| 7 | Crowds of people came out to be baptized by him, and he said to them: 'You vipers' brood! Who warned you to escape from the coming retribution? | Ἔλεγεν οὖν τοῖς ἐκπορευομένοις ὀχλοις βαπτισθῆναι ὑπ' αὐτοῦ, Γεννήματα ἐχιδνῶν, τίς ὑπέδειξεν ὑμῖν φυγεῖν ἀπὸ τῆς μελλούσης ὀργῆς; | |
| 8 | Then prove your repentance by the fruit it bears; and do not begin saying to yourselves, "We have Abraham for our father." I tell you that God can make children for Abraham out of these stones here. | ποιήσατε οὖν καρποὺς ἀξίους τῆς μετανοίας· καὶ μὴ ἀρξησθε λέγειν ἐν ἑαυτοῖς, Πατέρα ἐχομεν τὸν Ἀβραάμ, λέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν ὅτι δύναται ὁ θεὸς ἐκ τῶν λίθων τούτων ἐγεῖραι τε κνα τῷ Ἀβραάμ. | |
| 9 | Already the axe is laid to the roots of the trees; and every tree that fails to produce good fruit is cut down and thrown on the fire.' | ἠδη δὲ καὶ ἡ ἀξίνη πρὸς τὴν ῥίζαν τῶν δένδρων κεῖται· πᾶν οὖν δένδρον μὴ ποιοῦν καρπὸν καλὸν ἐκκόπτεται καὶ εἰς πῦρ βάλλεται. | |
