9 New English Bible (New Testament) Passage New Testament in Greek (UBS.Ed.26)

9 1I AM SPEAKING the truth as a Christian, and my own conscience, enlightened by the Holy Spirit, assures me it is no lie:God's Election of Israel Ro.9.1-18Ἀλήθειαν λέγω ἐν Χριστῷ, οὐ ψεύδομαι, συμμαρτυρούσης μοι τῆς συνειδήσεώς μου ἐν πνεύματι ἀγίῳ,
2in my heart there is great grief and unceasing sorrow.
3For I could even pray to be outcast from Christ myself for the sake of my brothers, my natural kinsfolk.
4They are Israelites: they were made God's sons, theirs is the splendour of the divine presence, theirs the covenants, the law, the temple worship, and the promises.
5Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them, in natural descent, sprang the Messiah. Greek: Christ. May God, supreme above all, be blessed for ever! Amen. Or: sprang the Messiah, supreme above all, God blessed for ever; Or: sprang the Messiah, who is supreme above all. Blessed be God for ever!
6It is impossible that the word of God should have proved false. For not all descendants of Israel are truly Israel, nor, Οὐχ οἷον δὲ ὅτι ἐκπέπτωκεν ὁ λόγος τοῦ θεοῦ.
7because they are Abraham's offspring, are they all his true children; Or: all children of God. but, in the words of Scripture, 'Through the line of Isaac your posterity shall be traced.' Or: God's call shall be for your descendants in the line of Isaac.- Through Isaac shall your descendants be named Ro.9.7 | Gn.21.12οὐδ' ὅτι εἰσὶν σπέρμα Ἀβραάμ, πάντες τέκνα, ἀλλ', Ἐν Ἰσαὰκ κληθήσεταί σοι σπέρμα.
8That is to say, it is not those born in the course of nature who are children of God; it is the children born through God's promise who are reckoned as Abraham's descendants.
9For the promise runs: 'At the time fixed I will come, and Sarah shall have a son.'
- About this time I will return and Sarah shall have a son Ro.9.9 | Gn.18.10-14ἐπαγγελίας γὰρ ὁ λόγος οὗτος, Kατὰ τὸν καιρὸν τοῦτον ἐλεύσομαι καὶ ἔσται τῇ Σάρρᾳ υἱός.
10But that is not all, for Rebekah's children had one and the same father, our ancestor Isaac; οὐ μόνον δέ, ἀλλὰ καὶ Ῥεβέκκα ἐξ ἑνὸς κοίτην ἐχουσα, Ἰσαὰκ τοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν·
11and yet, in order that God's selective purpose might stand, based not upon men's deeds but upon the call of God,
12she was told, even before they were born, when they had as yet done nothing, good or ill, 'The elder shall be servant to the younger';- The elder will serve the younger Ro.9.12 | Gn.25.23οὐκ ἐξ ἐργων ἀλλ' ἐκ τοῦ καλοῦντος, ἐρρέθη αὐτῇ ὅτι Ὁ μείζων δουλεύσει τῷ ἐλάσσον·
13and that accords with the text of Scripture, 'Jacob I loved and Esau I hated.'
- Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated Ro.9.13 | Mal.1.2-3καθὼς γέγραπται,

Tὸν Ἰακὼβ ἠγάπησα,

14What shall we say to that? Is God to be charged with injustice? By no means.
15For he says to Moses, 'Where I show mercy, I will show mercy, and where I pity, I will pity.'- I will have mercy on whom I have mercy Ro.9.15 | Ex.33.19τῷ Μωϋσεῖ γὰρ λέγει,

16Thus it does not depend on man's will or effort, but on God's mercy.
17For Scripture says to Pharaoh, 'I have raised you up for this very purpose, to exhibit my power in my dealings with you, and to spread my fame over all the world.'- I have raised you up for the very purpose Ro.9.17 | Ex.9.16λέγει γὰρ ἡ γραφὴ τῷ Φαραὼ ὅτι Εἰς αὐτὸ τοῦτο ἐξήγειρά σε ὅπως ἐνδείξωμαι ἐν σοὶ τὴν δύναμίν μου, καὶ ὅπως διαγγελῇ τὸ ὄνομά μου ἐν πάσῃ τῇ γῇ.
18Thus he not only shows mercy as he chooses, but also makes men stubborn as he chooses.
19You will say, 'Then why does God blame a man? For who can resist his will?'God's Wrath and Mercy Ro.9.19-29Ἐρεῖς μοι οὖν, Τί οὖν ἐτι μέμφεταὶ τῷ γὰρ βουλήματι αὐτοῦ τίς ἀνθέστηκεν;
20Who are you, sir, to answer God back? Can the pot speak to the potter and say, 'Why did you make me like this?'?- Will what is molded say to its molder Ro.9.20 | Is.29.16 | Is.45.9ὦ ἄνθρωπε, μενοῦνγε σὺ τίς εἶ ὁ ἀνταποκρινόμενος τῷ θεῷ; μὴ ἐρεῖ τὸ πλάσμα τῷ πλάσαντι, Τί με ἐποίησας οὑτως;
21Surely the potter can do what he likes with the clay. Is he not free to make out of the same lump two vessels, one to be treasured, the other for common use?
- Has the potter no right over the clay Ro.9.21 | Jr.18.6ἢ οὐκ ἐχει ἐξουσίαν ὁ κεραμεὺς τοῦ πηλοῦ ἐκ τοῦ αὐτοῦ φυράματος ποιῆσαι ὃ μὲν εἰς τιμὴν σκεῦος, ὃ δὲ εἰς ἀτιμίαν;
22But what if God, desiring to exhibit Or: although he had the will to exhibit ... his retribution at work and to make his power known, tolerated very patiently those vessels which were objects of retribution due for destruction, εἰ δὲ θέλων ὁ θεὸς ἐνδείξασθαι τὴν ὀργὴν καὶ γνωρίσαι τὸ δυνατὸν αὐτοῦ ἠνεγκεν ἐν πολλῇ μακροθυμίᾳ σκεύη ὀργῆς κατηρτισμένα εἰς ἀπώλειαν,
23and did so in order to make known the full wealth of his splendour upon vessels which were objects of mercy, and which from the first had been prepared for this splendour?
24Such vessels are we, whom he has called from among Gentiles as well as Jews, οὓς καὶ ἐκάλεσεν ἡμᾶς οὐ μόνον ἐξ Ἰουδαίων ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐξ ἐθνῶν;
25as it says in the Book of Hosea: 'Those who were not my people I will call My People, and the unloved nation I will call My Beloved.- Those who were not my people Ro.9.25 | Hs.2.23ὡς καὶ ἐν τῷ Ὡσηὲ λέγει,

26For in the very place where they were told "you are no people of mine", they shall be called Sons of the living God.'- You are not my people Ro.9.26 | Hs.1.10καὶ ἔσται ἐν τῷ τόπῳ οὗ ἐρρέθη αὐτοῖς, Οὐ λαός μου ὑμεῖς,
27But Isaiah makes this proclamation about Israel: 'Though the Israelites be countless as the sands of the sea, only a remnant that shall be saved;- only a remnant of them will be saved Ro.9.27-28 | Is.10.22-23Ἠσαΐας δὲ κράζει ὑπὲρ τοῦ Ἰσραήλ, Ἐὰν ᾖ ὁ ἀριθμὸς τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ ὡς ἡ ἄμμος τῆς θαλάσσης, τὸ ὑπόλειμμα σωθήσεται·
28for the Lord's sentence on the land will be summary and final';
29as also he said previously, 'If the Lord of Hosts had not left us the mere germ of a nation, we should have become like Sodom, and no better than Gomorrah.'
- If the Lord of hosts had not left us children Ro.9.29 | Is.1.9καὶ καθὼς προείρηκεν Ἠσαΐας,

30Then what are we to say? That Gentiles, who made no effort after righteousness, nevertheless achieved it, a righteousness based on faith;Israel and the Gospel Ro.9.30-10.4Τί οὖν ἐροῦμεν; ὅτι ἐθνη τὰ μὴ διώκοντα δικαιοσύνην κατέλαβεν δικαιοσύνην, δικαιοσύνην δὲ τὴν ἐκ πίστεως·
31whereas Israel made great efforts after a law of righteousness, but never attained to it.
32Why was this? Because their efforts were not based on faith, but (as they supposed) on deeds. They stumbled over the 'stone' διὰ τί; ὅτι οὐκ ἐκ πίστεως ἀλλ' ὡς ἐξ ἐργων· προσέκοψαν τῷ λίθῳ τοῦ προσκόμματος,
33mentioned in Scripture: 'Here I lay in Zion a stone to trip over, a rock to stumble against; but he who has faith in him will not be put to shame.'

- Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone Ro.9.33 | Is.28.16καθὼς γέγραπται,

10 1BROTHERS, MY DEEPEST DESIRE and my prayer to God is for their salvation.
2To their zeal for God I can testify; but it is an ill-informed zeal.
3For they ignore God's way of righteousness, and try to set up their own, and therefore they have not submitted themselves to God's righteousness.
4For Christ ends the law and brings righteousness for everyone who has faith. Or: Christ is the end of the law as a way to righteousness for everyone who has faith.
5Of legal righteousness Moses writes, 'The man who does this shall gain life by it.'Salvation for All Ro.10.5-21Μωϋσῆς γὰρ γράφει τὴν δικαιοσύνην τὴν ἐκ τοῦ νόμου ὅτι ὁ ποιήσας αὐτὰ ἄνθρωπος ζήσεται ἐν αὐτῇ.
6But the righteousness that comes by faith says, 'Do not say to yourself, "Who can go up to heaven?"' (that is to bring Christ down),- Do not say in your heart Ro.10.6 | Dt.9.4ἡ δὲ ἐκ πίστεως δικαιοσύνη οὑτως λέγει, Mὴ εἴπῃς ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ σου, Tίς ἀναβήσεται εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν; τοῦτ' ἐστιν Χριστὸν καταγαγεῖν·
7'or, "Who can go down to the abyss?"' (to bring Christ up from the dead).- Who will descend into the abyss?
8But what does it say? 'The word is near you: it is upon your lips and in your heart.' This means the word of faith which we proclaim.

9If on your lips is the confession, 'Jesus is Lord', and in your heart the faith that God raised him from the dead, then you will find salvation.
10For the faith that leads to righteousness is in the heart, and the confession that leads to salvation is upon the lips.
11Scripture says, 'Everyone who has faith in him will be saved from shame'?everyone:- No one who believes in him will be put to shame.
12there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, because the same Lord is Lord of all, and is rich enough for the need of all who invoke him.
13For everyone, as it says again—'everyone who invokes the name of the Lord will be saved'.- Everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved Ro.10.13 | Jl.2.32Πᾶς γὰρ ὃς ἂν ἐπικαλέσηται τὸ ὄνομα κυρίου σωθήσεται.
14How could they invoke one in whom they had no faith? And how could they have faith in one they had never heard of? And how hear without someone to spread the news? Πῶς οὖν ἐπικαλέσωνται εἰς ὃν οὐκ ἐπίστευσαν; πῶς δὲ πιστεύσωσιν οὗ οὐκ ἠκουσαν; πῶς δὲ ἀκούσωσιν χωρὶς κηρύσσοντος;
15And how could anyone spread is the news without a commission to do so? And that is what Scripture affirms: 'How welcome are the feet of the messengers of good news!'
- How beautiful are the feet Ro.10.15 | Is.52.7 | Na.1.15πῶς δὲ κηρύξωσιν ἐὰν μὴ ἀποσταλῶσιν; καθὼς γέγραπται, Ὡς ὡραῖοι οἱ πόδες τῶν εὐαγγελιζομένων τὰ ἀγαθά.
16But not all have responded to the good news. For Isaiah says, 'Lord, who has believed our message?'- Lord, who has believed Ro.10.16 | Is.53.1Ἀλλ' οὐ πάντες ὑπήκουσαν τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ· Ἠσαΐας γὰρ λέγει, Kύριε, τίς ἐπίστευσεν τῇ ἀκοῇ ἡμῶν;
17We conclude that faith is awakened by the message, and the message that awakens it comes through the word of Christ.
18But, I ask, can it be that they never heard it? Of course they did: 'Their voice has sounded all over the earth, and their words to the bounds of the inhabited world.'- Their voice has gone out to all the earth Ro.10.18 | Ps.19.4ἀλλὰ λέγω, μὴ οὐκ ἠκουσαν; μενοῦνγε,

19But, I ask again, can it be that Israel failed to recognize the message? In reply, I first cite Moses, who says, 'I will use a nation that is no nation to stir your envy, and a foolish nation to rouse your anger.'- I will make you jealous of those who are not a nation Ro.10.19 | Dt.32.21ἀλλὰ λέγω, μὴ Ἰσραὴλ οὐκ ἐγνὼ πρῶτος Μωϋσῆς λέγει,

20But Isaiah is still more daring: 'I was found', he says, 'by those who were not looking for me; I was clearly shown to those who never asked about me';- I have been found by those who did not seek me I have shown myself to those who did not ask for m Ro.10.20 | Is.65.1Ἠσαΐας δὲ ἀποτολμᾷ καὶ λέγει,

21while to Israel he says, 'All day long I have stretched out my hands to an unruly and defiant people.'

11 1I ASK THEN, has God rejected his people? I cannot believe it! I am an Israelite myself, of the stock of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
2No! God has not rejected the people which he acknowledged of old as his own. You know (do you not?) what Scripture says in the story of Elijah—how Elijah pleads with God against Israel:- God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Do you not know what the scripture says of Eli Ro.11.2 | Ps.94.14οὐκ ἀπώσατο ὁ θεὸς τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ ὃν προέγνω.
3'Lord, they have killed thy prophets, they have torn down thine altars, and I alone am left, and they are seeking my life.'- "Lord, they have killed thy prophets, they have demolished thy altars, and I alone am left, Ro.11.3 | 1Kgs.19.10-14Κύριε, τοὺς προφήτας σου ἀπέκτειναν, τὰ θυσιαστήριά σου κατέσκαψαν, κἀγὼ ὑπελείφθην μόνος, καὶ ζητοῦσιν τὴν ψυχήν μου.
4But what does the divine voice say to him? 'I have left myself seven thousand men who have not knelt to Baal.'- But what is God's reply to him? "I have kept for myself seven thousand men who have not bowed th Ro.11.4 | 1Kgs.19.18ἀλλὰ τί λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ χρηματισμός; Kατέλιπον ἐμαυτῷ ἑπτακισχιλίους ἄνδρας, οἵτινες οὐκ ἔκαμψαν γόνυ τῇ Βάαλ.
5In just the same way at the present time a 'remnant' has come into being, selected by the grace of God.
6But if it is by grace, then it does not rest on deeds done, or grace would cease to be grace.
7What follows? What Israel sought, Israel has not achieved, but the selected few have achieved it. The rest were made blind to the truth, τί οὖν; ὃ ἐπιζητεῖ Ἰσραήλ, τοῦτο οὐκ ἐπέτυχεν, ἡ δὲ ἐκλογὴ ἐπέτυχεν· οἱ δὲ λοιποὶ ἐπωρώθησαν,
8exactly as it stands written: 'God brought upon them a numbness of spirit; he gave them blind eyes and deaf ears, and so it is still.'- eyes that should not see and ears that should not hear Ro.11.8 | Dt.29.4 | Is.29.10καθὼς γέγραπται,

9Similarly David says:
    'May their table be a snare and a trap,
    both stumbling-block and retribution!
- Let their table become a snare and a trap Ro.11.9-10 | Ps.69.22-23 | Ps.35.8καὶ Δαυὶδ λέγει,

10May their eyes be darkened so that they lose their sight!
Bow down their backs unceasingly!'
11I now ask, did their failure mean complete downfall? Far from it! Because they offended, salvation has come to the Gentiles, to stir Israel to emulation.The Salvation of the Gentiles Ro.11.11-24Λέγω οὖν, μὴ ἐπταισαν ἵνα πέσωσιν; μὴ γένοιτο· ἀλλὰ τῷ αὐτῶν παραπτώματι ἡ σωτηρία τοῖς ἐθνεσιν, εἰς τὸ παραζηλῶσαι αὐτούς.
12But if their offence means the enrichment of the world, and if their falling-off means the enrichment of the Gentiles, how much more their coming to full strength!
13But I have something to say to you Gentiles. I am a missionary to the Gentiles, and as such I give all honour to that ministry
14when I try to stir emulation in the men of my own race, and so to save some of them.
15For if their rejection has meant the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance mean? εἰ γὰρ ἡ ἀποβολὴ αὐτῶν καταλλαγὴ κόσμου, τίς ἡ πρόσλημψις εἰ μὴ ζωὴ ἐκ νεκρῶν;
16Nothing less than life from the dead! If the first portion of dough is consecrated, so is the whole lump.
17If the root is consecrated, so are the branches. But if some of the branches have been lopped off, and you, a wild olive, have been grafted in among them, and have come to share the same root and sap as the olive, do not make yourself superior to the branches.
18If you do so, remember that it is not you who sustain the root: the root sustains you.
19You will say, 'Branches were lopped off so that I might be grafted in.'
20Very well: they were lopped off for lack of faith, and by faith you hold your place. Put away your pride, and be on your guard;
21for if God did not spare the native branches, no more will he spare you.
22Observe the kindness and the severity of God—severity to those who fell away, divine kindness to you, if only you remain within its scope; otherwise you too will be cut off, ἰδε οὖν χρηστότητα καὶ ἀποτομίαν θεοῦ· ἐπὶ μὲν τοὺς πεσόντας ἀποτομία, ἐπὶ δὲ σὲ χρηστότης θεοῦ, ἐὰν ἐπιμένῃς τῇ χρηστότητι, ἐπεὶ καὶ σὺ ἐκκοπήσῃ.
23whereas they, if they do not continue faithless, will be grafted in; for it is in God's power to graft them in again.
24For if you were cut from your native wild olive and against all nature grafted into the cultivated olive, how much more readily will they, the natural olive-branches, be grafted into their native stock!
25For there is a deep truth here, my brothers, of which I want you to take account, so that you may not be complacent about your own discernment: this partial blindness has come upon Israel only until the Gentiles have been admitted in full strength;The Restoration of Israel Ro.11.25-36Οὐ γὰρ θέλω ὑμᾶς ἀγνοεῖν, ἀδελφοί, τὸ μυστήριον τοῦτο, ἵνα μὴ ἦτε παρ' ἑαυτοῖς φρόνιμοι, ὅτι πώρωσις ἀπὸ μέρους τῷ Ἰσραὴλ γέγονεν ἀχρις οὗ τὸ πλήρωμα τῶν ἐθνῶν ε ἰσέλθῃ,
26when that has happened, the whole of Israel will be saved, in agreement with the text of Scripture:
    'From Zion shall come the Deliverer;
    he shall remove wickedness from Jacob.
- The Deliverer will come from Zion Ro.11.26 | Is.59.20-21 | Ps.14.7καὶ οὑτως πᾶς Ἰσραὴλ σωθήσεται· καθὼς γέγραπται,

27And this is the covenant I will grant them,
when I take away their sins.'
- and this will be my covenant with them when I take away their sins.
28In the spreading of the Gospel they are treated as God's enemies for your sake; but God's choice stands, and they are his friends for the sake of the patriarchs.
29For the gracious gifts of God and his calling are irrevocable.
30Just as formerly you were disobedient to God, but now have received mercy in the time of their disobedience, so now, ὡσπερ γὰρ ὑμεῖς ποτε ἠπειθήσατε τῷ θεῷ, νῦν δὲ ἠλεήθητε τῇ τούτων ἀπειθείᾳ,
31when you receive mercy, they have proved disobedient, but only in order that they too may receive mercy.
32For in making all mankind prisoners to disobedience. God's purpose was to show mercy to all mankind.
33O depth of wealth, wisdom, and knowledge in God! How unsearchable his judgements, how untraceable his ways!
34Who knows the mind of the Lord? Who has been his counsellor?- For who has known the mind of the Lord Ro.11.34 | Is.40.13 | Jb.15.8 | Is.23.18Τίς γὰρ ἔγνω νοῦν κυρίου;
ἢ τίς σύμβουλος αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο;
35Who has ever made a gift to him, to receive a gift in return?- who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid? Ro.11.35 | Jb.41.11ἢ τίς προέδωκεν αὐτῷ,
καὶ ἀνταποδοθήσεται αὐτῷ;
36Source, Guide, and Goal of all that is-to him be glory for ever! Amen.
