New Testament in Greek (UBS.Ed.26) |
| 35 | James and John, the sons of Zebedee, approached him and said, 'Master, we should like you to do us a favour.' | The Request of James and John Mk.10.35-45 (Borders of Samaria) | Mt.20.20-28 | Καὶ προσπορεύονται αὐτῷ Ἰάκωβος καὶ Ἰωάννης οἱ υἱοὶ Ζεβεδαίου λέγοντες αὐτῷ, Διδάσκαλε, θέλομεν ἵνα ὃ ἐὰν αἰτήσωμέν σε ποιήσῃς ἡμῖν. |
| 36 | 'What is it you want me to do?' he asked.
| 37 | They answered, 'Grant us the right to sit in state with you, one at your right and the other at your left.' |
| 38 | Jesus said to them, 'You do not understand what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?'
| 39 | 'We can', they answered. Jesus said, 'The cup that I drink you shall drink, and the baptism I am baptized with shall be your baptism; | | οἱ δὲ εἶπαν αὐτῷ, Δυνάμεθα.
| 40 | but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant; it is for those to whom it has already been assigned.' Some witnesses add: by my Father.
| 41 | When the other ten heard this, they were indignant with James and John. |
| 42 | Jesus called them to him and said, 'You know that in the world the recognized rulers lord it over their subjects, and their great men make them feel the weight of authority. |
| 43 | That is not the way with you; among you, whoever wants to be great must be your servant, | | οὐχ οὑτως δέ ἐστιν ἐν ὑμῖν· ἀλλ' ὃς ἂν θέλῃ μέγας γενέσθαι ἐν ὑμῖν, ἐσται ὑμῶν διάκονος, |
| 44 | and whoever wants to be first must be the willing slave of all.
| 45 | For even the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to surrender his life as a ransom for many.'
