. | |
| 8 | Fac ergo misericordiam in servum tuum, quia fœdus Domini me famulum tuum tecum inire fecisti: si autem est iniquitas aliqua in me, tu me interfice, et ad patrem tuum ne introducas me. |
Therfor do thou mercy in to thi seruaunt, for thou madist me thi seruaunt to make with thee the boond of pees of the Lord; sotheli if ony wickidnesse is in me, sle thou me, and brynge thou not in me to thi fadir. |
Deal mercifully then with thy servant: for thou hast brought me thy servant into a covenant of the Lord with thee. But if there be any iniquity in me, do thou kill me, and bring me not in to thy father. | |
| 9 | Et ait Jonathas: Absit hoc a te: neque enim fieri potest, ut si certe cognovero completam esse patris mei malitiam contra te, non annuntiem tibi. |
And Jonathas seide, Fer be this fro me, for it mai not be doon, that Y telle not to thee, if Y knowe certeynli, that the malice of my fadir is fillid ayens thee. |
And Jonathan said: Far be this from thee: for if I should certainly know that evil is determined by my father against thee, I could do no otherwise than tell thee. | |
| 10 | Responditque David ad Jonathan: Quis renuntiabit mihi, si quid forte responderit tibi pater tuus dure de me? |
And Dauid answeride to Jonathas, Who schal telle to me, if in caas thi fadir answerith harde ony thing of me? |
And David answered Jonathan: Who shall bring me word, if thy father should answer thee harshly concerning me? | |
| 11 | Et ait Jonathas ad David: Veni, et egrediamur foras in agrum. Cumque exissent ambo in agrum, |
And Jonathas seide to Dauid, Come thou, and go we forth in to the feeld. And whanne bothe hadden go in to the feeld, |
And Jonathan said to David: Come and let us go out into the field. And when they were both of them gone out into the field, | |
| 12 | ait Jonathas ad David: Domine Deus Israël, si investigavero sententiam patris mei crastino vel perendie, et aliquid boni fuerit super David, et non statim misero ad te, et notum tibi fecero, |
Jonathas seide to Dauid, Lord God of Israel, if Y enquere the sentence of my fadir to morewe, ether in the nexte dai aftir, and ony thing of good is of Dauid, and Y sende not anoon to thee, |
Jonathan said to David: O Lord God of Israel, if I shall discover my father's mind, to morrow or the day after, and there be any thing good for David, and I send not immediately to thee, and make it known to thee, | |
| 13 | hæc faciat Dominus Jonathæ, et hæc addat. Si autem perseveraverit patris mei malitia adversum te, revelabo aurem tuam, et dimittam te, ut vadas in pace, et sit Dominus tecum, sicut fuit cum patre meo. |
and make knowun to thee, God do these thingis to Jonathas, and adde these thingis. Forsothe if the malice of my fadir contynueth ayens thee, Y schal schewe to thin eere, and Y schal delyuere thee, that thou go in pees; and the Lord be with thee, as he was with my fadir. |
May the Lord do so and so to Jonathan and add still more. But if my father shall continue in malice against thee, I will discover it to thy ear, and will send thee away, that thou mayest go in peace, and the Lord be with thee, as he hath been with my father. | |
| 14 | Et si vixero, facies mihi misericordiam Domini: si vero mortuus fuero, |
And if Y lyue, do thou the mercies of the Lord to me; |
And if I live, thou shalt shew me the kindness of the Lord: but if I die, | |
| 15 | non auferes misericordiam tuam a domo mea usque in sempiternum, quando eradicaverit Dominus inimicos David, unumquemque de terra: auferat Jonathan de domo sua, et requirat Dominus de manu inimicorum David. |
forsothe if Y am deed, thou schalt not take awei thi mercy fro myn hows til in to with outen ende; and yif Y do it not, whanne the Lord schal drawe out bi the roote the enemyes of Dauid, ech man fro the lond, take he awei Jonathas fro his hows, and seke the Lord of the hond of the enemyes of Dauid. |
Thou shalt not take away thy kindness from my house for ever, when the Lord shall have rooted out the enemies of David, every one of them from the earth, may he take away Jonathan from his house, and may the Lord require it at the hands of David's enemies. | |
| 16 | Pepigit ergo Jonathas fœdus cum domo David: et requisivit Dominus de manu inimicorum David. |
Therfor Jonathas made boond of pees with the hows of Dauid, and the Lord souyte of the hond of enemyes of Dauid. |
Jonathan therefore made a covenant with the house of David: and the Lord required it at the hands of David's enemies. | |
| 17 | Et addidit Jonathas dejerare David, eo quod diligeret illum: sicut enim animam suam, ita diligebat eum. |
And Jonathas addide to swere stedfastli to Dauid, for he louyde Dauid; for he louyde so Dauid, as his owne soule. |
And Jonathan swore again to David, because he loved him: for he loved him as his own soul. | |
| 18 | Dixitque ad eum Jonathas: Cras calendæ sunt, et requireris: |
And Jonathas seide to hym, Calendis ben to morewe, and thou schalt be souyt; |
And Jonathan said to him: To morrow is the new moon, and thou wilt be missed: | |
| 19 | requiretur enim sessio tua usque perendie. Descendes ergo festinus, et venies in locum ubi celandus es in die qua operari licet, et sedebis juxta lapidem cui nomen est Ezel. |
for thi sittyng schal be souyt til after to morewe. Therfor thou schalt go doun hastili, and thou schalt come in to the place, where thou schalt be hid in the day, whanne it is leueful to worche; and thou schalt sitte bisidis the stoon, to which the name is Ezel. |
For thy seat will be empty till after tomorrow. So thou shalt go down quickly, and come to the place, where thou must be hid on the day when it is lawful to work, and thou shalt remain beside the stone, which is called Ezel. | |
| 20 | Et ego tres sagittas mittam juxta eum, et jaciam quasi exercens me ad signum. |
And Y schal sende thre arowis bisidis that stoon, and Y schal caste as excercisynge ether pleiynge me at a signe. |
And I will shoot three arrows near it, and will shoot as if I were exercising myself at a mark. | |
| 21 | Mittam quoque et puerum, dicens ei: Vade, et affer mihi sagittas. |
Y schal sende also and my child, and Y schal seie to hym, Go thou, and brynge to me the arewis. |
And I will send a boy, saying to him: Go and fetch me the arrows. | |
| 22 | Si dixero puero : Ecce sagittæ intra te sunt, tolle eas : tu veni ad me, quia pax tibi est, et nihil est mali, vivit Dominus. Si autem sic locutus fuero puero : Ecce sagittæ ultra te sunt : vade in pace, quia dimisit te Dominus. |
If Y seie to the child, Lo! the arewis ben with ynne thee, take thou tho; come thou to me, for pees is to thee, and no thing is of yuel, the Lord lyueth. Sotheli if Y speke thus to the child, Lo! the arowis ben biyende thee; go thou in pees, for the Lord deliuerede thee. |
If I shall say to the boy: Behold the arrows are on this side of thee, take them up: come thou to me, because, there is peace to thee, and there is no evil, as the Lord liveth. But if I shall speak thus to the boy: Behold the arrows are beyond thee: go in peace, for the Lord hath sent thee away. | |
| 23 | De verbo autem quod locuti sumus ego et tu, sit Dominus inter me et te usque in sempiternum. |
Forsothe of the word, which thou and Y han spoke, the Lord be bitwixe me and thee til in to with outen ende. |
And concerning the word which I and thou have spoken, the Lord be between thee and me for ever. | |
| 24 | Absconditus est ergo David in agro, et venerunt calendæ, et sedit rex ad comedendum panem. |
Therfor Dauid was hid in the feeld; and the calendis camen, and the kyng sat to ete breed. |
So David was hid in the field, and the new moon came, and the king sat down to eat bread. | |
| 25 | Cumque sedisset rex super cathedram suam (secundum consuetudinem) quæ erat juxta parietem, surrexit Jonathas, et sedit Abner ex latere Saul: vacuusque apparuit locus David. |
And whanne the kyng hadde seete on his chaier bi custom, which chaier was bisidis the wal, Jonathas roos, and sat aftir Abner, and Abner sat at the side of Saul, and the place of Dauid apperide voide. |
And when the king sat down upon his chair (according to custom) which was beside the wall, Jonathan arose, and Abner sat by Saul's side, and David's place appeared empty. | |
| 26 | Et non est locutus Saul quidquam in die illa: cogitabat enim quod forte evenisset ei, ut non esset mundus, nec purificatus. |
And Saul spak not ony thing in that dai; for he thouyte, that in hap it bifelde to hym, that he was not clene nether purified. |
And Saul said nothing that day, for he thought it might have happened to him, that he was not clean, nor purified. | |
| 27 | Cumque illuxisset dies secunda post calendas, rursus apparuit vacuus locus David. Dixitque Saul ad Jonatham filium suum : Cur non venit filius Isai, nec heri, nec hodie ad vescendum ? |
And whanne the secounde dai aftir the calendis hadde schyned, eft the place of Dauid apperide voide. And Saul seide to Jonathas his sone, Whi cometh not the sone of Isai, nether yisterdai, nether to dai to ete? |
And when the second day after the new moon was come, David's place appeared empty again. And Saul said to Jonathan his son: Why cometh not the son of Isai to meat neither yesterday nor to day? | |
| 28 | Responditque Jonathas Sauli: Rogavit me obnixe ut iret in Bethlehem, |
And Jonathas answeride to Saul, He preiede me mekeli, that he schulde go in to Bethleem; |
And Jonathan answered Saul: He asked leave of me earnestly to go to Bethlehem, | |
| 29 | et ait: Dimitte me, quoniam sacrificium solemne est in civitate, unus de fratribus meis accersivit me: nunc ergo si inveni gratiam in oculis tuis, vadam cito, et videbo fratres meos. Ob hanc causam non venit ad mensamregis. |
and he seide, Suffre thou me, for solempne sacrifice is in my citee; oon of my britheren clepide me; now therfor if Y foond grace in thin iyen, Y schal go soone, and Y schal se my britheren; for this cause he cometh not to the table of the kyng. |
And he said: Let me go, for there is a solemn sacrifice in the city, one of my brethren hath sent for me: and now if I have found favour in thy eyes, I will go quickly, and see my brethren. For this cause he came not to the king's table. | |
| 30 | Iratus autem Saul adversum Jonathan, dixit ei: Fili mulieris virum ultro rapientis, numquid ignoro quia diligis filium Isai in confusionem tuam, et in confusionem ignominiosæ matris tuæ? |
Forsothe Saul was wrooth ayens Jonathas, and seide to hym, Thou sone of a womman rauyschynge at her owne wille a man, whether Y woot not, that thou louest the sone of Ysay in to thi confusioun, and in to the confusioun of thi schendful modir? |
Then Saul being angry against Jonathan said to him: Thou son of a woman that is the ravisher of a man, do I not know that thou lovest the son of Isai to thy own confusion and to the confusion of thy shameless mother? | |
| 31 | Omnibus enim diebus quibus filius Isai vixerit super terram, non stabilieris tu, neque regnum tuum. Itaque jam nunc mitte, et adduc eum ad me: quia filius mortis est. |
For in alle the daies in whiche the sone of Isai lyueth on erthe, thou schalt not be stablischid, nether thi rewme; therfor riyt now sende thou, and brynge hym to me, for he is the sone of deeth. |
For as long as the son of Isai liveth upon earth, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom. Therefore now presently send, and fetch him to me: for he is the son of death. | |
| 32 | Respondens autem Jonathas Sauli patri suo, ait: Quare morietur? quid fecit? |
Sotheli Jonathas answeride to Saul his fadir, and seide, Whi schal he die? what hath he do? |
And Jonathan answering Saul his father, said: Why shall he die: what hath he done? | |
| 33 | Et arripuit Saul lanceam ut percuteret eum. Et intellexit Jonathas quod definitum esset a patre suo, ut interficeret David. |
And Saul took the spere, that he schulde smyte hym, and Jonathas vndirstood, that it was determynd of his fadir, that Dauid schulde be slayn. |
And Saul caught up a spear to strike him. And Jonathan understood that it was determined by his father to kill David. | |
| 34 | Surrexit ergo Jonathas a mensa in ira furoris, et non comedit in die calendarum secunda panem. Contristatus est enim super David, eo quod confudisset eum pater suus. |
Therfor Jonathas roos fro the table in the ire of woodnesse, and he ete not breed in the secounde dai of calendis; for he was sori on Dauid, for his fadir hadde schent him. |
So Jonathan rose from the table in great anger, and did not eat bread on the second day after the new moon. For he was grieved for David, because his father had put him to confusion. | |
| 35 | Cumque illuxisset mane, venit Jonathas in agrum juxta placitum David, et puer parvulus cum eo. |
And whanne the morewtid hadde schyned, Jonathas cam in to the feeld, and a litil child with hym, bi the couenaunt of Dauid. |
And when the morning came, Jonathan went into the field, according to the appointment with David, and a little boy with him. | |
| 36 | Et ait ad puerum suum: Vade, et affer mihi sagittas quas ego jacio. Cumque puer cucurrisset, jecit aliam sagittam trans puerum. |
And Jonathas seide to his child, Go thou, and brynge to me the arowis whiche Y caste. And whanne the child hadde runne, he castide another arowe biyende the child. |
And he said to his boy: Go, and fetch me the arrows which I shoot. And when the boy ran, he shot another arrow beyond the boy. | |
| 37 | Venit itaque puer ad locum jaculi quod miserat Jonathas: et clamavit Jonathas post tergum pueri, et ait: Ecce ibi est sagitta porro ultra te. |
Therfor the child cam to the place of the arowe which Jonathas hadde sent; and Jonathas criede bihynde the bak of the child, and seide, Lo! the arowe is not there, certis it is biyende thee. |
The boy therefore came to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot: and Jonathan cried after the boy, and said: Behold the arrow is there further beyond thee. | |
| 38 | Clamavitque iterum Jonathas post tergum pueri, dicens: Festina velociter, ne steteris. Collegit autem puer Jonathæ sagittas, et attulit ad dominum suum: |
And Jonathas criede eft bihynde the bak of the child, and seide, Haste thou swiftli, stonde thou not. Therfor the child gaderide the arowis of Jonathas, and brouyte to his lord, |
And Jonathan cried again after the boy, saying: Make haste speedily, stand not. And Jonathan's boy gathered up the arrows, and brought them to his master: | |
| 39 | et quid ageretur, penitus ignorabat, tantummodo enim Jonathas et David rem noverant. |
and outerli he wiste not what was doon; for oonli Jonathas and Dauid knewen the thing. |
And he knew not at all what was doing: for only Jonathan and David knew the matter. | |
| 40 | Dedit ergo Jonathas arma sua puero, et dixit ei: Vade, et defer in civitatem. |
Therfor Jonathas yaf hise armeris to the child, and seide to hym, Go thou, bere in to the citee. |
Jonathan therefore gave his arms to the boy, and said to him: Go, and carry them into the city. | |
| 41 | Cumque abiisset puer, surrexit David de loco qui vergebat ad austrum, et cadens pronus in terram, adoravit tertio: et osculantes se alterutrum, fleverunt pariter, David autem amplius. |
And whanne the child hadde go, Dauid roos fro the place that yede to the south; and he felde low in to the erthe, and worschipide the thridde tyme, and thei kissiden hem silf to gidere, and wepten to gidere; forsothe Dauid wepte more. |
And when the boy was gone, David rose out of his place, which was towards the south, and falling on his face to the ground, adored thrice: and kissing one another, they wept together, but David more. | |
| 42 | Dixit ergo Jonathas ad David: Vade in pace: quæcumque juravimus ambo in nomine Domini, dicentes: Dominus sit inter me et te, et inter semen meum et semen tuum usque in sempiternum. |
Therfor Jonathas seide to Dauid, Go thou in pees; what euer thingis we bothe han swoore in the name of the Lord, and seiden, The Lord be bitwixe me and thee, and bitwixe my seed and thi seed til in to with outen ende, be stidfast. And Dauid roos, and yede, but also Jonathas entride in to the citee. |
And Jonathan said to David: Go in peace: and let all stand that we have sworn both of us in the name of the Lord, saying: The Lord be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever. | |
| 43 | Et surrexit David, et abiit: sed et Jonathas ingressus est civitatem. |

And David arose, and departed: and Jonathan went into the city. | |
| 1 | Venit autem David in Nobe ad Achimelech sacerdotem: et obstupuit Achimelech, eo quod venisset David. Et dixit ei: Quare tu solus, et nullus est tecum? |
Forsothe Dauid cam in to Nobe to Achimelech preest; and Achymelech wondrid, for Dauid hadde come; and he seide to Dauid, Whi art thou aloone, and no man is with thee? |
And David came to Nobe to Achimelech the priest: and Achimelech was astonished at David's coming. And he said to him: Why art thou alone, and no man with thee? | David's flight from Saul. 1Sm.21.1-26.25 |

And Dauid seide to Achymelech preest, The kyng comaundide to me a word, and seide, No man wite the thing, for which thou art sent fro me, and what maner comaundementis Y yaf to thee; for Y seide also to children, that thei schulden go in to that and that place; |
And David said to Achimelech the priest: The king hath commanded me a business, and said: Let no man know the thing for which thou art sent by me, and what manner of commands I have given thee: and I have appointed my servants to such and such a place. | |
| 3 | Nunc ergo si quid habes ad manum, vel quinque panes, da mihi, aut quidquid inveneris. |
now therfor if thou hast ony thing at hond, ether fyue looues, yyue thou to me, ether what euer thing thou fyndist. |
Now therefore if thou have any thing at hand, though it were but five loaves, give me, or whatsoever thou canst find. | |
| 4 | Et respondens sacerdos ad David, ait illi: Non habeo laicos panes ad manum, sed tantum panem sanctum: si mundi sunt pueri, maxime a mulieribus? |
And the preest answeride to Dauid, and seide to hym, Y haue not lewid, that is, comyn, looues at hoond, but oneli hooli breed; whether the children ben clene, and moost of wymmen? |
And the priest answered David, saying: I have no common bread at hand, but only holy bread, if the young men be clean, especially from women? | |
| 5 | Et respondit David sacerdoti, et dixit ei : Equidem, si de mulieribus agitur : continuimus nos ab heri et nudiustertius, quando egrediebamur, et fuerunt vasa puerorum sancta. Porro via hæc polluta est, sed et ipsa hodie sanctificabitur in vasis. |
And Dauid answeride to the preest, and seide to hym, And sotheli if it is doon of wymmen, we absteyneden vs fro yistirdai and the thridde dai ago, whanne we yeden out, and the vessels, that is, bodies, of the children weren cleene; forsothe this weie is defoulyd, but also that schal be halewid to dai in the vessels. |
And David answered the priest, and said to him: Truly, as to what concerneth women, we have refrained ourselves from yesterday and the day before, when we came out, and the vessels of the young men were holy. Now this way is defiled, but it shall also be sanctified this day in the vessels. | |
| 6 | Dedit ergo ei sacerdos sanctificatum panem: neque enim erat ibi panis, nisi tantum panes propositionis, qui sublati fuerant a facie Domini, ut ponerentur panes calidi. |
Therfor the preest yaf to hym halewid breed, for noon other breed was there, no but oneli looues of settyng forth, that weren takun awey fro the face of the Lord, that hoote looues schulen be set. |
The priest therefore gave him hallowed bread: for there was no bread there, but only the loaves of proposition, which had been taken away from before the face of the Lord, that hot loaves might be set up. | |
| 7 | Erat autem ibi vir quidam de servis Saul in die illa, intus in tabernaculo Domini: et nomen ejus Doëg Idumæus, potentissimus pastorum Saul. |
Forsothe sum man of the seruauntis of Saul was there with ynne in the tabernacle of the Lord; and his name was Doech of Ydumee, the myytiest of the scheepherdis, that is, iugis, of Saul. |
Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, within the tabernacle of the Lord: and his name was Doeg, an Edomite, the chiefest of Saul's herdsmen. | |
| 8 | Dixit autem David ad Achimelech : Si habes hic ad manum hastam, aut gladium ? quia gladium meum, et arma mea non tuli mecum : sermo enim regis urgebat. |
Forsothe Dauid seide to Achymelech, If thou hast here at hond spere, ether swerd, yyue to me; for Y took not with me my swerd and myn armeris; for the word of the kyng constreynede me. |
And David said to Achimelech: Hast thou here at hand a spear, or a sword? for I brought not my own sword, nor my own weapons with me, for the king's business required haste. | |
| 9 | Et dixit sacerdos : Ecce hic gladius Goliath Philisthæi, quem percussisti in Valle terebinthi, est involutus pallio post ephod : si istum vis tollere, tolle : neque enim hic est alius absque eo. Et ait David : Non est huic alter similis, da mihi eum. |
And the preest seide, Lo! here the swerd of Goliath Filistei, whom thou killidst in the valey of Terebynte, is wlappid in a cloth aftir ephoth; if thou wolt take this, take thou; for here is noon other outakun that. And Dauid seide, Noon other is lijk this, yyue thou it to me. |
And the priest said: Lo, here is the sword of Goliath the Philistine whom thou slewest in the valley of Terebinth, wrapped up in a cloth behind the ephod: if thou wilt take this, take it, for here is no other but this. And David said: There is none like that, give it me. | |
| 10 | Surrexit itaque David, et fugit in die illa a facie Saul: et venit ad Achis regem Geth. |
Therfor Dauid roos, and fledde in that dai fro the face of Saul, and cam to Achis, the kyng of Geth. |
And David arose and fled that day from the face of Saul: and came to Achis the king of Geth: | |
| 11 | Dixeruntque servi Achis ad eum cum vidissent David: Numquid non iste est David rex terræ? nonne huic cantabant per choros, dicentes:
Percussit Saul mille, et David decem millia? |
And the seruauntis of Achis seiden to hym, whanne thei hadden seyn Dauid, Whether this is not Dauid, kyng of the lond? Whether thei sungen not to hym bi queeris, and seiden, Saul smoot a thousynde, and Dauid smoot ten thousynde? |
And the servants of Achis, when they saw David, said to him: Is not this David the king of the land? Did they not sing to him in their dances, saying: Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands? | |
| 12 | Posuit autem David sermones istos in corde suo, et extimuit valde a facie Achis regis Geth. |
Sotheli Dauid puttide these wordis in his herte, and he dredde greetli of the face of Achis, kyng of Geth. |
But David laid up these words in his heart, and was exceedingly afraid at the face of Achis the king of Geth. | |
| 13 | Et immutavit os suum coram eis, et collabebatur inter manus eorum: et impingebat in ostia portæ, defluebantque salivæ ejus in barbam. |
And Dauid chaungide his mouth bifor Achis, and felde doun bitwixe her hondis, and he hurtlide ayens the doris of the yate, and his drauelis, that is, spotelis, flowiden doun in to the beerd. |
And he changed his countenance before them, and slipt down between their hands: and he stumbled against the doors of the gate, and his spittle ran down upon his beard. | |
| 14 | Et ait Achis ad servos suos: Vidistis hominem insanum: quare adduxistis eum ad me? |
And Achis seide to hise seruauntis, Seen ye the wood man? why brouyten ye hym to me? whether wood men failen to vs? whi han ye brouyt in hym, that he schulde be wood, while Y am present? Delyuere ye hym fro hennus, lest he entre in to myn hows. |
And Achis said to his servants: You saw the man was mad: why have you brought him to me? | |
| 15 | an desunt nobis furiosi, quod introduxistis istum, ut fureret me præsente? hiccine ingredietur domum meam? |

Have we need of madmen, that you have brought in this fellow, to play the madman in my presence? shall this fellow come into my house? | |
