1 Chronicles

Nathan the prophet's message to David.  1Chr.17.1-15 - 2Sm.7.1-17

1Now when David dwelt in his house, David said to Nathan the prophet, "Behold, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of the covenant of Yahweh is under a tent." 2And Nathan said to David, "Do all that is in your heart, for God is with you."

3But that same night the word of Yahweh came to Nathan, 4"Go and tell my servant David, 'Thus says Yahweh: You shall not build me a house to dwell in. 5For I have not dwelt in a house since the day I led up Israel to this day, but I have gone from tent to tent and from dwelling to dwelling. 6In all places where I have moved with all Israel, did I speak a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people, saying, "Why have you not built me a house of cedar?" ' 7Now therefore thus shall you say to my servant David, 'Thus says Yahweh of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people Israel; 8and I have been with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make for you a name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. 9And I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place, and be disturbed no more; and violent men shall waste them no more, as formally, 10from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel; and I will subdue all your enemies. Moreover I declare to you that Yahweh will build you a house. 11When your days are fulfilled to go to be with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom. 12He shall build a house for me, and I will establish his throne for ever. 13I will be his father, and he shall be my son; I will not take my steadfast love from him, as I took it from him who was before you, 14but I will confirm him in my house and in my kingdom for ever and his throne shall be established for ever.' " 15In accordance with all these words, and in accordance with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David.

David's prayer of thanksgiving.  1Chr.17.16-27 - 2Sm.7.18-29

16Then King David went in and sat before Yahweh, and said, "Who am I, O Yahweh God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far? 17And this was a small thing in your eyes, O God; you have also spoken of your servant's house for a great while to come, and have shown me future generations, O Yahweh God! 18And what more can David say to you for honouring your servant? For you know your servant. 19For your servant's sake, O Yahweh, and according to your own heart, you have wrought all this greatness, in making known all these great things. 20There is none like you, O Yahweh, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears. 21What other nation on earth is like your people Israel, whom God went to redeem to be his people, making for yourself a name for great and terrible things, in driving out nations before your people whom you redeemed from Egypt? 22And you made your people Israel to be your people for ever; and you, O Yahweh, became their God. 23And now, O Yahweh, let the word which you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house be established for ever, and do as you have spoken; 24and your name will be established and magnified for ever, saying, 'Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, is Israel's God,' and the house of your servant David will be established before you. 25For you, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for him; therefore your servant has found courage to pray before you. 26And now, O Yahweh, you are God, and you have promised this good thing to your servant; 27now therefore may it please you to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue for ever before you; for what you have blessed, O Yahweh, is blessed for ever."

This page displays the katapi New Standard Bible as flowing text.
The katapi New Standard Bible is a very light revision of the RSV. The changes are: (1) In places where 'the LORD', 'O LORD' occurs in the RSV, (it represents the tetragrammaton - YHWH - which is in the hebrew text), I have used the name 'Yahweh'.
(2) I have removed the quotation marks and hyphens that were used in so many names in the RSV as an aid to correct pronunciation. This now brings it in line with all other English versions, and makes any word-search more accurate.
(3) I have changed all (I hope!) of the RSV archaic language sections to modern.
