Psalms

A Prayer of David.

Incline Thine Ear O Lord.  Psalm 86(v85)

1Incline your ear, O Yahweh, and answer me,
for I am poor and needy.
2Preserve my life, for I am godly;
save your servant who trusts in you.
You are my God; 3be gracious to me, O Yahweh,
for to you do I cry all the day.
4Gladden the soul of your servant,
for to you, O Yahweh, do I lift up my soul.
5For you are good and forgiving, O Yahweh,
abounding in steadfast love to all who call on you.
6Give ear, O Yahweh, to my prayer;
hearken to my cry of supplication.
7In the day of my trouble I call on you,
for you answer me.

8There is none like you among the gods,
O Yahweh, nor are there any works like yours.
9All the nations you have made shall come and bow down before you, O Yahweh,
and shall glorify your name.
10For you are great and do wondrous things,
you alone are God.
11Teach me your way, O Yahweh, that I may walk in your truth;
unite my heart to fear your name.
12I give thanks to you, O Yahweh my God, with my whole heart,
and I will glorify your name for ever.
13For great is your steadfast love toward me;
you have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.
14O God, insolent men have risen up against me;
a band of ruthless men seek my life,
and they do not set you before them.
15But you, O Yahweh, are a God merciful and gracious,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.
16Turn to me and take pity on me;
give your strength to your servant,
and save the son of your handmaid.
17Show me a sign of your favour,
that those who hate me may see and be put to shame
because you, LORD, have helped me and comforted me.

Notes: This webpage enables you to select-a-version from the Bible versions held on the katapi bible database.
This page displays the katapi New Standard Bible as flowing text.
The katapi New Standard Bible is a very light revision of the RSV. The changes are: (1) In places where 'the LORD', 'O LORD' occurs in the RSV, (it represents the tetragrammaton - YHWH - which is in the hebrew text), I have used the name 'Yahweh'.
(2) I have removed the quotation marks and hyphens that were used in so many names in the RSV as an aid to correct pronunciation. This now brings it in line with all other English versions, and makes any word-search more accurate.
(3) I have changed all (I hope!) of the RSV archaic language sections to modern.
