katapi HOME Luke 5:27-32 - The Calling of Levi  Lk.5.27-32 (Capernaum)- Mt.9.9-13, Mk.2.13-17 | NEB Contents | notes

5 27 Later, when he went out, he saw a tax-gatherer, Levi by name, at his seat in the custom-house. 5 28 He said to him, 'Follow me'; and he rose to his feet, left everything behind, and followed him.

5 29 Afterwards Levi held a big reception in his house for Jesus; among the guests was a large party of tax-gatherers and others. 5 30 The Pharisees and the lawyers of their sect complained to his disciples: 'Why do you eat and drink', they said, 'with tax-gatherers and sinners?' 5 31 Jesus answered them: 'It is not the healthy that need a doctor, but the sick; 5 32 I have not come to invite virtuous people, but to call sinners to repentance.'
