11 New English Bible (New Testament) Passage New Testament in Greek (UBS.Ed.26)

11 1Once, in a certain place, Jesus was at prayer. When he ceased, one of his disciples said, 'Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.'Teaching about Prayer Lk.11.1-13 (Judaea) | Mt.6.9-15 | Mt.7.7-11Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ εἶναι αὐτὸν ἐν τόπῳ τινὶ προσευχόμενον, ὡς ἐπαύσατο, εἶπέν τις τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ πρὸς αὐτόν, Κύριε, δίδαξον ἡμᾶς προσεύχεσθαι, καθὼς καὶ Ἰωάννης ἐδ ίδαξεν τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ.
2He answered,
'When you pray, say,
    "Father, Some witness read: Our Father in heaven. thy name be hallowed;
    Thy kingdom come. One witness reads: thy kingdom come upon us; some others have: thy Holy Spirit come upon us and cleanse us; some insert: thy will be done, on earth as in heaven.

3Give us each day our daily bread. Or: our bread for the morrow.
4And forgive us our sins,
For we too forgive all who have done us wrong.
And do not bring us to the test." ' Some witnesses add: but save us from the evil one (or: from evil).
5He added, 'Suppose one of you has a friend who comes to him in the middle of the night and says, "My friend, lend me three loaves, Καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς, Τίς ἐξ ὑμῶν ἑξει φίλον καὶ πορεύσεται πρὸς αὐτὸν μεσονυκτίου καὶ εἰπῃ αὐτῷ, Φίλε, χρῆσόν μοι τρεῖς ἀρτους,
6for a friend of mine on a journey has turned up at my house, and I have nothing to offer him"; ἐπειδὴ φίλος μου παρεγένετο ἐξ ὁδοῦ πρός με καὶ οὐκ ἐχω ὃ παραθήσω αὐτῷ·
7and he replies from inside, "Do not bother me. The door is shut for the night; my children and I have gone to bed; and I cannot get up and give you what you want."
8I tell you that even if he will not provide for him out of friendship, the very shamelessness of the request will make him get up and give him all he needs.
9And so I say to you, ask, and you will receive; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened.
10For everyone who asks receives, he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.
11'Is there a father among you who will offer his son Some witness insert: a stone when he asks for bread, or ... a snake when he asks for fish, τίνα δὲ ἐξ ὑμῶν τὸν πατέρα αἰτήσει ὁ υἱὸς ἰχθύν, καὶ ἀντὶ ἰχθύος ὀφιν αὐτῷ ἐπιδώσε;
12or a scorpion when he asks for an egg? ἢ καὶ αἰτήσει ᾠόν, ἐπιδώσει αὐτῷ σκορπίον;
13If you, then, bad as you are, know how to give your children what is good for them, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit Some witnesses read: a good gift; some others read: good things. to those who ask him!'
