katapi HOME Mark 10:1-12 - Teaching about Divorce  Mk.10.1-12 (Borders of Samaria)- Mt.19.1-12 | NEB Contents | notes

10 1 ON LEAVING THOSE PARTS he came into the regions of Judaea and Transjordan; and when a crowd gathered round him once again, he followed his usual practice and taught them.

10 2 The question was put to him: 'Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?' This was to test him. 10 3 He asked in return, 'What did Moses command you?' 10 4 [ Dt.24.1-3. ] They answered, 'Moses permitted a man to divorce his wife by note of dismissal.' 10 5 Jesus said to them, 'It was because you were so unteachable that he made this rule for you; 10 6 [ Gn.1.27, Gn.5.2. ] but in the beginning, at the creation. God made them male and female. 10 7 [ Gn.2.24. ] For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother, and be made one with his wife; Some witnesses omit: and be made ... wife. 10 8 and the two shall become one flesh. It follows that they are no longer two individuals: they are one flesh. 10 9 What God has joined together, man must not separate.'

10 10 When they were indoors again the disciples questioned him about this matter; 10 11 he said to them, 'Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her: 10 12 so too, if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.'
