New English Bible (New Testament) | Passage | New Testament in Greek (UBS.Ed.26)
If, then, these sacrifices cleanse the copies of heavenly things, those heavenly things themselves require better sacrifices to cleanse them.
For Christ has entered, not that sanctuary made by men's hands which is only a symbol of the reality, but heaven itself, to appear now before God on our behalf.
Nor is he there to offer himself again and again, as the high priest enters the sanctuary year by year with blood not his own.
If that were so, he would have had to suffer many times since the world was made. But as it is, he has appeared once and for all at the climax of history to abolish sin by the sacrifice of himself. |
And as it is the lot of men to die once, and after death comes judgement, | καὶ καθ' ὁσον ἀπόκειται τοῖς ἀνθρώποις ἀπαξ ἀποθανεῖν, μετὰ δὲ τοῦτο κρίσις, |
so Christ was offered once to bear the burden of men's sins, Or: to remove men's sins. and will appear a second time, sin done away, to bring salvation to those who are watching for him. |
| 10 1 | FOR THE LAW CONTAINS but a shadow, and no true image, One witness reads: a shadow and likeness ... of the good things which were to come; it provides for the same sacrifices year after year, and with these it can never bring the worshippers to perfection for all time. Or: bring to perfection the worshippers who come continually.
If it could, these sacrifices would surely have ceased to be offered, because the worshippers, cleansed once for all, would no longer have any sense of sin.
But instead, in these sacrifices year after year sins are brought to mind, | ἀλλ' ἐν αὐταῖς ἀνάμνησις ἀμαρτιῶν κατ' ἐνιαυτόν, |
because sins can never be removed by the blood of bulls and goats. |
| 5 | That is why, at his coming into the world, he says:
but thou hast prepared a body for me. | - Sacrifices and offerings thou hast not desired Hb.10.5-7 | Ps.40.6-8 | Διὸ εἰσερχόμενος εἰς τὸν κόσμον λέγει, Θυσίαν καὶ προσφορὰν οὐκ ἠθέλησας, |
Whole-offerings and sin-offerings thou didst not delight in. |
Then I said, "Here am I: as it is written of me in the scroll, I have come, O God, to do thy will."' |
First he says, 'Sacrifices and offerings, whole-offerings and sin-offerings, thou didst not desire nor delight in'—although the Law prescribes them— | - Thou hast neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices Hb.10.8 | Ps.40.6 | ἀνώτερον λέγων ὅτι Θυσίας καὶ προσφορὰς καὶ ὁλοκαυτώματα καὶ περὶ ἁμαρτίας οὐκ ἠθέλησας οὐδὲ εὐδόκησας, αἱτινες κατὰ νόμον προσφέρονται,
and then he says, 'I have come to do thy will.' He thus annuls the former to establish the latter. | - Lo, I have come to do thy will.
And it is by the will of God that we have been consecrated, through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once and for all. |
Every priest stands performing his service daily and offering time after time the same sacrifices, which can never remove sins. |
But Christ offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, and took his seat at the right hand of God, | - he sat down at the right hand of God Hb.10.12 | Ps.110.1 | οὗτος δὲ μίαν ὑπὲρ ἀμαρτιῶν προσενέγκας θυσίαν εἰς τὸ διηνεκὲς ἐκάθισεν ἐν δεξιᾷ τοῦ θεοῦ,
where he waits henceforth until his enemies are made his footstool. | - his enemies should be made a stool for his feet Hb.10.13 | Ps.110.1 | τὸ λοιπὸν ἐκδεχόμενος ἕως τεθῶσιν οἱ ἐχθροὶ αὐτοῦ ὑποπόδιον τῶν ποδῶν αὐτοῦ·
For by one offering he has perfected for all time those who are thus consecrated. |
Here we have also the testimony of the Holy Spirit: he first says, | Μαρτυρεῖ δὲ ἡμῖν καὶ τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ ἀγιον· μετὰ γὰρ τὸ εἰρηκέναι, |
'This is the covenant which I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will set my laws in their hearts and write them on their understanding'; | - I will put my laws on their hearts Hb.10.16 | Jr.31.33 | Αὕτη ἡ διαθήκη ἣν διαθήσομαι πρὸς αὐτοὺς μετὰ τὰς ἡμέρας ἐκείνας, λέγει κύριος, διδοὺς νόμους μου ἐπὶ καρδίας αὐτῶν, καὶ ἐπὶ τὴν διάνοιαν αὐτῶν ἐπιγράψω αὐτούς,
then he adds, 'and their sins and wicked deeds I will remember no more at all.' | - I will remember their sins and their misdeeds no more.
And where these have been forgiven, there is no longer any offering for sin. |
