1 Chronicles: 14

Generations - Judah.  1Chr.4.1-10 - 2Sm.5.11-16

1 [vv1-16. cp 2Sam. 5.11-25] Hiram king of Tyre sent an embassy to David; he sent cedar logs, and masons and carpenters with them to build him a house. 2David knew by now that the LORD had confirmed him as king over Israel and had made his royal power stand higher for the sake of his people Israel.

3David married more wives in Jerusalem, and more sons and daughters were born to him. 4 [vv4-7: cp 3.5-8]These are the names of the children born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 5Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet, 6Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, 7Elishama, Beeliada and Eliphelet.

Victory over the Philistines.  1Chr.14.8-17 - 2Sm.5.17-25

8When the Philistines learnt that David had been anointed king over the whole of Israel, they came up in force to seek him out. David, hearing of this, went out to face them. 9Now the Philistines had come and raided the Vale of Rephaim. 10So David inquired of God, 'If I attack the Philistines, wilt thou deliver them into my hands?' And the LORD answered, 'Go; I will deliver them into your hands.' 11So he went up and attacked them at Baal-perazim and defeated them there. 'God has used me to break through my enemies' lines,' David said, 'as a river breaks its banks'; that is why the place was named Baal-perazim [That is Baal of Break-through] 12The Philistines left their gods behind them there, and by David's orders these were burnt.

13The Philistines made another raid on the Vale. 14Again David inquired of God, and God said to him, 'No, you must go up towards their rear; wheel round without making contact and [No ... contact and: or Do not go up to the attack; withdraw from them and then] come upon them opposite the aspens. 15Then, as soon as you hear a rustling sound in the tree-tops, you shall give battle, for God will have gone out before you to defeat the Philistine army.' 16David did as God commanded, and they drove the Philistine army in flight all the way from Gibeon to Gezer. 17So David's fame spread through every land, and the LORD inspired all nations with dread of him.
