New Testament in Greek (UBS.Ed.26) |
Once when great crowds were accompanying him, he turned to them and said: | The Cost of Discipleship Lk.14.25-33 (Peraea) | Mt.10.37-38 | Συνεπορεύοντο δὲ αὐτῷ ὀχλοι πολλοί, καὶ στραφεὶς εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς,
'If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, even his own life, he cannot be a disciple of mine. | Not Peace, but a Sword Lk.14.26-27 (Peraea) | Mt.10.34-39 | Lk.12.51-53 | Εἴ τις ἐρχεται πρός με καὶ οὐ μισεῖ τὸν πατέρα ἑαυτοῦ καὶ τὴν μητέρα καὶ τὴν γυναῖκα καὶ τὰ τέκνα καὶ τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς καὶ τὰς ἀδελφάς, ἐτι τε καὶ τὴν ψυχὴν ἑαυτοῦ, οὐ δύναται εἶναί μου μαθητής.
No one who does not carry his cross and come with me can be a disciple of mine.
Would any of you think of building a tower without first sitting down and calculating the cost, to see whether he could afford to finish it? | | τίς γὰρ ἐξ ὑμῶν θέλων πύργον οἰκοδομῆσαι οὐχὶ πρῶτον καθίσας ψηφίζει τὴν δαπάνην, εἰ ἐχει εἰς ἀπαρτισμόν;
Otherwise, if he has laid its foundation and then is not able to complete it, all the onlookers will laugh at him.
"There is the man", they will say, "who started to build and could not finish."
Or what king will march to battle against another king, without first sitting down to consider whether with ten thousand men he can face an enemy coming to meet him with twenty thousand? | | ἢ τίς βασιλεὺς πορευόμενος ἑτέρῳ βασιλεῖ συμβαλεῖν εἰς πόλεμον οὐχὶ καθίσας πρῶτον βουλεύσεται εἰ δυνατός ἐστιν ἐν δέκα χιλιάσιν ὑπαντῆσαι τῷ μετὰ εἰκοσι χιλιάδων ἐρχομέν ῳ ἐπ' αὐτόν;
If he cannot, then, long before the enemy approaches, he sends envoys, and asks for terms.
| 33 | So also none of you can be a disciple of mine without parting with all his possessions.
