New Testament in Greek (UBS.Ed.26) |
As it was near the time of the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. | The Cleansing of the Temple Jn.2.13-22 (Jerusalem) | Mt.21.12-13 | Mk.11.15-17 | Lk.19.45-46 | Καὶ ἐγγὺς ἦν τὸ πάσχα τῶν Ἰουδαίων, καὶ ἀνέβη εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα ὁ Ἰησοῦς.
There he found in the temple the dealers in cattle, sheep, and pigeons, and the money-changers seated at their tables.
Jesus made a whip of cords and drove them out of the temple, sheep, cattle, and all. He upset the tables of the money-changers, scattering their coins.
Then he turned on the dealers in pigeons: 'Take them out,' he said; 'you must not turn my Father's house into a market.'
His disciples recalled the words of Scripture, 'Zeal for thy house will destroy me.' | - Zeal for thy house will consume me Jn.2.17 | Ps.69.9 | Ἐμνήσθησαν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ὅτι γεγραμμένον ἐστίν, Ὁ ζῆλος τοῦ οἴκου σου καταφάγεταί με.
The Jews challenged Jesus: 'What sign', they asked, 'can you show as authority for your action?' | | ἀπεκρίθησαν οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ, Τί σημεῖον δεικνύεις ἡμῖν, ὅτι ταῦτα ποιεῖς;
'Destroy this temple,' Jesus replied, 'and in three days I will raise it again.' | | ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Λύσατε τὸν ναὸν τοῦτον καὶ ἐν τρισὶν ἡμέραις ἐγερῶ αὐτόν.
They said, 'It has taken forty-six years to build this temple. Are you going to raise it again in three days?' | | εἶπαν οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι, Τεσσεράκοντα καὶ ἓξ ἐτεσιν οἰκοδομήθη ὁ ναὸς οὗτος, καὶ σὺ ἐν τρισὶν ἡμέραις ἐγερεῖς αὐτόν;
But the temple he was speaking of was his body.
| 22 | After his resurrection his disciples recalled what he had said, and they believed the Scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.
