| 8 1 | (7:73b) WHEN THE SEVENTH MONTH CAME, and the Israelites were now settled in their towns, (8:1) the people assembled as one man in the square in front of the Water Gate, and Ezra the scribe Or doctor of the law was asked to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the LORD had enjoined upon Israel. | Ezra reads the Law to the people. Ne.8.1-12 | וַיֵּאָסְפוּ כָל־הָעָם כְּאִישׁ אֶחָד אֶל־הָרְחֹוב אֲשֶׁר לִפְנֵי שַׁעַר־הַמָּיִם וַיֹּאמְרוּ לְעֶזְרָא הַסֹּפֵר לְהָבִיא אֶת־סֵפֶר תֹּורַת מֹשֶׁה אֲשֶׁר־צִוָּה יְהוָה אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵל׃ |

| 2 | On the first day of the seventh month, Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly, every man and woman, and all who were capable of understanding what they heard were capable
heard: or would teach them to understand. | | וַיָּבִיא עֶזְרָא הַכֹּהֵן אֶת־הַתֹּורָה לִפְנֵי הַקָּהָל מֵאִישׁ וְעַד־אִשָּׁה וְכֹל מֵבִין לִשְׁמֹעַ בְּיֹום אֶחָד לַחֹדֶשׁ הַשְּׁבִיעִי׃ |

| 3 | He read from it, facing the square in front of the Water Gate, from early morning till noon, in the presence of the men and the women, and those who could understand could understand: or were to instruct, all the people listened attentively to the book of the law. | | וַיִּקְרָא־בֹו לִפְנֵי הָרְחֹוב אֲשֶׁר לִפְנֵי שַׁעַר־הַמַּיִם מִן־הָאֹור עַד־מַחֲצִית הַיֹּום נֶגֶד הָאֲנָשִׁים וְהַנָּשִׁים וְהַמְּבִינִים וְאָזְנֵי כָל־הָעָם אֶל־סֵפֶר הַתֹּורָה׃ |

| 4 | Ezra the scribe stood on a wooden platform made for the purpose Or for the address, and beside him stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah on his right hand, and on his left Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchiah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah and Meshullam. | | וַיַּעֲמֹד עֶזְרָא הַסֹּפֵר עַל־מִגְדַּל־עֵץ אֲשֶׁר עָשׂוּ לַדָּבָר וַיַּעֲמֹד אֶצְלֹו מַתִּתְיָה וְשֶׁמַע וַעֲנָיָה וְאוּרִיָּה וְחִלְקִיָּה וּמַעֲשֵׂיָה עַל־יְמִינֹו וּמִשְּׂמֹאלֹו פְּדָיָה וּמִישָׁאֵל וּמַלְכִּיָּה וְחָשֻׁם וְחַשְׁבַּדָּנָה זְכַרְיָה מְשֻׁלָּם׃ ף |

| 5 | Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was standing above them; and when he opened it, they all stood. | | וַיִּפְתַּח עֶזְרָא הַסֵּפֶר לְעֵינֵי כָל־הָעָם כִּי־מֵעַל כָּל־הָעָם הָיָה וּכְפִתְחֹו עָמְדוּ כָל־הָעָם׃ |

| 6 | Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God, and all the people raised their hands and answered, 'Amen, Amen'; and they bowed their heads and prostrated themselves humbly before the LORD. | | וַיְבָרֶךְ עֶזְרָא אֶת־יְהוָה הָאֱלֹהִים הַגָּדֹול וַיַּעֲנוּ כָל־הָעָם אָמֵן אָמֵן בְּמֹעַל יְדֵיהֶם וַיִּקְּדוּ וַיִּשְׁתַּחֲוֻּ לַיהוָה אַפַּיִם אָרְצָה׃ |

| 7 | Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, the Levites prob. rdg, Heb and the Levites, expounded the law to the people while they remained in their places. | | וְיֵשׁוּעַ וּבָנִי וְשֵׁרֵבְיָה יָמִין עַקּוּב שַׁבְּתַי הֹודִיָּה מַעֲשֵׂיָה קְלִיטָא עֲזַרְיָה יֹוזָבָד חָןָן פְּלָאיָה וְהַלְוִיִּם מְבִינִים אֶת־הָעָם לַתֹּורָה וְהָעָם עַל־עָמְדָם׃ |

| 8 | They read from the book of the law of God clearly, made its sense plain and gave instruction in what was read.
| | וַיִּקְרְאוּ בַסֵּפֶר בְּתֹורַת הָאֱלֹהִים מְפֹרָשׁ וְשֹׂום שֶׂכֶל וַיָּבִינוּ בַּמִּקְרָא׃ ס |

| 9 | Then Nehemiah the governor and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who instructed the people, said to them all, 'This day is holy to the LORD your God; do not mourn or weep.' For all the people had been weeping while they listened to the words of the law. | | וַיֹּאמֶר נְחֶמְיָה הוּא הַתִּרְשָׁתָא וְעֶזְרָא הַכֹּהֵן הַסֹּפֵר וְהַלְוִיִּם הַמְּבִינִים אֶת־הָעָם לְכָל־הָעָם הַיֹּום קָדֹשׁ־הוּא לַיהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם אַל־תִּתְאַבְּלוּ וְאַל־תִּבְכּוּ כִּי בֹוכִים כָּל־הָעָם כְּשָׁמְעָם אֶת־דִּבְרֵי הַתֹּורָה׃ |

| 10 | Then he said to them, 'You may go now; refresh yourselves with rich food and sweet drinks, and send a share to all who cannot provide for themselves; for this day is holy to our Lord. Let there be no sadness, for joy in the LORD is your strength.' | | וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם לְכוּ אִכְלוּ מַשְׁמַנִּים וּשְׁתוּ מַמְתַקִּים וְשִׁלְחוּ מָנֹות לְאֵין נָכֹון לֹו כִּי־קָדֹושׁ הַיֹּום לַאֲדֹנֵינוּ וְאַל־תֵּעָצֵבוּ כִּי־חֶדְוַת יְהוָה הִיא מָעֻזְּכֶם׃ |

| 11 | The Levites silenced the people, saying, 'Be quiet, for this day is holy; let there be no sadness.' | | וְהַלְוִיִּם מַחְשִׁים לְכָל־הָעָם לֵאמֹר הַסּוּ כִּי הַיֹּום קָדֹשׁ וְאַל־תֵּעָצֵבוּ׃ |

| 12 | So all the people went away to eat and to drink, to send shares to others and to celebrate the day with great rejoicing, because they had understood what had been explained to them.
| | וַיֵּלְכוּ כָל־הָעָם לֶאֱכֹל וְלִשְׁתֹּות וּלְשַׁלַּח מָנֹות וְלַעֲשֹׂות שִׂמְחָה גְדֹולָה כִּי הֵבִינוּ בַּדְּבָרִים אֲשֶׁר הֹודִיעוּ לָהֶם׃ ס |
