And Moises seide to Heliab, the sone of Raguel, of Madian, his alie ethir fadir of his wijf, We goon forth to the place which the Lord schal yyue to vs; come thou with vs, that we do wel to thee, for the Lord bihiyte goode thingis to Israel. |
And Moses said to Hobab the son of Raguel the Madianite, his kinsman: We are going towards the place which the Lord will give us: come with us, that we may do thee good : for the Lord hath promised good things to Israel. | |
30 | Cui ille respondit: Non vadam tecum, sed revertar in terram meam, in qua natus sum. |
To whom he answeride, Y schal not go with thee, but Y schal turne ayen in to my lond, in which Y was borun. |
But he answered him: I will not go with thee, but I will return to my country, wherein I was born. | |
31 | Et ille: Noli, inquit, nos relinquere: tu enim nosti in quibus locis per desertum castra ponere debeamus, et eris ductor noster. |
And Moises seide, Nyle thou forsake vs, for thou knowist in whiche places we owen to sette tentis, and thou schalt be oure ledere; |
And he said: Do not leave us: for thou knowest in what places we should encamp in the wilderness, and thou shalt be our guide. | |
32 | Cumque nobiscum veneris, quidquid optimum fuerit ex opibus, quas nobis traditurus est Dominus, dabimus tibi. |
and whanne thou schalt come with vs, what euer thing schal be the beste of the richessis whiche the Lord schal yyue to vs, we schulen yyue to thee. |
And if thou comest with us, we will give thee what is the best of the riches which the Lord shall deliver to us. | |
33 | Profecti sunt ergo de monte Domini viam trium dierum, arcaque fœderis Domini præcedebat eos, per dies tres providens castrorum locum. |
And therfor thei yeden forth fro the hil of the Lord the weie of thre daies; and the arke of boond of pees of the Lord yede bifor hem, bi thre daies, and purueyde the place of tentis. |

And when the ark was lifted up, Moses said: Arise, O Lord, and let thy enemies be scattered, and let them that hate thee, flee from before thy face. | |
36 | Cum autem deponeretur, aiebat: Revertere, Domine, ad multitudinem exercitus Israël. |
forsothe whanne the arke was put doun, he seide, Lord, turne ayen to the multitude of the oost of Israel. |
And when it was set down, he said: Return, O Lord, to the multitude of the host of Israel. | |

Yn the meene tyme the grutchyng of the puple, as of men sorewynge for trauel, roos ayens the Lord. And whanne Moises hadde herd this thing, he was wrooth; and the fier of the Lord was kyndelid on hem, and deuouride the laste part of the tentis. |
In the mean time there arose a murmuring of the people against the Lord, as it were repining at their fatigue. And when the Lord heard it he was angry. And the fire of the Lord being kindled against them, devoured them that were at the uttermost part of the camp. | Taberah. Nu.11.1-3 |

And whanne the puple hadde cried to Moises, Moises preiede the Lord, and the fier was quenchid. |
And when the people cried to Moses, Moses prayed to the Lord, and the fire was swallowed up. | |
3 | Vocavitque nomen loci illius, Incensio: eo quod incensus fuisset contra eos ignis Domini. |
And he clepid the name of that place Brennyng, for the fier of the Lord was kyndlid ayens hem. |
And he called the name of that place, The burning: for that the fire of the Lord had been kindled against them. | |

Our soul is dry, our eyes behold nothing else but manna. | |
7 | Erat autem man quasi semen coriandri, coloris bdellii. |
Forsothe manna was as the seed of coriaundre, of the colour of bdellyum, which is whijt and briyt as cristal. |
A Now the manna was like coriander seed, of the colour of bdellium. | |
8 | Circuibatque populus, et colligens illud, frangebat mola, sive terebat in mortario, coquens in olla, et faciens ex eo tortulas saporis quasi panis oleati. |
And the puple yede aboute, and gaderide it, and brak with a queerne stoon, ether pownede in a morter, and sethide in a pot; and made therof litle cakis of the sauour, as of breed maad with oile. |
And the people went about, and gathering it, ground it in a mill, or beat it in a mortar, and boiled it in a pot, and made cakes thereof of the taste of bread tempered with oil. | |
9 | Cumque descenderet nocte super castra ros, descendebat pariter et man. |
And whanne dew cam doun in the niyt on the tentis, also manna cam doun togidere. |
and when the dew fell in the night upon the camp, the manna also fell with it. | |
10 | Audivit ergo Moyses flentem populum per familias, singulos per ostia tentorii sui. Iratusque est furor Domini valde: sed et Moysi intoleranda res visa est, |
Therfor Moises herde the puple wepynge bi meynees, and alle bi hem silf bi the doris of her tentis; and the woodnesse of the Lord was wrooth greetli, but also the thing was seyn vnsuffrable to Moises. |
Now Moses heard the people weeping by their families, every one at the door of his tent. And the wrath of the Lord was exceedingly enkindled: to Moses also the thing seemed insupportable. | |
11 | et ait ad Dominum: Cur afflixisti servum tuum? quare non invenio gratiam coram te? et cur imposuisti pondus universi populi hujus super me? |
And he seide to the Lord, Whi hast thou turmentid thi seruaunt? whi fynde Y not grace bifor thee? and whi hast thou put on me the burthun of al this puple? |
And he said to the Lord: Why hast thou afflicted thy servant? wherefore do I not find favour before thee? and why hast thou laid the weight of all this people upon me ? | |
12 | Numquid ego concepi omnem hanc multitudinem, vel genui eam, ut dicas mihi: Porta eos in sinu tuo sicut portare solet nutrix infantulum, et defer in terram, pro qua jurasti patribus eorum? |
whethir Y conseyuede al this multitude, ethir gendride it, that thou seie to me, Bere thou hem in thi bosum as a nurise is wont to bere a litil yong child, and bere thou in to the lond for which thou hast swore to the fadris of hem. |
Have I conceived all this multitude, or begotten them, that thou shouldst say to me: Carry them in thy bosom as the nurse is wont to carry the little infant, and bear them into the land, for which thou hast sworn to their fathers? | |
13 | Unde mihi carnes ut dem tantæ multitudini? flent contra me, dicentes: Da nobis carnes ut comedamus. |
wherof ben fleischis to me, that Y yyue to so greet multitude? Thei wepen bifore me, and seyn, Yyue thou fleischis to vs that we ete; |
Whence should I have flesh to give to so great a multitude? they weep against me, saying: Give us flesh that we may eat. | |
14 | Non possum solus sustinere omnem hunc populum, quia gravis est mihi. |
I mai not aloone suffre al this puple, for it is greuouse to me. |
I am not able alone to bear all this people, because it is too heavy for me. | |
15 | Sin aliter tibi videtur, obsecro ut interficias me, et inveniam gratiam in oculis tuis, ne tantis afficiar malis. |
If in other maner it semeth to thee, Y biseche that thou sle me, and that Y fynde grace in thin iyen, that Y be not punyschid bi so grete yuelis. |
But if it seem unto thee otherwise, I beseech thee to kill me, and let me find grace in thy eyes, that I be not afflicted with so great evils. | |
16 | Et dixit Dominus ad Moysen: Congrega mihi septuaginta viros de senibus Israël, quos tu nosti quod senes populi sint ac magistri: et duces eos ad ostium tabernaculi fœderis, faciesque ibi stare tecum, |
And the Lord seide to Moises, Gadere thou to me seuenti men of the eldre men of Israel, whiche thou knowist, that thei ben the elde men and maistris of the puple; and thou schalt lede hem to the dore of the tabernacle of boond of pees, and thou schalt make to stonde there with thee, |
And the Lord said to Moses: Gather unto me seventy men of the ancients of Israel, whom thou knowest to be ancients and masters of the people: and thou shalt bring them to the door of the tabernacle of the covenant, and shalt make them stand there with thee, | |
17 | ut descendam et loquar tibi: et auferam de spiritu tuo, tradamque eis, ut sustentent tecum onus populi, et non tu solus graveris. |
that Y come doun, and speke to thee; and Y schal take awey of thi spirit, and Y schal yyue to hem, that thei susteyne with thee the birthun of the puple, and not thou aloone be greuyd. |
That I may come down and speak with thee: and I will take of thy spirit, and will give to them, that they may bear with thee the burden of the people, and thou mayest not be burthened alone. | |
18 | Populo quoque dices: Sanctificamini (cras comedetis carnes: ego enim audivi vos dicere: Quis dabit nobis escas carnium? bene nobis erat in Ægypto), ut det vobis Dominus carnes, et comedatis: |
And thou schalt seie to the puple, Be ye halewid; to morew ye schulen ete fleischis; for Y herde you seie, Who schal yyue to vs the metis of fleischis? it was wel to vs in Egipt; that the Lord yyue fleischis to you, |
And thou shalt say to the people: Be ye sanctified : to morrow you shall eat flesh: for I have heard you say: Who will give us flesh to eat? it was well with us in Egypt. That the Lord may give you flesh, and you may eat: | |
19 | non uno die, nec duobus, vel quinque aut decem, nec viginti quidem, |
and that ye ete not o dai, ethir tweyne, ethir fyue, ethir ten, sotheli nether twenti, |
Not for one day, nor two, nor five, nor ten, no nor for twenty. | |
20 | sed usque ad mensem dierum, donec exeat per nares vestras, et vertatur in nauseam, eo quod replueritis Dominum, qui in medio vestri est, et fleveritis coram eo, dicentes: Quare egressi sumus ex Ægypto? |
but til to a monethe of daies, til it go out bi youre nosethirlis, and turne in to wlatyng; for ye han put awei the Lord, which is in the myddis of you, and ye wepten bifor hym, and seiden, Whi yeden we out of Egipt? |
But even for a month of days, till it come out at your nostrils, and become loathsome to you, because you have cast off the Lord, who is in the midst of you, and have wept before him, saying: Why came we out of Egypt? | |
21 | Et ait Moyses: Sexcenta millia peditum hujus populi sunt: et tu dicis: Dabo eis esum carnium mense integro? |
And Moises seide to the Lord, Sixe hundrid thousynde of foot men ben of this puple, and thou seist, Y schal yyue to hem mete of fleischis an hool monethe. |
And Moses said: There are six hundred thousand footmen of this people, and sayest thou: I will give them flesh to eat a whole month? | |
22 | numquid ovium et boum multitudo cædetur, ut possit sufficere ad cibum? vel omnes pisces maris in unum congregabuntur, ut eos satient? |
Whether the multitude of scheep and of oxun schal be slayn, that it may suffice to mete, ethir alle the fischis of the see schulen be gaderid to gidere, that tho fille hem? |
Shall then a multitude of sheep and oxen be killed, that it may suffice for their food? or shall the fishes of the sea be gathered together to fill them? | |
23 | Cui respondit Dominus: Numquid manus Domini invalida est? jam nunc videbis utrum meus sermo opere compleatur. |
To whom the Lord answeride, Whether the hond of the Lord is vnmyyti? riyt now thou schalt se, wher my word schal be fillid in werk. |
And the Lord answered him: Is the hand of the Lord unable? Thou shalt presently see whether my word shall come to pass or no. | |
24 | Venit igitur Moyses, et narravit populo verba Domini, congregans septuaginta viros de senibus Israël, quos stare fecit circa tabernaculum. |
Therfor Moises cam, and telde to the puple the wordis of the Lord; and he gaderide seuenti men of the eldere of Israel, whiche he made stonde aboute the tabernacle. |
Moses therefore came, and told the people the words of the Lord, and assembled seventy men of the ancients of Israel, and made them to stand about the tabernacle. | |
25 | Descenditque Dominus per nubem, et locutus est ad eum, auferens de spiritu qui erat in Moyse, et dans septuaginta viris. Cumque requievisset in eis spiritus, prophetaverunt, nec ultra cessaverunt. |
And the Lord cam doun bi a cloude, and spak to Moises, and took a weye of the spirit that was in Moises, and yaf to the seuenti men; and whanne the spirit hadde restid in hem, thei profesieden, and ceessiden not aftirward. |
And the Lord came down in a cloud, and spoke to him, taking away of the spirit that was in Moses, and giving to the seventy men. And when the spirit had rested on them they prophesied, nor did they cease afterwards. | |
26 | Remanserat autem in castris duo viri, quorum unus vocabatur Eldad, et alter Medad, super quos requievit spiritus. Nam et ipsi descripti fuerant, et non exierant ad tabernaculum. |
Forsothe twei men dwelliden stille in the tentis, of whiche men oon was clepid Heldad, and the tothir Medad, on whiche the spirit restide; for also thei weren descryued, and thei yeden not out to the tabernacle. |
Now there remained in the camp two of the men, of whom one was called Eldad, and the other Medad, upon whom the spirit rested; for they also had been enrolled, but were not gone forth to the tabernacle. | |
27 | Cumque prophetarent in castris, cucurrit puer, et nuntiavit Moysi, dicens: Eldad et Medad prophetant in castris. |
And whanne thei profesieden in the tentis, a child ran, and teld to Moises, and seide, Heldad and Medad profecien in the tentis. |
And when they prophesied in the camp, there ran a young man, and told Moses, saying: Eldad and Medad prophesy in the camp. | |
28 | Statim Josue filius Nun, minister Moysi, et electus e pluribus, ait: Domine mi Moyses, prohibe eos. |
Anoon Josue, the sone of Nun, the mynystre of Moises, and chosun of manye, seide, My lord Moises, forbede thou hem. |
Forthwith Josue the son of Nun, the minister of Moses, and chosen out of many, said: My lord Moses forbid them. | |
29 | At ille: Quid, inquit æmularis pro me? quis tribuat ut omnis populus prophetet, et det eis Dominus spiritum suum? |
And he seide, What hast thou enuye for me? who yyueth that al the puple profesie, and that God yyue his spirit to hem? |
But he said: Why hast thou emulation for me? O that all the people might prophesy, and that the Lord would give them his spirit! | |
30 | Reversusque est Moyses, et majores natu Israël in castra. |
And Moises turnede ayen, and the eldre men in birthe of Israel in to the tentis. |
And Moses returned, with the ancients of Israel, into the camp. | |
31 | Ventus autem egrediens a Domino, arreptans trans mare coturnices detulit, et demisit in castra itinere quantum uno die confici potest, ex omni parte castrorum per circuitum, volabantque in aëre duobus cubitis altitudine super terram. |
Forsothe a wynde yede forth fro the Lord, and took curlewis, and bar ouer the see, and lefte in to the tentis, in the iurney, as myche as mai be parformed in o day, bi ech part of the tentis bi cumpas; and tho flowen in the eir bi twei cubitis in hiynesse ouer the erthe. |
And a wind going out from the Lord, taking quails up beyond the sea brought them, and cast them into the camp for the space of one day's journey, on every side of the camp round about, and they flew in the air two cubits high above the ground. | Quails. Nu.11.31-35 |
32 | Surgens ergo populus toto die illo, et nocte, ac die altero, congregavit coturnicum: qui parum, decem coros: et siccaverunt eas per gyrum castrorum. |
Therfor the puple roos in al that dai and nyyt and in to the tothir dai, and gaderide the multitude of curlewis; he that gaderide litil, gaderide ten mesuris clepid chorus; and o chorus conteyneth ten buschels; and thei drieden tho curlewis bi the cumpas of the tentis. |
The people therefore rising up all that day, and night, and the next day, gathered together of quails, he that did least, ten cores: and they dried them round about the camp. | |
33 | Adhuc carnes erant in dentibus eorum, nec defecerat hujuscemodi cibus: et ecce furor Domini concitatus in populum, percussit eum plaga magna nimis. |
Yit fleischis weren in the teeth of hem, and siche mete failide not; and lo! the woodnesse of the Lord was reisid ayens the puple, and smoot it with a ful greet veniaunce. |
As yet the flesh was between their teeth, neither had that kind of meat failed: when behold the wrath of the Lord being provoked against the people, struck them with an exceeding great plague. | |
34 | Vocatusque est ille locus, Sepulchra concupiscentiæ: ibi enim sepelierunt populum qui desideraverat. Egressi autem de Sepulchris concupiscentiæ, venerunt in Haseroth, et manserunt ibi. |
And thilke place was clepid The sepulcris of coueitise, for there thei birieden the puple that desiride fleischis. Sotheli thei yeden out of the sepulcris of coueitise, and camen in to Asseroth, and dwelliden there. |
And that place was called, The graves of lust: for there they buried the people that had lusted. And departing from the graves of lust, they came unto Haseroth, and abode there. | |

And anoon the Lord spak to Moises and to Aaron and to Marye, Go out ye thre aloone to the tabernacle of boond of pees. And whanne thei weren gon yn, |
Immediately he spoke to him, and to Aaron and Mary: Come out you three only to the tabernacle of the covenant. And when they were come out, | |
5 | descendit Dominus in columna nubis, et stetit in introitu tabernaculi, vocans Aaron et Mariam. Qui cum issent, |
the Lord cam doun in a piler of cloude, and he stood in the entryng of the tabernacle, and clepide Aaron and Marie. |
The Lord came down in a pillar of the cloud, and stood in the entry of the tabernacle calling to Aaron and Mary. And when they were come, | |
6 | dixit ad eos: Audite sermones meos: si quis fuerit inter vos propheta Domini, in visione apparebo ei, vel per somnium loquar ad illum. |
And whanne thei hadden go, he seide to hem, Here ye my wordis; if ony among you is a profete of the Lord, Y schal appere to hym in reuelacioun, ethir Y schal speke to hym bi a dreem. |
He said to them: Hear my words: if there be among you a prophet of the Lord, I will appear to him in a vision, or I will speak to him in a dream. | |
7 | At non talis servus meus Moyses, qui in omni domo mea fidelissimus est: |
And he seide, And my seruaunt Moises is not siche, which is moost feithful in al myn hows; |
But it is not so with my servant Moses a who is most faithful in all my house: | |
8 | ore enim ad os loquor ei: et palam, et non per ænigmata et figuras Dominum videt. Quare ergo non timuistis detrahere servo meo Moysi? |
for Y speke to hym mouth to mouth, and he seeth God opynli, and not bi derke spechis and figuris. Why therfor dredden ye not to bacbite ether depraue my seruaunt Moises? |
For I speak to him mouth to mouth: and plainly, and not by riddles and figures doth he see the Lord. Why then were you not afraid to speak ill of my servant Moses? | |
9 | Iratusque contra eos, abiit: |
And the Lord was wrooth ayens hem, and he wente a wei. |
And being angry with them he went away: | |
10 | nubes quoque recessit quæ erat super tabernaculum: et ecce Maria apparuit candens lepra quasi nix. Cumque respexisset eam Aaron, et vidisset perfusam lepra, |
And the cloude yede awei, that was on the tabernacle and lo! Marie apperide whijt with lepre as snow. And whanne Aaron biheelde hir, and siy hir bispreynd with lepre, |
The cloud also that was over the tabernacle departed: and behold Mary appeared white as snow with a leprosy. And when Aaron had looked on her, and saw her all covered with leprosy, | |
11 | ait ad Moysen: Obsecro, domine mi, ne imponas nobis hoc peccatum quod stulte commisimus, |
he seide to Moises, My lord, Y beseche, putte thou not this synne on vs, |
He said to Moses: I beseech thee, my lord, lay not upon us this sin, which we have foolishly committed: | |
12 | ne fiat hæc quasi mortua, et ut abortivum quod projicitur de vulva matris suæ: ecce jam medium carnis ejus devoratum est a lepra. |
which we diden folili, that this womman be not maad as deed, and as a deed borun thing which is cast out of the wombe of his modir; lo! now the half of hir fleisch is deuourid with lepre. |
Let her not be as one dead, and as an abortive that is cast forth from the mother's womb. Lo, now one half of her flesh is consumed with the leprosy. | |
13 | Clamavitque Moyses ad Dominum, dicens: Deus, obsecro, sana eam. |
And Moises criede to the Lord, and seide, Lord, Y biseche, heele thou hir. |
And Moses cried to the Lord, saying: O God, I beseech thee heal her. | |
14 | Cui respondit Dominus: Si pater ejus spuisset in faciem illius, nonne debuerat saltem septem diebus rubore suffundi? separetur septem diebus extra castra, et postea revocabitur. |
To whom the Lord answerid, If hir fadir hadde spet in to hir face, where sche ouyte not to be fillid with schame, nameli in seuene daies? Therfor be sche departid out of the tentis bi seuen daies, and aftirward sche schal be clepid ayen. |
And the Lord answered him: If her father had spitten upon her face, ought she not to have been ashamed for seven days at least? Let her be separated seven days without the camp, and after wards she shall be called again. | |
15 | Exclusa est itaque Maria extra castra septem diebus: et populus non est motus de loco illo, donec revocata est Maria. |
And so Marie was excludid out of the tentis bi seuene daies; and the puple was not mouyd fro that place, til Marie was clepid ayen. |
Mary therefore was put out of the camp seven days : and the people moved not from that place until Mary was called again. | |

And the puple yede forth fro Asseroth, whanne the tentis weren set in the deseert of Pharan. |
And the people marched from Haseroth, and pitched their tents in the desert of Pharan. | |

and seide, Sende thou men that schulen biholde the lond of Canaan, which Y schal yyue to the sones of Israel, of ech lynage o man of the princes. |
Send men to view the land of Chanaan, which I will give to the children of Israel, one of every tribe, of the rulers. | |
4 | Fecit Moyses quod Dominus imperaverat, de deserto Pharan mittens principes viros, quorum ista sunt nomina. |
Moises dide that that the Lord comaundide, and sente fro the deseert of Pharan princes, men of whiche these ben the names. |
Moses did what the Lord had commanded, sending from the desert of Pharan, principal men, whose names are these: | |
5 | De tribu Ruben, Sammua filium Zechur. |
Of the lynage of Ruben, Semmya, the sone of Zectur. |
Of the tribe of Ruben, Sammua the son of Zechur. | |
6 | De tribu Simeon, Saphat filium Huri. |
Of the lynage of Symeon, Saphat, the sone of Hury. |
Of the tribe of Simeon, Saphat the son of Hurl. | |
7 | De tribu Juda, Caleb filium Jephone. |
Of the lynage of Juda, Caleph, the sone of Jephone. |
Of the tribe of Juda, Caleb the son of Jephone. | |

Of the lynage of Isachar, Igal, the sone of Joseph. |

These ben the names of men, which Moises sente to biholde the lond of Canaan; and he clepide Osee, the sone of Nun, Josue. |
These are the names of the men, whom Moses sent to view the land: and he called Osee the son of Nun, Josue. | |
18 | Misit ergo eos Moyses ad considerandam terram Chanaan, et dixit ad eos: Ascendite per meridianam plagam. Cumque veneritis ad montes, |
Therfor Moises sente hem to biholde the lond of Canaan, and seide to hem, Stie ye bi the south coost; and whanne ye comen to the hillis, |
And Moses sent them to view the land of Chanaan, and said to them: Go you up by the south side. And when you shall come to the mountains, | |
19 | considerate terram, qualis sit: et populum qui habitator est ejus, utrum fortis sit an infirmus: si pauci numero an plures: |
biholde ye the lond, what maner lond it is; and biholde ye the puple which is the dwellere therof, whether it is strong, ethir feble, whether thei ben fewe in noumbre, ether manye; |
View the land, of what sort it is: and the people that are the inhabitants thereof, whether they be strong or weak: few in number or many: | |
20 | ipsa terra, bona an mala: urbes quales, muratæ an absque muris: |
whether that lond is good, ethir yuel; what maner citees ben, wallid, ether without wallis; |
The land itself, whether it be good or bad: what manner of cities, walled or without walls: | |
21 | humus, pinguis an sterilis, nemorosa an absque arboribus. Confortamini, et afferte nobis de fructibus terræ. Erat autem tempus quando jam præcoquæ uvæ vesci possunt. |
whether the lond is fat, ether bareyn, whether it is ful of woodis, ethir without trees. Be ye coumfortid, and brynge ye to vs of the fruytis of that lond. Sotheli the tyme was, whanne grapis first ripe myyten be etun thanne. |
The ground, fat or barren, woody or without trees. Be of good courage, and bring us of the fruits of the land. Now it was the time when the first ripe grapes are fit to be eaten. | |
22 | Cumque ascendissent, exploraverunt terram a deserto Sin, usque Rohob intrantibus Emath. |
And whanne thei hadden stied, thei aspieden the lond, fro the deseert of Syn til to Rohob, as men entryth to Emath. |
And when they were gone up, they viewed the land from the desert of Sin, unto Rohob as you enter into Emath. | |
23 | Ascenderuntque ad meridiem, et venerunt in Hebron, ubi erant Achiman et Sisai et Tholmai filii Enac: nam Hebron septem annis ante Tanim urbem Ægypti condita est. |
And thei stieden to the south, and camen in to Ebron, where Achyman, and Sisai, and Tholmai, the sones of Enach, weren; for Hebron was maad bi seuen yeer bifor Thamnys, the citee of Egipt. |
And they went up at the south side, and came to Hebron, where were Achiman and Sisai and Tholmai the sons of Enac. For Hebron was built seven years before Tanis the city of Egypt. | |
24 | Pergentesque usque ad Torrentem botri, absciderunt palmitem cum uva sua, quem portaverunt in vecte duo viri. De malis quoque granatis et de ficis loci illius tulerunt: |
And thei yeden til to the stronde of clustre, and kittiden doun a sioun with his grape, which twei men baren in a barre; also thei token of pumgarnadis, and of the figis of that place which is clepid Nehelescol, |
And going forward as far as the torrent of the cluster of grapes, they cut off a branch with its cluster of grapes, which two men carried upon a lever. They took also of the pomegranates and of the figs of that place: | |
25 | qui appellatus est Nehelescol, id est Torrens botri, eo quod botrum portassent inde filii Israël. |
that is, the stronde of grape, for the sones of Israel baren a clustre fro thennus. |
Which was called Nehelescol, that is to say, the torrent of the cluster of grapes, because from thence the children of Israel had carried a cluster of grapes. | |
26 | Reversique exploratores terræ post quadraginta dies, omni regione circuita, |
And the aspieris of the lond, whanne thei hadden cumpassid al the cuntrey, after fourti daies camen to Moises and Aaron, |
And they that went to spy out the land returned after forty days, having gone round all the country, | |
27 | venerunt ad Moysen et Aaron et ad omnem cœtum filiorum Israël in desertum Pharan, quod est in Cades. Locutique eis et omni multitudini ostenderunt fructus terræ: |
and to al the cumpany of the sones of Israel, in to the deseert of Pharan which is in Cades. And the aspieris spaken to hem, and schewiden the fruytis of the lond to al the multitude, and telden, |
And came to Moses and Aaron and to all the assembly of the children of Israel to the desert of Pharan, which is in Cades. And speaking to them and to all the multitude, they shewed them the fruits of the land: | |
28 | et narraverunt, dicentes: Venimus in terram, ad quam misisti nos, quæ revera fluit lacte et melle, ut ex his fructibus cognosci potest: |
and seiden, We camen to the lond, to which thou sentest vs, which lond treuli flowith with mylk and hony, as it may be knowun bi these fruytis; |
And they related and said: We came into the land to which thou sentest us, which in very deed floweth with milk and honey as may be known by these fruits: | |
29 | sed cultores fortissimos habet, et urbes grandes atque muratas. Stirpem Enac vidimus ibi. |
but it hath strongeste inhabiteris, and grete cytees, and wallid; we sien there the kynrede of Anachym; Amalech dwellith in the south; |
But it hath very strong inhabitants, and the cities are great and walled. We saw there the race of Enac. | |
30 | Amalec habitat in meridie, Hethæus et Jebusæus et Amorrhæus in montanis: Chananæus vero moratur juxta mare et circa fluenta Jordanis. |
Ethei, and Jebusei, and Amorey dwellen in the hilli placis; forsothe Cananey dwellith bisidis the see, and bisidis the floodis of Jordan. |
Amalec dwelleth in the south, the Hethite and the Jebusite and the Amorrhite in the mountains: but the Chanaanite abideth by the sea and near the streams of the Jordan. | |
31 | Inter hæc Caleb compescens murmur populi, qui oriebatur contra Moysen, ait: Ascendamus, et possideamus terram, quoniam poterimus obtinere eam. |
Among thes thingis Caleph peeside the grutchyng of the puple, that was maad ayens Moises, and seide, Stie we, and welde we the lond, for we moun gete it. |
In the mean time Caleb, to still the murmuring of the people that rose against Moses, said: Let us go up and possess the land, for we shall be able to conquer it. | |
32 | Alii vero, qui fuerant cum eo, dicebant: Nequaquam ad hunc populum valemus ascendere, quia fortior nobis est. |
Forsothe other aspieris, that weren with hym, seiden, We moun not stie to this puple, for it is strongere than we. |
But the others, that had been with him, said: No, we are not able to go up to this people, because they are stronger than we. | |
33 | Detraxeruntque terræ, quam inspexerant, apud filios Israël, dicentes: Terra, quam lustravimus, devorat habitatores suos: populus, quem aspeximus, proceræ staturæ est. |
And thei deprauyden the lond which thei hadden biholde, anentis the sones of Israel, and seiden, The lond which we cumpassiden deuourith hise dwelleris; the puple which we bihelden is of large stature; there we syen summe wondris ayens kynde, |
And they spoke ill of the land, which they had viewed, before the children of Israel, saying: The land which we have viewed, devoureth its inhabitants: the people, that we beheld, are of a tall stature. | |
34 | Ibi vidimus monstra quædam filiorum Enac de genere giganteo: quibus comparati, quasi locustæ videbamur. |
of the sones of Enach, of the kynde of geauntis, to whiche we weren comparisound, and weren seien as locustis. |
There we saw certain monsters of the sons of Enac, of the giant kind: in comparison of whom, we seemed like locusts. | |
1 | Igitur vociferans omnis turba flevit nocte illa, |
Therfor al the cumpeny criede, and wepte in that nyyt, |
Wherefore the whole multitude crying wept that night. | Murmurings. Nu.14.1-10 |
2 | et murmurati sunt contra Moysen et Aaron cuncti filii Israël, dicentes: |
and alle the sones of Israel grutchiden ayens Moises and Aaron, and seiden, |
And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron, saying: | |
3 | Utinam mortui essemus in Ægypto: et in hac vasta solitudine utinam pereamus, et non inducat nos Dominus in terram istam, ne cadamus gladio, et uxores ac liberi nostri ducantur captivi. Nonne melius est reverti in Ægyptum? |
We wolden that we hadden be deed in Egipt, and not in this waast wildirnesse; we wolden that we perischen, and that the Lord lede vs not in to this lond, lest we fallen bi swerd, and oure wyues and fre children ben led prisoneris; whether it is not betere to turne ayen in to Egipt? |
Would God that we had died in Egypt and would God we may die in this vast wilderness, and that the Lord may not bring us into this land, lest we fall by the sword, and our wives and children be led away captives. Is it not better to return into Egypt? | |
4 | Dixeruntque alter ad alterum: Constituamus nobis ducem, et revertamur in Ægyptum. |
And thei seiden oon to another, Ordeyne we a duyk to vs, and turne we ayen in to Egipt. |
And they said one to another: Let us appoint a captain, and let us return into Egypt. | |
5 | Quo audito, Moyses et Aaron ceciderunt proni in terram coram omni multitudine filiorum Israël. |
And whanne this was herd, Moises and Aaron felden lowe to erthe, bifor al the multitude of the sones of Israel. |
And when Moses and Aaron heard this, they fell down flat upon the ground before the multitude of the children of Israel. | |
6 | At vero Josue filius Nun et Caleb filius Jephone, qui et ipsi lustraverant terram, sciderunt vestimenta sua, |
And sotheli Josue, the sone of Nun, and Caleph, the sone of Jephone, whiche also cumpassiden the lond, to renten her clothis, |
But Josue the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephone, who themselves also had viewed the land, rent their garments, | |
7 | et ad omnem multitudinem filiorum Israël locuti sunt: Terra, quam circuivimus, valde bona est. |
and spaken to al the multitude of the sones of Israel, The lond which we cumpassiden is ful good; |
And said to all the multitude of the children of Israel: The land which we have gone round is very good: | |
8 | Si propitius fuerit Dominus, inducet nos in eam, et tradet humum lacte et melle manantem. |
if the Lord is merciful to vs, he schal lede vs in to it, and schal yyue to vs the lond flowynge with mylk and hony. |
If the Lord be favourable, he will bring us into it, and give us a land flowing with milk and honey. | |
9 | Nolite rebelles esse contra Dominum: neque timeatis populum terræ hujus, quia sicut panem ita eos possumus devorare. Recessit ab eis omne præsidium: Dominus nobiscum est, nolite metuere. |
Nyle ye be rebel ayens the Lord, nether drede ye the puple of this lond, for we moun deuoure hem so as breed; al her help passide awei fro hem, the Lord is with vs, nyle ye drede. |
Be not rebellious against the Lord: and fear ye not the people of this land, for we are able to eat them up as bread. All aid is gone from them: the Lord is with us, fear ye not. | |
10 | Cumque clamaret omnis multitudo, et lapidibus eos vellet opprimere, apparuit gloria Domini super tectum fœderis cunctis filiis Israël. |
And whanne al the multitude criede, and wolde oppresse hem with stonys, the glorie of the Lord apperide on the roof of the boond of pees, while alle the sones of Israel sien. |
And when all the multitude cried out, and would have stoned them, the glory of the Lord appeared over the tabernacle of the covenant to all the children of Israel. | |
11 | Et dixit Dominus ad Moysen: Usquequo detrahet mihi populus iste? quousque non credent mihi, in omnibus signis quæ feci coram eis? |
And the Lord seide to Moises, Hou long schal this puple bacbite me? Hou longe schulen thei not bileue to me in alle signes, whiche Y haue do bifor hem? |
And the Lord said to Moses: How long will this people detract me? how long will they not believe me for all the signs that I have wrought before them? | Moses intercedes for the people. Nu.14.11-25 |
12 | Feriam igitur eos pestilentia, atque consumam: te autem faciam principem super gentem magnam, et fortiorem quam hæc est. |
Therfor Y schal smyte hem with pestilence, and Y schal waste hem; forsothe Y schal make thee prince on a greet folk, and strongere than is this. |
I will strike them therefore with pestilence, and will consume them: but thee I will make a ruler over a great nation, and a mightier than this is. | |
13 | Et ait Moyses ad Dominum: Ut audiant Ægyptii, de quorum medio eduxisti populum istum, |
And Moises seide to the Lord, Egipcians here not, fro whos myddil thou leddist out this puple, |
And Moses said to the Lord: That the Egyptians, from the midst of whom thou hast brought forth this people, | |
14 | et habitatores terræ hujus, qui audierunt quod tu, Domine, in populo isto sis, et facie videaris ad faciem, et nubes tua protegat illos, et in columna nubis præcedas eos per diem, et in columna ignis per noctem: |
and the dwelleris of this loond, whiche herden that thou, Lord, art in this puple, and art seyn face to face, and that thi cloude defendith hem, and that thou goist bifore hem in a pilere of cloude bi dai, |
And the inhabitants of this land, (who have heard that thou, O Lord, art among this people, and art seen face to face, and thy cloud protecteth them, and thou goest before them in a pillar of a cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night,) | |
15 | quod occideris tantam multitudinem quasi unum hominem, et dicant: |
and in a piler of fier bi nyyt, that thou hast slayn so greet a multitude as o man, |
May hear that thou hast killed so great a multitude as it were one man and may say: | |
16 | Non poterat introducere populum in terram pro qua juraverat: idcirco occidit eos in solitudine? |
and seie thei, He myyte not brynge this puple in to the lond for whiche he swoor, therfor he killide hem in wildirnesse; |
He could not bring the people into the land for which he had sworn, therefore did he kill them in the wilderness. | |
17 | Magnificetur ergo fortitudo Domini sicut jurasti, dicens: |
therfor the strengthe of the Lord be magnified, as thou hast swore. And Moises seide, |
Let their the strength of the Lord be magnified, as thou hast sworn, saying: | |
18 | Dominus patiens et multæ misericordiæ, auferens iniquitatem et scelera, nullumque innoxium derelinquens, qui visitas peccata patrum in filios in tertiam et quartam generationem. |
Lord pacient, and of myche mercy, doynge awei wickidnesse and trespassis, and leeuynge no man vngilti, which visitist the synnes of fadris in to sones in to the thridde and fourthe generacioun, Y biseche, |
The Lord is patient and full of mercy, taking away iniquity and wickedness, and leaving no man clear, who visitest the sins of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation. | |
19 | Dimitte, obsecro, peccatum populi hujus secundum magnitudinem misericordiæ tuæ, sicut propitius fuisti egredientibus de Ægypto usque ad locum istum. |
foryyue thou the synne of this thi puple, aftir the greetnesse of thi merci, as thou were merciful to men goynge out of Egipt til to this place. |
Forgive, I beseech thee, the sins of this people, according to the greatness of thy mercy, as thou hast been merciful to them from their going out of Egypt unto this place. | |
20 | Dixitque Dominus: Dimisi juxta verbum tuum. |
And the Lord seide, Y haue foryouun to hem, bi thi word. |
And the Lord said: I have forgiven according to thy word. | |
21 | Vivo ego: et implebitur gloria Domini universa terra. |
Y lyue; and the glorie of the Lord schal be fillid in al erthe; |
As I live: and the whole earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord. | |
22 | Attamen omnes homines qui viderunt majestatem meam, et signa quæ feci in Ægypto et in solitudine, et tentaverunt me jam per decem vices, nec obedierunt voci meæ, |
netheles alle men that sien my mageste, and my signes, whiche Y dide in Egipt and in the wildirnesse, and temptiden me now bi ten sithis, and obeieden not to my vois, |
But yet all the men that have seen my majesty, and the signs that I have done in Egypt, and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now ten times, and have not obeyed my voice, | |
23 | non videbunt terram pro qua juravi patribus eorum, nec quisquam ex illis qui detraxit mihi, intuebitur eam. |
schulen not se the lond for which Y swore to her fadris, nethir ony of hem that bacbitide me, schal se it. |
Shall not see the land for which I aware to their fathers, neither shall any one of them that hath detracted me behold it. | |
24 | Servum meum Caleb, qui plenus alio spiritu secutus est me, inducam in terram hanc, quam circuivit; et semen ejus possidebit eam. |
Y schal lede my seruaunt Caleph, that was ful of anothir spirit, and suede me, in to this lond, which he cumpasside, and his seed schal welde it. |
My servant Caleb, who being full of another spirit hath followed me, I will bring into this land which he hath gone round: and his seed shall possess it. | |
25 | Quoniam Amalecites et Chananæus habitant in vallibus. Cras movete castra, et revertimini in solitudinem per viam maris Rubri. |
For Amalech and Cananei dwellen in the valeis, to morewe moue ye tentis, and turne ye ayen in to wildirnesse bi the weie of the reed see. |
For the Amalecite and the Chanaanite dwell in the valleys. To morrow remove the camp, and return into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea. | |
26 | Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen et Aaron, dicens: |
And the Lord spak to Moises and to Aaron, and seide, |
And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying: | Punishment. Nu.14.26-38 |
27 | Usquequo multitudo hæc pessima murmurat contra me? querelas filiorum Israël audivi. |
Hou long grutchith this werste multitude ayens me? Y haue herd the pleyntis of the sones of Israel. |
How long doth this wicked multitude murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel. | |
28 | Dic ergo eis: Vivo ego, ait Dominus: sicut locuti estis audiente me, sic faciam vobis. |
Therfor seie thou to hem, Y lyue, seith the Lord; as ye spaken while Y herde, so Y schal do to you; |
Say therefore to them: As I live, saith the Lord: According as you have spoken in my hearing, so will I do to you. | |
29 | In solitudine hac jacebunt cadavera vestra. Omnes qui numerati estis a viginti annis et supra, et murmurastis contra me, |
youre careyns schulen ligge in this wildirnesse. Alle ye that ben noumbrid, fro twenti yeer and aboue, and grutchiden ayens me, |
fin the wilderness shall your carcasses lie. All you that were numbered from twenty years old and upward, and have murmured against me, | |
30 | non intrabitis terram, super quam levavi manum meam ut habitare vos facerem, præter Caleb filium Jephone, et Josue filium Nun. |
schulen not entre in to the lond, on which Y reiside myn hond, that Y schulde make you to dwelle outakun Caleph, the sone of Jephone, and Josue, the sone of Nun. |
Shall not enter into the land, over which I lifted up my bend to make you dwell therein, except Caleb the son of Jephone, and Josue the son of Nun. | |
31 | Parvulos autem vestros, de quibus dixistis quod prædæ hostibus forent, introducam, ut videant terram, quæ vobis displicuit. |
Forsothe Y schal lede in youre litle children, of whiche ye seiden that thei schulden be preyes ethir raueyns to enemyes, that thei se the lond which displeside you. |
But your children, of whom you said, that they should be a prey to the enemies, will I bring in: that they may see the land which you have despised. | |
32 | Vestra cadavera jacebunt in solitudine. |
Forsothe youre careyns schulen ligge in the wildirnesse; |
Your carcasses shall lie in the wilderness. | |
33 | Filii vestri erunt vagi in deserto annis quadraginta, et portabunt fornicationem vestram, donec consumantur cadavera patrum in deserto, |
youre sones schulen be walkeris aboute in the deseert bi fourti yeer, and thei schulen bere youre fornycacioun, til the careyns of the fadris ben wastid in the deseert, |
Your children shall wander in the desert forty years, and shall bear your fornication, until the carcasses of their fathers be consumed ill the desert, | |
34 | juxta numerum quadraginta dierum, quibus considerastis terram: annus pro die imputabitur. Et quadraginta annis recipietis iniquitates vestras, et scietis ultionem meam: |
by the noumbre of fourti daies, in whiche ye bihelden the loond; a yeer schal be arettid for a dai, and bi fourti yeer ye schulen resseyue youre wickidnesse, and ye schulen knowe my veniaunce. |
According to the number of the forty days, wherein you viewed the land: year shall be counted for a day. And forty years you shall receive your iniquities, and shall know my revenge: | |
35 | quoniam sicut locutus sum, ita faciam omni multitudini huic pessimæ, quæ consurrexit adversum me: in solitudine hac deficiet, et morietur. |
For as Y spak, so Y schal do to al this werste multitude, that roos to gidere ayens me; it schal faile, and schal die in this wildirnesse. |
For as I have spoken, so will I do to all this wicked multitude, that hath risen up together against me: in this wilderness shall it faint away and die. | |
36 | Igitur omnes viri, quos miserat Moyses ad contemplandam terram, et qui reversi murmurare fecerant contra eum omnem multitudinem, detrahentes terræ quod esset mala, |
Therfor alle the men whyche Moises hadde sent to see the lond, and whiche turniden ayen, and maden al the multitude to grutche ayens hym, and depraueden the lond, that it was yuel, |
Therefore all the men, whom Moses had sent to view the land, and who at their return had made the whole multitude to murmur against him, speaking ill of the land that it was naught, | |
37 | mortui sunt atque percussi in conspectu Domini. |
weren deed, and smytun in the siyt of the Lord. |
Died and were struck in the sight of the Lord. | |
38 | Josue autem filius Nun, et Caleb filius Jephone, vixerunt ex omnibus qui perrexerant ad considerandam terram. |

40 | Et ecce mane primo surgentes ascenderunt verticem montis, atque dixerunt: Parati sumus ascendere ad locum, de quo Dominus locutus est: quia peccavimus. |
And, lo! thei riseden in the morewtid first, and stieden in to the cop of the hil, and seiden, We ben redi to stie to the place, of which the Lord spak, for we synneden. |
And behold rising up very early in the morning, they went up to the top of the mountain, and said: We are ready to go up to the place, of which the Lord hath spoken: for we have sinned. | |
41 | Quibus Moyses: Cur, inquit, transgredimini verbum Domini, quod vobis non cedet in prosperum? |
To whiche Moises seide, Whi passen ye the word of the Lord, that schal not bifalle to you in to prosperite? |
And Moses said to them: Why transgress you the word of the Lord, which shall not succeed prosperously with you? | |
42 | nolite ascendere: non enim est Dominus vobiscum: ne corruatis coram inimicis vestris. |
Nyle ye stie, for the Lord is not with you, lest ye fallen bifor youre enemyes. |
Go not up, for the Lord is not with you: lest you fall before your enemies. | |
43 | Amalecites et Chananæus ante vos sunt, quorum gladio corruetis, eo quod nolueritis acquiescere Domino: nec erit Dominus vobiscum. |
Amalech and Cananei ben bifor you, bi the swerd of whiche ye schulen falle, for ye nolden assente to the Lord, nether the Lord schal be with you. |
The Amalecite and the Chanaanite are before you, and by their sword you shall fall, because you would not consent to the Lord, neither will the Lord be with you. | |
44 | At illi contenebrati ascenderunt in verticem montis. Arca autem testamenti Domini et Moyses non recesserunt de castris. |
And thei weren maad derk, and stieden in to the cop of the hil; forsothe the ark of the testament of the Lord and Moises yeden not awey fro the tentis. |
But they being blinded went up to the top of the mountain. But the ark of the testament of the Lord and Moses departed not from the camp. | |
45 | Descenditque Amalecites et Chananæus, qui habitabat in monte: et percutiens eos atque concidens, persecutus est eos usque Horma. |
And Amalech cam doun, and Chananei, that dwelliden in the hil, and he smoot hem, and kittide doun, and pursuede hem til Horma. |
And the Amalecite came down, and the Chanaanite that dwelt in the mountain: and smiting and slaying them pursued them as far as Horma. | |
