11Whoever keeps the law controls his thoughts,
and wisdom is the fulfilment of the fear of the Lord.
Wisdom & foolishness. Sir.21.11-28ὁδὸς ἁμαρτωλῶν ὡμαλισμένη ἐκ λίθων,
καὶ ἐπ' ἐσχάτων αὐτῆς βόθρος ᾅδου.
12He who is not clever cannot be taught,
but there is a cleverness which increases bitterness.
 Ὁ φυλάσσων νόμον κατακρατεῖ τοῦ ἐννοήματος αὐτοῦ,
καὶ συντέλεια τοῦ φόβου κυρίου σοφία.
13The knowledge of a wise man will increase like a flood,
and his counsel like a flowing spring.
 
14The mind of a fool is like a broken jar;
it will hold no knowledge.
 μετὰ ἄφρονος μὴ πληθύνῃς λόγον,
καὶ πρὸς ἀσύνετον μὴ πορεύου·
φύλαξαι ἀπ' αὐτοῦ, ἵνα μὴ κόπον ἔχῃς
καὶ οὐ μὴ μολυνθῇς ἐν τῷ ἐντιναγμῷ αὐτοῦ· ἔκκλινον ἀπ' αὐτοῦ καὶ εὑρήσεις ἀνάπαυσιν καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀκηδιάσῃς ἐν τῇ ἀπονοίᾳ αὐτοῦ.
14The mind of a fool is like a broken jar;
it will hold no knowledge.
 οὐ παιδευθήσεται ὃς οὐκ ἔστιν πανοῦργος,
ἔστιν δὲ πανουργία πληθύνουσα πικρίαν.
15When a man of understanding hears a wise saying,
he will praise it and add to it;
when a reveler hears it, he dislikes it
and casts it behind his back.
 
16A fool's narration is like a burden on a journey,
but delight will be found in the speech of the intelligent.
 γνῶσις σοφοῦ ὡς κατακλυσμὸς πληθυνθήσεται,
καὶ ἡ βουλὴ αὐτοῦ ὡς πηγὴ ζωῆς.
17The utterance of a sensible man will be sought in the assembly,
and they will ponder his words in their minds.
 ὑπὲρ μόλιβον τί βαρυνθήσεται;
καὶ τί αὐτῷ ὄνομα ἀλλ' ἢ μωρός;

 Ἱμάντωσις ξυλίνη ἐνδεδεμένη εἰς οἰκοδομὴν
ἐν συσσεισμῷ οὐ διαλυθήσεται·
οὕτως καρδία ἐστηριγμένη ἐπὶ διανοήματος βουλῆς
ἐν καιρῷ οὐ δειλιάσει.

 χάρακες ἐπὶ μετεώρου κείμενοι
κατέναντι ἀνέμου οὐ μὴ ὑπομείνωσιν·
οὕτως καρδία δειλὴ ἐπὶ διανοήματος μωροῦ
κατέναντι παντὸς φόβου οὐ μὴ ὑπομείνῃ.

24It is ill-mannered for a man to listen at a door,
and a discreet man is grieved by the disgrace.
 Ὁ νύσσων ὀφθαλμὸν κατάξει δάκρυα,
καὶ νύσσων καρδίαν ἐκφαίνει αἴσθησιν.

μὴ εὐλαβηθῇς, ἔστιν γὰρ διαλλαγή·
πλὴν ὀνειδισμοῦ καὶ ὑπερηφανίας καὶ μυστηρίου ἀποκαλύ ψεως καὶ πληγῆς δολίας,
ἐν τούτοις ἀποφεύξεται πᾶς φίλος.

 πίστιν κτῆσαι ἐν πτωχείᾳ μετὰ τοῦ πλησίον,
ἵνα ἐν τοῖς ἀγαθοῖς αὐτοῦ ὁμοῦ πλησθῇς·
ἐν καιρῷ θλίψεως διάμενε αὐτῷ,
ἵνα ἐν τῇ κληρονομίᾳ αὐτοῦ συγκληρονομήσῃς.

Notes: This page displays passages from the katapi NEW STUDY BIBLE.
The katapi NEW STUDY BIBLE is a very light revision of the RSV. The changes are: (1) In places where 'the LORD', 'O LORD' occurs in the RSV, (it represents the tetragrammaton - YHWH - which is in the hebrew text), I have used the name 'Yahweh'.
(2) I have removed the quotation marks and hyphens that were used in so many names in the RSV as an aid to correct pronunciation. This now brings it in line with all other English versions, and makes any word-search more accurate.
(3) I have changed all (I hope!) of the RSV archaic language sections to modern.

Quotations of OT passages by NT authors can in most cases be viewed within their context of the OT passage as a whole, with the quoted text displayed, against a subdued background.
