8 ²⁸ When he reached the other side, in the country of the Gadarenes, he was met by two men who came out from the tombs; they were possessed by devils, and so violent that no one dared pass that way. 8 ²⁹ 'You son of God,' they shouted, 'what do you want with us? Have you come here to torment us before our time?' 8 ³⁰ In the distance a large herd of pigs was feeding; 8 ³¹ and the devils begged him: 'If you drive us out, send us into that herd of pigs.' 8 ³² 'Begone', he said. Then they came out and went into the pigs; the whole herd rushed over the edge into the lake, and perished in the water.
8 ³³ The men in charge of them took to their heels, and made for the town, where they told the whole story, and what had happened to the madmen. 8 ³⁴ Thereupon the whole town came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw him they begged him to leave the district and go.
