| 3 1 | Now the boy Samuel was ministering to Yahweh under Eli. And the word of Yahweh was rare in those days; there was no frequent vision. | The call of Samuel. 1Sm.3.1-4.1 | וְהַנַּעַר שְׁמוּאֵל מְשָׁרֵת אֶת־יְהוָה לִפְנֵי עֵלִי וּדְבַר־יְהוָה הָיָה יָקָר בַּיָּמִים הָהֵם אֵין חָזֹון נִפְרָץ׃ ס |
| 2 | At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim, so that he could not see, was lying down in his own place; | וַיְהִי בַּיֹּום הַהוּא וְעֵלִי שֹׁכֵב בִּמְקֹמֹו כ= וְעֵינֹו ק= וְעֵינָיו הֵחֵלּוּ כֵהֹות לֹא יוּכַל לִרְאֹות׃ | |
| 3 | the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down within the temple of Yahweh, where the ark of God was. | וְנֵר אֱלֹהִים טֶרֶם יִכְבֶּה וּשְׁמוּאֵל שֹׁכֵב בְּהֵיכַל יְהוָה אֲשֶׁר־שָׁם אֲרֹון אֱלֹהִים׃ ף | |
| 4 | Then Yahweh called, "Samuel! Samuel!" and he said, "Here I am!" | וַיִּקְרָא יְהוָה אֶל־שְׁמוּאֵל וַיֹּאמֶר הִנֵּנִי׃ | |
| 5 | and ran to Eli, and said, "Here I am, for you called me." But he said, "I did not call; lie down again." So he went and lay down. | וַיָּרָץ אֶל־עֵלִי וַיֹּאמֶר הִנְנִי כִּי־קָרָאתָ לִּי וַיֹּאמֶר לֹא־קָרָאתִי שׁוּב שְׁכָב וַיֵּלֶךְ וַיִּשְׁכָּב׃ ס | |
| 6 | And Yahweh called again, "Samuel!" And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, "Here I am, for you called me." But he said, "I did not call, my son; lie down again." | וַיֹּסֶף יְהוָה קְרֹא עֹוד שְׁמוּאֵל וַיָּקָם שְׁמוּאֵל וַיֵּלֶךְ אֶל־עֵלִי וַיֹּאמֶר הִנְנִי כִּי קָרָאתָ לִי וַיֹּאמֶר לֹא־קָרָאתִי בְנִי שׁוּב שְׁכָב׃ | |
| 7 | Now Samuel did not yet know Yahweh, and the word of Yahweh had not yet been revealed to him. | וּשְׁמוּאֵל טֶרֶם יָדַע אֶת־יְהוָה וְטֶרֶם יִגָּלֶה אֵלָיו דְּבַר־יְהוָה׃ | |
| 8 | And Yahweh called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, "Here I am, for you called me." Then Eli perceived that Yahweh was calling the boy. | וַיֹּסֶף יְהוָה קְרֹא־שְׁמוּאֵל בַּשְּׁלִשִׁית וַיָּקָם וַיֵּלֶךְ אֶל־עֵלִי וַיֹּאמֶר הִנְנִי כִּי קָרָאתָ לִי וַיָּבֶן עֵלִי כִּי יְהוָה קֹרֵא לַנָּעַר׃ | |
| 9 | Therefore Eli said to Samuel, "Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, 'Speak, LORD, for your servant hears.' " So Samuel went and lay down in his place. | וַיֹּאמֶר עֵלִי לִשְׁמוּאֵל לֵךְ שְׁכָב וְהָיָה אִם־יִקְרָא אֵלֶיךָ וְאָמַרְתָּ דַּבֵּר יְהוָה כִּי שֹׁמֵעַ עַבְדֶּךָ וַיֵּלֶךְ שְׁמוּאֵל וַיִּשְׁכַּב בִּמְקֹומֹו׃ | |
| 10 | And Yahweh came and stood forth, calling as at other times, "Samuel! Samuel!" And Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant hears." | וַיָּבֹא יְהוָה וַיִּתְיַצַּב וַיִּקְרָא כְפַעַם־בְּפַעַם שְׁמוּאֵל שְׁמוּאֵל וַיֹּאמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל דַּבֵּר כִּי שֹׁמֵעַ עַבְדֶּךָ׃ ף | |
| 11 | Then Yahweh said to Samuel, "Behold, I am about to do a thing in Israel, at which the two ears of everyone that hears it will tingle. | וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל־שְׁמוּאֵל הִנֵּה אָנֹכִי עֹשֶׂה דָבָר בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל אֲשֶׁר כָּל־שֹׁמְעֹו תְּצִלֶּינָה שְׁתֵּי אָזְנָיו׃ | |
| 12 | On that day I will fulfil against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. | בַּיֹּום הַהוּא אָקִים אֶל־עֵלִי אֵת כָּל־אֲשֶׁר דִּבַּרְתִּי אֶל־בֵּיתֹו הָחֵל וְכַלֵּה׃ | |
| 13 | And I tell him that I am about to punish his house for ever, for the iniquity which he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God, and he did not restrain them. | וְהִגַּדְתִּי לֹו כִּי־שֹׁפֵט אֲנִי אֶת־בֵּיתֹו עַד־עֹולָם בַּעֲוֹן אֲשֶׁר־יָדַע כִּי־מְקַלְלִים לָהֶם בָּנָיו וְלֹא כִהָה בָּם׃ | |
| 14 | Therefore I swear to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be expiated by sacrifice or offering for ever." | וְלָכֵן נִשְׁבַּעְתִּי לְבֵית עֵלִי אִם־יִתְכַּפֵּר עֲוֹן בֵּית־עֵלִי בְּזֶבַח וּבְמִנְחָה עַד־עֹולָם׃ | |
| 15 | Samuel lay until morning; then he opened the doors of the house of Yahweh. And Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli. | וַיִּשְׁכַּב שְׁמוּאֵל עַד־הַבֹּקֶר וַיִּפְתַּח אֶת־דַּלְתֹות בֵּית־יְהוָה וּשְׁמוּאֵל יָרֵא מֵהַגִּיד אֶת־הַמַּרְאָה אֶל־עֵלִי׃ | |
| 16 | But Eli called Samuel and said, "Samuel, my son." And he said, "Here I am." | וַיִּקְרָא עֵלִי אֶת־שְׁמוּאֵל וַיֹּאמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל בְּנִי וַיֹּאמֶר הִנֵּנִי׃ | |
| 17 | And Eli said, "What was it that he told you? Do not hide it from me. May God do so to you and more also, if you hide anything from me of all that he told you." | וַיֹּאמֶר מָה הַדָּבָר אֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר אֵלֶיךָ אַל־נָא תְכַחֵד מִמֶּנִּי כֹּה יַעֲשֶׂה־לְּךָ אֱלֹהִים וְכֹה יֹוסִיף אִם־תְּכַחֵד מִמֶּנִּי דָּבָר מִכָּל־הַדָּבָר אֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּר אֵלֶיךָ׃ | |
| 18 | So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. And he said, "It is Yahweh; let him do what seems good to him." | וַיַּגֶּד־לֹו שְׁמוּאֵל אֶת־כָּל־הַדְּבָרִים וְלֹא כִחֵד מִמֶּנּוּ וַיֹּאמַר יְהוָה הוּא הַטֹּוב בְּעֵינָו יַעֲשֶׂה׃ ף | |
| 19 | And Samuel grew, and Yahweh was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. | וַיִּגְדַּל שְׁמוּאֵל וַיהוָה הָיָה עִמֹּו וְלֹא־הִפִּיל מִכָּל־דְּבָרָיו אָרְצָה׃ | |
| 20 | And all Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was established as a prophet of Yahweh. | וַיֵּדַע כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵל מִדָּן וְעַד־בְּאֵר שָׁבַע כִּי נֶאֱמָן שְׁמוּאֵל לְנָבִיא לַיהוָה׃ | |
| 21 | And Yahweh appeared again at Shiloh, for Yahweh revealed himself to Samuel at Shiloh by the word of Yahweh. | וַיֹּסֶף יְהוָה לְהֵרָאֹה בְשִׁלֹה כִּי־נִגְלָה יְהוָה אֶל־שְׁמוּאֵל בְּשִׁלֹו בִּדְבַר יְהוָה׃ ף | |
| 4 1 | And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out to battle against the Philistines; they encamped at Ebenezer, and the Philistines encamped at Aphek. | וַיְהִי דְבַר־שְׁמוּאֵל לְכָל־יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיֵּצֵא יִשְׂרָאֵל לִקְרַאת פְּלִשְׁתִּים לַמִּלְחָמָה וַיַּחֲנוּ עַל־הָאֶבֶן הָעֵזֶר וּפְלִשְׁתִּים חָנוּ בַאֲפֵק׃ | |
