katapi HOME Matthew 4:12-17 - The Beginning of the Galilean Ministry  Mt.4.12-17 (Machaerus-Capernaum)- Mk.1.14-15, Lk.4.14-15 | NEB Contents | notes

4 12 When he heard that John had been arrested, Jesus withdrew to Galilee; 4 13 and leaving Nazareth he went and settled at Capernaum on the Sea of Galilee, in the district of Zebulun and Naphtali. 4 14 This was in fulfilment of the passage in the prophet Isaiah which tells of

4 15 [ Is.9.1-2, Is.42.7. ] 'the land of Zebulun, the land of Naphtali, the road by the sea, the land beyond Jordan, heathen Galilee', and says: 4 16 'The people that lived in darkness saw a great light;
light dawned on the dwellers in the land of death's dark shadow.'

4 17 From that day Jesus began to proclaim the message: 'Repent; for Some witnesses omit: Repent; for the kingdom of Heaven is upon you.'
