| 1 1 | WHEN ALL THINGS BEGAN, the Word already was. The Word dwelt with God, and what God was, the Word was. Or: The Word was at the creation. | The Word Became Flesh Jn.1.1-18 | Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν ὁ λόγος, καὶ ὁ λόγος ἦν πρὸς τὸν θεόν, καὶ θεὸς ἦν ὁ λόγος. |
| 2 | The Word, then, was with God at the beginning, | οὗτος ἦν ἐν ἀρχῇ πρὸς τὸν θεόν. | |
| 3 | and through him all things came to be; no single thing was created without him. | πάντα δῖ αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο, καὶ χωρὶς αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο οὐδὲ ἑν. ὃ γέγονεν | |
| 4 | All that came to be was alive with his life, Or: no single created thing came into being without him. There was life in him ... and that life was the light of men. | ἐν αὐτῷ ζωὴ ἦν, καὶ ἡ ζωὴ ἦν τὸ φῶς τῶν ἀνθρώπων· | |
| 5 | The light shines on in the dark, and the darkness has never mastered it. | καὶ τὸ φῶς ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ φαίνει, καὶ ἡ σκοτία αὐτὸ οὐ κατέλαβεν. | |
| 6 | There appeared a man named John, sent from God; | Ἐγένετο ἄνθρωπος ἀπεσταλμένος παρὰ θεοῦ, ὀνομα αὐτῷ Ἰωάννης· | |
| 7 | he came as a witness to testify to the light, that all might become believers through him. | οὗτος ἦλθεν εἰς μαρτυρίαν, ἵνα μαρτυρήσῃ περὶ τοῦ φωτός, ἵνα πάντες πιστεύσωσιν δῖ αὐτοῦ. | |
| 8 | He was not himself the light; he came to bear witness to the light. | οὐκ ἦν ἐκεῖνος τὸ φῶς, ἀλλ' ἵνα μαρτυρήσῃ περὶ τοῦ φωτός. | |
| 9 | The real light which enlightens every man was even then coming into the world. Or: The light was in being, light absolute, enlightening every man born unto the world. | Ἦν τὸ φῶς τὸ ἀληθινόν, ὃ φωτίζει πάντα ἄνθρωπον, ἐρχόμενον εἰς τὸν κόσμον. | |

| 11 | He entered his own realm, and his own would not receive him. | εἰς τὰ ἰδια ἦλθεν, καὶ οἱ ἰδιοι αὐτὸν οὐ παρέλαβον. | |
| 12 | But to all who did receive him, to those who have yielded him their allegiance, he gave the right to become children of God, | ὁσοι δὲ ἐλαβον αὐτόν, ἐδωκεν αὐτοῖς ἐξουσίαν τέκνα θεοῦ γενέσθαι, τοῖς πιστεύουσιν εἰς τὸ ὀνομα αὐτοῦ, | |
| 13 | not born of any human stock, or by the fleshly desire of a human father, but the offspring of God himself. | οἳ οὐκ ἐξ αἱμάτων οὐδὲ ἐκ θελήματος σαρκὸς οὐδὲ ἐκ θελήματος ἀνδρὸς ἀλλ' ἐκ θεοῦ ἐγεννήθησαν. | |
| 14 | So the Word became flesh; he came to dwell among us, and we saw his glory, such glory as befits the Father's only Son, full of grace and truth. | Καὶ ὁ λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο καὶ ἐσκήνωσεν ἐν ἡμῖν, καὶ ἐθεασάμεθα τὴν δόξαν αὐτοῦ, δόξαν ὡς μονογενοῦς παρὰ πατρός, πλήρης χάριτος καὶ ἀληθείας. | |

| 16 | Out of his full store we have all received grace upon grace; | ὁτι ἐκ τοῦ πληρώματος αὐτοῦ ἡμεῖς πάντες ἐλάβομεν, καὶ χάριν ἀντὶ χάριτος· | |
| 17 | for while the Law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. | ὁτι ὁ νόμος διὰ Μωϋσέως ἐδόθη, ἡ χάρις καὶ ἡ ἀλήθεια διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐγένετο. | |
| 18 | No one has ever seen God; but God's only Son, he who is nearest to the Father's heart, he has made him known. Some witnesses read: but the only one, the one nearest to the Father's heart, has made him known; others read: but the only one, himself God, the nearest to the Father's heart, has made him known. | θεὸν οὐδεὶς ἑώρακεν πώποτε· μονογενὴς θεὸς ὁ ὢν εἰς τὸν κόλπον τοῦ πατρὸς ἐκεῖνος ἐξηγήσατο. | |
