A Psalm of David, for the memorial offering.Prayer in Distress. Psalm 38(v37)
38 1 O Yahweh, rebuke me not in your anger,
nor chasten me in your wrath!
2For your arrows have sunk into me,
and your hand has come down on me.
3There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation;
there is no health in my bones because of my sin.
4For my iniquities have gone over my head;
they weigh like a burden too heavy for me.
5My wounds grow foul and fester
because of my foolishness,
6I am utterly bowed down and prostrate;
all the day I go about mourning.
7For my loins are filled with burning,
and there is no soundness in my flesh.
8I am utterly spent and crushed;
I groan because of the tumult of my heart.
9Yahweh, all my longing is known to you,
my sighing is not hidden from you.
10My heart throbs, my strength fails me;
and the light of my eyes - it also has gone from me.
11My friends and companions stand aloof from my plague,
and my kinsmen stand afar off.
12Those who seek my life lay their snares,
those who seek my hurt speak of ruin,
and meditate treachery all the day long.
13But I am like a deaf man, I do not hear,
like a dumb man who does not open his mouth.
14Yea, I am like a man who does not hear,
and in whose mouth are no rebukes.
15But for you, O Yahweh, do I wait;
it is you, O Yahweh my God, who will answer.
16For I pray, "Only let them not rejoice over me,
who boast against me when my foot slips!"
17For I am ready to fall,
and my pain is ever with me.
18I confess my iniquity,
I am sorry for my sin.
19Those who are my foes without cause are mighty,
and many are those who hate me wrongfully.
20Those who render me evil for good are my adversaries
because I follow after good.
21Do not forsake me, O Yahweh!
O my God, be not far from me!
22Make haste to help me,
O Yahweh, my salvation!

Notes: This page displays passages from the katapi NEW STUDY BIBLE.
The katapi NEW STUDY BIBLE is a very light revision of the RSV. The changes are: (1) In places where 'the LORD', 'O LORD' occurs in the RSV, (it represents the tetragrammaton - YHWH - which is in the hebrew text), I have used the name 'Yahweh'.
(2) I have removed the quotation marks and hyphens that were used in so many names in the RSV as an aid to correct pronunciation. This now brings it in line with all other English versions, and makes any word-search more accurate.
(3) I have changed all (I hope!) of the RSV archaic language sections to modern.

The katapi New Study Bible reference section displays links to parallel passages, and to direct quotations by New Testament authors to Old Testament passages. Quotations of OT passages by NT authors can in most cases be viewed within their context of the OT passage as a whole, with the quoted text displayed, against a subdued background.
