14 katapi NEW STUDY BIBLE Passage New Testament in Greek (UBS.Ed.26)

14 1Make love your aim, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.
2For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.
3On the other hand, he who prophesies speaks to men for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.
4He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.
5Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than he who speaks in tongues, unless some one interprets, so that the church may be edified.
6Now, brethren, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how shall I benefit you unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching?  Νῦν δέ, ἀδελφοί, ἐὰν ἐλθω πρὸς ὑμᾶς γλώσσαις λαλῶν, τί ὑμᾶς ὠφελήσω, ἐὰν μὴ ὑμῖν λαλήσω ἢ ἐν ἀποκαλύψει ἢ ἐν γνώσει ἢ ἐν προφητείᾳ ἢ ἐν διδαχῇ;
7If even lifeless instruments, such as the flute or the harp, do not give distinct notes, how will anyone know what is played?  ὁμως τὰ ἀψυχα φωνὴν διδόντα, εἰτε αὐλὸς εἰτε κιθάρα, ἐὰν διαστολὴν τοῖς φθόγγοις μὴ δῷ, πῶς γνωσθήσεται τὸ αὐλούμενον ἢ τὸ κιθαριζόμενον;
8And if the bugle gives an indistinct sound, who will get ready for battle?  καὶ γὰρ ἐὰν ἀδηλον σάλπιγξ φωνὴν δῷ, τίς παρασκευάσεται εἰς πόλεμον;
9So with yourselves; if you in a tongue utter speech that is not intelligible, how will anyone know what is said? For you will be speaking into the air.
10There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning;
11but if I do not know the meaning of the language, I shall be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me.
12So with yourselves; since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church.
13Therefore, he who speaks in a tongue should pray for the power to interpret.
14For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful.
15What am I to do? I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the mind also; I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the mind also.
16Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsider say the "Amen"to your thanksgiving when he does not know what you are saying?  ἐπεὶ ἐὰν εὐλογῇς ἐν πνεύματι, ὁ ἀναπληρῶν τὸν τόπον τοῦ ἰδιώτου πῶς ἐρεῖ τὸ Ἀμήν ἐπὶ τῇ σῇ εὐχαριστίᾳ, ἐπειδὴ τί λέγεις οὐκ οἶδεν;
17For you may give thanks well enough, but the other man is not edified.
18I thank God that I speak in tongues more than you all; εὐχαριστῶ τῷ θεῷ, πάντων ὑμῶν μᾶλλον γλώσσαις λαλῶ·
19nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind, in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue.
20Brethren, do not be children in your thinking; be babes in evil, but in thinking be mature.
21In the law it is written, "By men of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord." - By men of strange tongues 1Cor.14.21 | Is.28.11-12 | Dt.28.49ἐν τῷ νόμῳ γέγραπται ὅτι

καὶ οὐδ'

22Thus, tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is not for unbelievers but for believers.
23If, therefore, the whole church assembles and all speak in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are mad? Ἐὰν οὖν συνέλθῃ ἡ ἐκκλησία ὁλη ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ καὶ πάντες λαλῶσιν γλώσσαις, εἰσέλθωσιν δὲ ἰδιῶται ἢ ἀπιστοι, οὐκ ἐροῦσιν ὅτι μαίνεσθὲ;
24But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all, ἐὰν δὲ πάντες προφητεύωσιν, εἰσέλθῃ δέ τις ἀπιστος ἢ ἰδιώτης, ἐλέγχεται ὑπὸ πάντων, ἀνακρίνεται ὑπὸ πάντων,
25the secrets of his heart are disclosed; and so, falling on his face, he will worship God and declare that God is really among you.

Notes: This page displays passages from the katapi NEW STUDY BIBLE.
The katapi NEW STUDY BIBLE is a very light revision of the RSV. The changes are: (1) In places where 'the LORD', 'O LORD' occurs in the RSV, (it represents the tetragrammaton - YHWH - which is in the hebrew text), I have used the name 'Yahweh'.
(2) I have removed the quotation marks and hyphens that were used in so many names in the RSV as an aid to correct pronunciation. This now brings it in line with all other English versions, and makes any word-search more accurate.
(3) I have changed all (I hope!) of the RSV archaic language sections to modern.

The katapi New Study Bible reference section displays links to parallel passages, and to direct quotations by New Testament authors to Old Testament passages. Quotations of OT passages by NT authors can in most cases be viewed within their context of the OT passage as a whole, with the quoted text displayed, against a subdued background.
