katapi HOME John 13:21-30 - Jesus Foretells His Betrayal  Jn.13.21-30 (Jerusalem)- Mt.26.20-25, Mk.14.17021, Lk.22.21-23 | NEB Contents | notes

13 21 After saying this, Jesus exclaimed in deep agitation of spirit, 'In truth, in very truth I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.' 13 22 The disciples looked at one another in bewilderment: whom could he be speaking of? 13 23 One of them, the disciple he loved, was reclining close beside Jesus. 13 24 So Simon Peter nodded to him and said, 'Ask who it is he means.' 13 25 That disciple, as he reclined, leaned back close to Jesus and asked, 'Lord, who is it?' 13 26 Jesus replied, 'It is the man to whom I give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.' Then, after dipping it in the dish, he took it out and gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot. 13 27 As soon as Judas had received it Satan entered him. Jesus said to him, 'Do quickly what you have to do.' 13 28 No one at the table understood what he meant by this. 13 29 Some supposed that, as Judas was in charge of the common purse, Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival, or to make some gift to the poor. 13 30 Judas, then, received the bread and went out. It was night.
