22 ³⁹ THEN HE WENT OUT and made his way as usual to the Mount of Olives, accompanied by the disciples. 22 ⁴⁰ When he reached the place he said to them, 'Pray that you may be spared the hour of testing.' 22 ⁴¹ He himself withdrew from them about a stone's throw, knelt down, and began to pray: 22 ⁴² 'Father, if it be thy will, take this cup away from me. Yet not my will but thine be done.'
22 ⁴³ And now there appeared to him an angel from heaven bringing him strength, 22 ⁴⁴ and in anguish of spirit he prayed the more urgently; and his sweat was like clots of blood falling to the ground. Some witnesses omit: And now ... ground. 22 ⁴⁵ When he rose from prayer and came to the disciples he found them asleep, worn out by grief. 22 ⁴⁶ 'Why are you sleeping?' he said. 'Rise and pray that you may be spared the test.'
