3 | New English Bible (New Testament) | Passage | New Testament in Greek (UBS.Ed.26) |
7 | 'TODAY', THEREFORE, as the Holy Spirit says—
| A Rest for the People of God Hb.3.7-4.13 | Διό,
8 | Do not grow stubborn as in those days of rebellion, at that time of testing in the desert, | - do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion Hb.3.8 | Ex.17.7 | Lv.20.2 | μὴ σκληρύνητε τὰς καρδίας ὑμῶν ὡς ἐν τῷ παραπικρασμῷ, κατὰ τὴν ἡμέραν τοῦ πειρασμοῦ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ, |
9 | where your forefathers tried me and tested me, and saw Or: though they saw ... the things I did for forty years.
10 | And so, I was indignant with that generation and I said. Their hearts are for ever astray, they would not discern my ways; | διὸ προσώχθισα τῇ γενεᾷ ταύτῃ καὶ εἶπον, Ἀεὶ πλανῶνται τῇ καρδίᾳ· αὐτοὶ δὲ οὐκ ἔγνωσαν τὰς ὁδούς μου·
11 | as I vowed in my anger, they shall never enter my rest.' | - They shall never enter my rest. |
12 | See to it, brothers, that no one among you has the wicked, faithless heart of a deserter from the living God; | Βλέπετε, ἀδελφοί, μήποτε ἐσται ἐν τινι ὑμῶν καρδία πονηρὰ ἀπιστίας ἐν τῷ ἀποστῆναι ἀπὸ θεοῦ ζῶντος,
13 | but day by day, while that word 'Today' still sounds in your ears, encourage one another, so that no one of you is made stubborn by the wiles of sin.
14 | For we have become Christ's partners Or: have been given a share in Christ. if only we keep our original confidence firm to the end.
15 | When Scripture says, 'Today if you hear his voice, do not grow stubborn as in those days of rebellion', | - Today, when you hear his voice Hb.3.15 | Ps.95.7-8 | ἐν τῷ λέγεσθαι, Σήμερον ἐὰν τῆς φωνῆς αὐτοῦ ἀκούσητε, |
16 | who, I ask, were those who heard and rebelled? All those, surely, whom Moses had led out of Egypt. | τίνες γὰρ ἀκούσαντες παρεπίκραναν; ἀλλ' οὐ πάντες οἱ ἐξελθόντες ἐξ Αἰγύπτου διὰ Μωϋσέως;
17 | And with whom was God indignant for forty years? With those, surely, who had sinned, whose bodies lay where they fell in the desert. | - And with whom was he provoked forty years?
18 | And to whom did he vow that they should not enter his rest, if not to those who had refused to believe? | - And to whom did he swear Hb.3.18 | Lv.14.22-23 | τίσιν δὲ ὤμοσεν μὴ εἰσελεύσεσθαι εἰς τὴν κατάπαυσιν αὐτοῦ εἰ μὴ τοῖς ἀπειθήσασιν; |
19 | We perceive that it was unbelief which prevented their entering.
4 1 | Therefore we must have before us the fear that while the promise of entering his rest remains open, one or another among you should be found to have missed his chance.
2 | For indeed we have heard the good news, as they did. But in them the message they heard did no good, because it met with no faith in those who heard of it.
3 | It is we, we who have become believers, who enter the rest referred to in the words, 'As I vowed in my anger, they shall never enter my rest.' Yet God's work has been finished ever since the world was created; | - As I swore in my wrath Hb.4.3 | Ps.95.11 | εἰσερχόμεθα γὰρ εἰς τὴν κατάπαυσιν οἱ πιστεύσαντες, καθὼς εἰρηκεν, Ὡς ὤμοσα ἐν τῇ ὀργῇ μου, |
4 | for does not Scripture somewhere speak thus of the seventh day: 'God rested from his work on the seventh day'?— | - And God rested on the seventh day Hb.4.4 | Gn.2.2 | εἰρηκεν γάρ που περὶ τῆς ἑβδόμης οὑτως, Kαὶ κατέπαυσεν ὁ θεὸς ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ ἑβδόμῃ ἀπὸ πάντων τῶν ἔργων αὐτοῦ· |
5 | and once again in the passage above we read, 'They shall never enter my rest.' | - They shall never enter my rest. |
6 | The fact remains that someone must enter it, and since those who first heard the good news failed to enter through unbelief, | ἐπεὶ οὖν ἀπολείπεται τινὰς εἰσελθεῖν εἰς αὐτήν, καὶ οἱ πρότερον εὐαγγελισθέντες οὐκ εἰσῆλθον δῖ ἀπείθειαν,
7 | God fixes another day. Speaking through the lips of David after many long years, he uses the words already quoted: 'Today if you hear his voice, do not grow stubborn.' | - Today, when you hear his voice Hb.4.7-11 | Ps.95.7-8 | πάλιν τινὰ ὁρίζει ἡμέραν, Σήμερον, ἐν Δαυὶδ λέγων μετὰ τοσοῦτον χρόνον, καθὼς προείρηται, Σήμερον ἐὰν τῆς φωνῆς αὐτοῦ ἀκούσητε, |
8 | If Joshua had given them rest. God would not thus have spoken of another day after that.
9 | Therefore, a sabbath rest still awaits the people of God; | ἀρα ἀπολείπεται σαββατισμὸς τῷ λαῷ τοῦ θεοῦ·
10 | for anyone who enters God's rest, rests from his own work as God did from his.
11 | Let us then make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by following this evil example of unbelief.
12 | For the word of God is alive and active. It cuts more keenly than any two-edged sword, piercing as far as the place where life and spirit, joints and marrow, divide. It sifts the purposes and thoughts of the heart.
13 | There is nothing in creation that can hide from him; everything lies naked and exposed to the eyes of the One with whom we have to reckon. |
