37 1 SO JACOB LIVED IN CANAAN, the country in which his father had settled. 37 2 And this is the story of the descendants of Jacob. When Joseph was a boy of seventeen, he used to accompany his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father's wives, when they were in charge of the flock; and he brought their father a bad report of them. 37 3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than any other of his sons, because he was a child of his old age, and he made him a long, sleeved robe. 37 4 When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not say a kind word to him.
37 5 Joseph had a dream; and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him still more. 37 6 He said to them, 'Listen to this dream I have had. 37 7 We were in the field binding sheaves, and my sheaf rose on end and stood upright, and your sheaves gathered round and bowed low before my sheaf.' 37 8 His brothers answered him, 'Do you think you will one day be a king and lord it over us?' and they hated him still more because of his dreams and what he said. 37 9 He had another dream, which he told to his father and his brothers. He said, 'Listen: I have had another dream. The sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.' 37 10 When he told it to his father and his brothers, his father took him to task: 'What is this dream of yours?' he said. 'Must we come and bow low to the ground before you, I and your mother and your brothers?' 37 11 His brothers were jealous of him, but his father did not forget.
