9 1 | AS HE WENT on his way Jesus saw a man blind from his birth. | The Healing of a Man Born Blind Jn.9.1-12 (Jerusalem) | Καὶ παράγων εἶδεν ἄνθρωπον τυφλὸν ἐκ γενετῆς. |
2 | His disciples put the question, 'Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents? Why was he born blind?'
3 | 'It is not that this man or his parents sinned,' Jesus answered; 'he was born blind that God's power might be displayed in curing him. |
4 | While daylight lasts we Some witnesses read: I must carry on the work of him who sent me, night comes, when no one can work. |
5 | While I am in the world I am the light of the world.'
6 | With these words he spat on the ground and made a paste with the spittle; he spread it on the man's eyes, | | ταῦτα εἰπὼν ἐπτυσεν χαμαὶ καὶ ἐποίησεν πηλὸν ἐκ τοῦ πτύσματος, καὶ ἐπέχρισεν αὐτοῦ τὸν πηλὸν ἐπὶ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς |
7 | and said to him, 'Go and wash in the pool of Siloam.' (The name means 'sent'.) The man went away and washed, and when he returned he could see.
8 | His neighbours and those who were accustomed to see him begging said, 'Is not this the man who used to sit and beg?'
9 | Others said, 'Yes, this is the man.' Others again said, 'No, but it is someone like him.' |
10 | The man himself said, 'I am the man.' They asked him, 'How were your eyes opened?'
11 | He replied, 'The man called Jesus made a paste and smeared my eyes with it, and told me to go to Siloam and wash. I went and washed, and gained my sight.' |
12 | 'Where is he?' they asked. He answered, 'I do not know.'
