katapi HOME Luke 18:18-30 - The Rich Young Man  Lk.18.18-30 (borders of Samaria)- Mt.19.16-30, Mk.10.17-31 | NEB Contents | notes

18 18 A man of the ruling class put this question to him: 'Good Master, what must I do to win eternal life?' 18 19 Jesus said to him, 'Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 18 20 You know the commandments: "Do not commit adultery; do not murder; do not steal; do not give false evidence; honour your father and mother." ' 18 21 The man answered, 'I have kept all these since I was a boy.' 18 22 On hearing this Jesus said, 'There is still one thing lacking: sell everything you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have riches in heaven; and come, follow me.' 18 23 At these words his heart sank; for he was a very rich man. 18 24 When Jesus saw it he said, 'How hard it is for the wealthy to enter the kingdom of God! 18 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.' 18 26 Those who heard asked, 'Then who can be saved?' 18 27 He answered, 'What is impossible for men is possible for God.'
18 28 Peter said, 'Here are we who have left our belongings to become your followers.' 18 29 Jesus said, 'I tell you this: there is no one who has given up home, or wife, brothers, parents, or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 18 30 who will not be repaid many times over in this age, and in the age to come have eternal life.'
