8 katapi NEW STUDY BIBLE Passage New Testament in Greek (UBS.Ed.26)

26But an angel of the Lord said to Philip, "Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza." This is a desert road. Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch Ac.8.26-40 (Gaza Road, Judaea)Ἄγγελος δὲ κυρίου ἐλάλησεν πρὸς Φίλιππον λέγων, Ἀνάστηθι καὶ πορεύου κατὰ μεσημβρίαν ἐπὶ τὴν ὁδὸν τὴν καταβαίνουσαν ἀπὸ Ἰερουσαλὴμ εἰς Γάζαν· αὑτη ἐστὶν ἐρημος.
27And he rose and went. And behold, an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a minister of the Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of all her treasure, had come to Jerusalem to worship  καὶ ἀναστὰς ἐπορεύθη· καὶ ἰδοὺ ἀνὴρ Αἰθίοψ εὐνοῦχος δυνάστης Κανδάκης βασιλίσσης Αἰθιόπων, ὃς ἦν ἐπὶ πάσης τῆς γάζης αὐτῆς, ὃς ἐληλύθει προσκυνήσων εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ,
28and was returning; seated in his chariot, he was reading the prophet Isaiah.
29And the Spirit said to Philip, "Go up and join this chariot."
30So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and asked, "Do you understand what you are reading?"  προσδραμὼν δὲ ὁ Φίλιππος ἠκουσεν αὐτοῦ ἀναγινώσκοντος Ἠσαΐαν τὸν προφήτην, καὶ εἶπεν, Ἆρά γε γινώσκεις ἂ ἀναγινώσκεις;
31And he said, "How can I, unless someone guides me?" And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.
32Now the passage of the scripture which he was reading was this:

"As a sheep led to the slaughter
or a lamb before its shearer is dumb,
so he opens not his mouth.

- As a sheep led to the slaughter Ac.8.32-33 | Is.53.7-8ἡ δὲ περιοχὴ τῆς γραφῆς ἣν ἀνεγίνωσκεν ἦν αὑτη·

33In his humiliation justice was denied him.
Who can describe his generation?
For his life is taken up from the earth."
τὴν γενεὰν αὐτοῦ τίς διηγήσεται;
34And the eunuch said to Philip, "About whom, pray, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?"  Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ εὐνοῦχος τῷ Φιλίππῳ εἶπεν, Δέομαί σου, περὶ τίνος ὁ προφήτης λέγει τοῦτὸ περὶ ἑαυτοῦ ἢ περὶ ἑτέρου τινός;
35Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this scripture he told him the good news of Jesus.
36And as they went along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, "See, here is water! What is to prevent my being baptized?"  ὡς δὲ ἐπορεύοντο κατὰ τὴν ὁδόν, ἦλθον ἐπί τι ὑδωρ, καί φησιν ὁ εὐνοῦχος, Ἰδοὺ ὑδωρ· τί κωλύει με βαπτισθῆναὶ;
38And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.
39And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught up Philip; and the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing.
40But Philip was found at Azotus, and passing on he preached the gospel to all the towns till he came to Caesarea.

Notes: This page displays passages from the katapi NEW STUDY BIBLE.
The katapi NEW STUDY BIBLE is a very light revision of the RSV. The changes are: (1) In places where 'the LORD', 'O LORD' occurs in the RSV, (it represents the tetragrammaton - YHWH - which is in the hebrew text), I have used the name 'Yahweh'.
(2) I have removed the quotation marks and hyphens that were used in so many names in the RSV as an aid to correct pronunciation. This now brings it in line with all other English versions, and makes any word-search more accurate.
(3) I have changed all (I hope!) of the RSV archaic language sections to modern.

The katapi New Study Bible reference section displays links to parallel passages, and to direct quotations by New Testament authors to Old Testament passages. Quotations of OT passages by NT authors can in most cases be viewed within their context of the OT passage as a whole, with the quoted text displayed, against a subdued background.
