| 1 1 | After the death of Joshua the people of Israel inquired of Yahweh, "Who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites, to fight against them?" | JUDGES. INTRODUCTION: conquests by the men of Judah & Simeon Jdg.1.1-21 | וַיְהִי אַחֲרֵי מֹות יְהֹושֻׁעַ וַיִּשְׁאֲלוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בַּיהוָה לֵאמֹר מִי יַעֲלֶה־לָּנוּ אֶל־הַכְּנַעֲנִי בַּתְּחִלָּה לְהִלָּחֶם בֹּו׃ |

| 2 | Yahweh said, "Judah shall go up; behold, I have given the land into his hand." | | וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה יְהוּדָה יַעֲלֶה הִנֵּה נָתַתִּי אֶת־הָאָרֶץ בְּיָדֹו׃ |
|
| 3 | And Judah said to Simeon his brother, "Come up with me into the territory allotted to me, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with you into the territory allotted to you." So Simeon went with him. | | וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוּדָה לְשִׁמְעֹון אָחִיו עֲלֵה אִתִּי בְגֹורָלִי וְנִלָּחֲמָה בַּכְּנַעֲנִי וְהָלַכְתִּי גַם־אֲנִי אִתְּךָ בְּגֹורָלֶךָ וַיֵּלֶךְ אִתֹּו שִׁמְעֹון׃ |

| 4 | Then Judah went up and Yahweh gave the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand; and they defeated ten thousand of them at Bezek. | | וַיַּעַל יְהוּדָה וַיִּתֵּן יְהוָה אֶת־הַכְּנַעֲנִי וְהַפְּרִזִּי בְּיָדָם וַיַּכּוּם בְּבֶזֶק עֲשֶׂרֶת אֲלָפִים אִישׁ׃ |

| 5 | They came upon Adoni-bezek at Bezek, and fought against him, and defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites. | | וַיִּמְצְאוּ אֶת־אֲדֹנִי בֶזֶק בְּבֶזֶק וַיִּלָּחֲמוּ בֹּו וַיַּכּוּ אֶת־הַכְּנַעֲנִי וְאֶת־הַפְּרִזִּי׃ |

| 6 | Adoni-bezek fled; but they pursued him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes. | | וַיָּנָס אֲדֹנִי בֶזֶק וַיִּרְדְּפוּ אַחֲרָיו וַיֹּאחֲזוּ אֹתֹו וַיְקַצְּצוּ אֶת־בְּהֹנֹות יָדָיו וְרַגְלָיו׃ |

| 7 | And Adoni-bezek said, "Seventy kings with their thumbs and their great toes cut off used to pick up scraps under my table; as I have done, so God has requited me." And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there. | | וַיֹּאמֶר אֲדֹנִי־בֶזֶק שִׁבְעִים מְלָכִים בְּהֹנֹות יְדֵיהֶם וְרַגְלֵיהֶם מְקֻצָּצִים הָיוּ מְלַקְּטִים תַּחַת שֻׁלְחָנִי כַּאֲשֶׁר עָשִׂיתִי כֵּן שִׁלַּם־לִי אֱלֹהִים וַיְבִיאֻהוּ יְרוּשָׁלִַם וַיָּמָת שָׁם׃ ף |

| 8 | And the men of Judah fought against Jerusalem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire. | Jerusalem & Hebron taken. Jdg.1.8-10 | וַיִּלָּחֲמוּ בְנֵי־יְהוּדָה בִּירוּשָׁלִַם וַיִּלְכְּדוּ אֹותָהּ וַיַּכּוּהָ לְפִי־חָרֶב וְאֶת־הָעִיר שִׁלְּחוּ בָאֵשׁ׃ |

| 9 | And afterward the men of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites who dwelt in the hill country, in the Negeb, and in the lowland. | | וְאַחַר יָרְדוּ בְּנֵי יְהוּדָה לְהִלָּחֵם בַּכְּנַעֲנִי יֹושֵׁב הָהָר וְהַנֶּגֶב וְהַשְּׁפֵלָה׃ |

| 10 | And Judah went against the Canaanites who dwelt in Hebron (now the name of Hebron was formerly Kiriath-arba); and they defeated Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai. | | וַיֵּלֶךְ יְהוּדָה אֶל־הַכְּנַעֲנִי הַיֹּושֵׁב בְּחֶבְרֹון וְשֵׁם־חֶבְרֹון לְפָנִים קִרְיַת אַרְבַּע וַיַּכּוּ אֶת־שֵׁשַׁי וְאֶת־אֲחִימַן וְאֶת־תַּלְמָי׃ |

| 11 | From there they went against the inhabitants of Debir. The name of Debir was formerly Kiriath-sepher. | Othniel takes the city of Debir. Jdg.1.11-15 | Jos.15.13-19 | וַיֵּלֶךְ מִשָּׁם אֶל־יֹושְׁבֵי דְּבִיר וְשֵׁם־דְּבִיר לְפָנִים קִרְיַת־סֵפֶר׃ |

| 12 | And Caleb said, "He who attacks Kiriath-sepher and takes it, I will give him Achsah my daughter as wife." | | וַיֹּאמֶר כָּלֵב אֲשֶׁר־יַכֶּה אֶת־קִרְיַת־סֵפֶר וּלְכָדָהּ וְנָתַתִּי לֹו אֶת־עַכְסָה בִתִּי לְאִשָּׁה׃ |

| 13 | And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it; and he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife. | | וַיִּלְכְּדָהּ עָתְנִיאֵל בֶּן־קְנַז אֲחִי כָלֵב הַקָּטֹן מִמֶּנּוּ וַיִּתֶּן־לֹו אֶת־עַכְסָה בִתֹּו לְאִשָּׁה׃ |

| 14 | When she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field; and she alighted from her ass, and Caleb said to her, "What do you wish?" | | וַיְהִי בְּבֹואָהּ וַתְּסִיתֵהוּ לִשְׁאֹול מֵאֵת־אָבִיהָ הַשָּׂדֶה וַתִּצְנַח מֵעַל הַחֲמֹור וַיֹּאמֶר־לָהּ כָּלֵב מַה־לָּךְ׃ |

| 15 | She said to him, "Give me a present; since you have set me in the land of the Negeb, give me also springs of water." And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs. | | וַתֹּאמֶר לֹו הָבָה־לִּי בְרָכָה כִּי אֶרֶץ הַנֶּגֶב נְתַתָּנִי וְנָתַתָּה לִי גֻּלֹּת מָיִם וַיִּתֶּן־לָהּ כָּלֵב אֵת גֻּלֹּת עִלִּית וְאֵת גֻּלֹּת תַּחְתִּית׃ ף |

| 16 | And the descendants of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, went up with the people of Judah from the city of palms into the wilderness of Judah, which lies in the Negeb near Arad; and they went and settled with the people. | Victories of the men of Benjamin & Judah. Jdg.1.16-21 | וּבְנֵי קֵינִי חֹתֵן מֹשֶׁה עָלוּ מֵעִיר הַתְּמָרִים אֶת־בְּנֵי יְהוּדָה מִדְבַּר יְהוּדָה אֲשֶׁר בְּנֶגֶב עֲרָד וַיֵּלֶךְ וַיֵּשֶׁב אֶת־הָעָם׃ |

| 17 | And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they defeated the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. So the name of the city was called Hormah. | | וַיֵּלֶךְ יְהוּדָה אֶת־שִׁמְעֹון אָחִיו וַיַּכּוּ אֶת־הַכְּנַעֲנִי יֹושֵׁב צְפַת וַיַּחֲרִימוּ אֹותָהּ וַיִּקְרָא אֶת־שֵׁם־הָעִיר חָרְמָה׃ |

| 18 | Judah also took Gaza with its territory, and Ashkelon with its territory, and Ekron with its territory. | | וַיִּלְכֹּד יְהוּדָה אֶת־עַזָּה וְאֶת־גְּבוּלָהּ וְאֶת־אַשְׁקְלֹון וְאֶת־גְּבוּלָהּ וְאֶת־עֶקְרֹון וְאֶת־גְּבוּלָהּ׃ |

| 19 | And Yahweh was with Judah, and he took possession of the hill country, but he could not drive out the inhabitants of the plain, because they had chariots of iron. | | וַיְהִי יְהוָה אֶת־יְהוּדָה וַיֹּרֶשׁ אֶת־הָהָר כִּי לֹא לְהֹורִישׁ אֶת־יֹשְׁבֵי הָעֵמֶק כִּי־רֶכֶב בַּרְזֶל לָהֶם׃ |

| 20 | And Hebron was given to Caleb, as Moses had said; and he drove out from it the three sons of Anak. | | וַיִּתְּנוּ לְכָלֵב אֶת־חֶבְרֹון כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר מֹשֶׁה וַיֹּורֶשׁ מִשָּׁם אֶת־שְׁלֹשָׁה בְּנֵי הָעֲנָק׃ |
|
| 21 | But the people of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who dwelt in Jerusalem; so the Jebusites have dwelt with the people of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day. | | וְאֶת־הַיְבוּסִי יֹשֵׁב יְרוּשָׁלִַם לֹא הֹורִישׁוּ בְּנֵי בִנְיָמִן וַיֵּשֶׁב הַיְבוּסִי אֶת־בְּנֵי בִנְיָמִן בִּירוּשָׁלִַם עַד הַיֹּום הַזֶּה׃ ס |
