| "Lord, now let your servant depart in peace, according to your word; | Song of Simeon Odes.12.29-32 | | Νῦν ἀπολύεις τὸν δοῦλόν σου, δέσποτα, κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμά σου ἐν εἰρήνῃ· |
| for my eyes have seen your salvation | ὁτι εἶδον οἱ ὀφθαλμοί μου τὸ σωτήριόν σου
| which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, | ὃ ἡτοίμασας κατὰ πρόσωπον πάντων τῶν λαῶν,
| a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel."
| And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him; | καὶ ἦν ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἡ μήτηρ θαυμάζοντες ἐπὶ τοῖς λαλουμένοις περὶ αὐτοῦ.
| and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, "Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is spoken against | καὶ εὐλόγησεν αὐτοὺς Συμεὼν καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς Μαριὰμ τὴν μητέρα αὐτοῦ, Ἰδοὺ οὗτος κεῖται εἰς πτῶσιν καὶ ἀνάστασιν πολλῶν ἐν τῷ Ἰσραὴλ καὶ εἰς σημεῖον ἀντιλεγόμενον
| (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed."
| And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher; she was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years from her virginity, | Καὶ ἦν Ἅννα προφῆτις, θυγάτηρ φανουήλ, ἐκ φυλῆς Ἀσήρ· αὑτη προβεβηκυῖα ἐν ἡμέραις πολλαῖς, ζήσασα μετὰ ἀνδρὸς ἐτη ἑπτὰ ἀπὸ τῆς παρθενίας αὐτῆς,
| and as a widow till she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple, worshipping with fasting and prayer night and day.
| And coming up at that very hour she gave thanks to God, and spoke of him to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.
| And when they had performed everything according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city, Nazareth. | The Return to Nazareth Lk.2.39-40 (Nazareth) | Καὶ ὡς ἐτέλεσαν πάντα τὰ κατὰ τὸν νόμον κυρίου, ἐπέστρεψαν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν εἰς πόλιν ἑαυτῶν Nαζαρέθ. |
| And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favour of God was upon him.
| Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover. | The Boy Jesus in the Temple Lk.2.41-52 (Jerusalem) | Καὶ ἐπορεύοντο οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ κατ' ἐτος εἰς Ἰερουσαλὴμ τῇ ἑορτῇ τοῦ πάσχα. |
| And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to custom; | καὶ ὅτε ἐγένετο ἐτῶν δώδεκα, ἀναβαινόντων αὐτῶν κατὰ τὸ ἐθος τῆς ἑορτῆς
| and when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, | καὶ τελειωσάντων τὰς ἡμέρας, ἐν τῷ ὑποστρέφειν αὐτοὺς ὑπέμεινεν Ἰησοῦς ὁ παῖς ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ, καὶ οὐκ ἐγνωσαν οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ.
| but supposing him to be in the company they went a day's journey, and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintances; | νομίσαντες δὲ αὐτὸν εἶναι ἐν τῇ συνοδίᾳ ἦλθον ἡμέρας ὁδὸν καὶ ἀνεζήτουν αὐτὸν ἐν τοῖς συγγενεῦσιν καὶ τοῖς γνωστοῖς,
| and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking him.
| After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions; | καὶ ἐγένετο μετὰ ἡμέρας τρεῖς εὗρον αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ καθεζόμενον ἐν μέσῳ τῶν διδασκάλων καὶ ἀκούοντα αὐτῶν καὶ ἐπερωτῶντα αὐτούς·
| and all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.
| And when they saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him, "Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been looking for you anxiously."
| And he said to them, "How is it that you sought me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?"
